While Joe and I were talking to my pastry chef friend who is making our wedding cake, Joe said that he'd like to have chocolate cake instead of white. I'd rather have chocolate as well, but are we going to get odd looks when we serve a chocolate wedding cake?

Just an extra tidbit - she said that she has a to die for scratch chocolate cake recipe - I can't wait to test it :)

I don't think you would get strange looks on the cake, but I know that it is more difficult to decorate a choc cake than white or yellow. We are doing a yellow cake, but J is insisting on choc., so we are doing an armadillo cake (Steel Magnolia's style-he doesn't know) that is choc, but red in color.

Neither can I. The lady that is making my cakes is so excited about making it. She has never done it and is planning on experimenting w it. I think all of the middle aged ladies at the reception will get a kick out of it, if they have ever seen Steel Magnolias.

Go with chocolate. It is your wedding. If people don't like it they can just drop off their gift and leave.

Hi Stacey,
I AGREE with Lacey! It is your wedding. If you preferr chocolate, go with it. If people don't like chocolate, they don't have to eat it. You are not force feeding it to them! If you are concerned with getting odd looks, you could always do half and half.

As for difficulty decorating chocolate cake, I think it depends on what exactly you are using on the cake! My best firend had a chocolate raspberry cake and with white icing, and it turned out beautifully!

Good Luck!

Yep I would say go with whatever you want.

We were going with chocolate anyways - I just wondered about "looks", not that I care - we're paying for it anyways. Besides, that is the one thing that Joe has requested, I certainly can't tell him no. He's had an opinion on the cake and favors - he's not too terribly demanding.

As far as decorating, she's a pro - I'm sure it won't be a problem. If I was doing it? Haha - I wouldn't even try. She didn't raise an eyebrow at the chocolate cake. She was more concerned about what kind of icing I wanted, do we want fresh flowers, silks, gum paste flowers...something other than flowers - the only thing stopping her is our imagination.

She does absolutely beautiful cakes - like the ones you see on the wedding cake challenges on the Food Network.

Lol. I choose chocolate too! Then my granny actually b!thced at me and said what about the ones who don't like chocolate. I told her to hit the desert table then because it was my wedding and I wasn't changing anything!! lol

Go chocolate!! :)

I don't think it would be strange...but you might want to think about having a regular white cake there as well (like maybe just a slab cake or something) because I know a lot of people don't like chocolate cake....well maybe not a lot of people, but I know if my whole family came none of us would eat chocolate cake....we just don't care for it....just an idea.

I had a really unusual cake. It was yellow (I HATE white cake) filled with lemon curd and strawberries. If people didn't like it they didn't have to eat it. I wasn't running my wedding by vote and committee. I offered them a wide choice of entrees, hors d'ouevres, cookes, and an open bar. They had to settle for the cake. My one friend detests anything that has fruit in it. She complained all the time about not being able to eat my cake because she wouldn't like it. I told her not to serve that type of cake if she ever got married again. End of discussion. Serve what you want. You aren't running a diner, you are having a wedding. They ought to be happy they were invited and offered cake.

I agree, do what you want and don't worry what others will think. Personally, I like uniqueness ;)

However, if you are wanting a choc cake with white icing, it might take more or thicker icing so the baker may charge more for this.

Good luck!

Unique - that's what I'm going for, so chocolate cake it is. Who ever comes and doesn't like chocolate, Lacey's right, they should be happy that they were invited to begin with.

Joe originally wanted chocolate cake and chocolate icing, but I vetoed the brown cake, even though the one we saw at the bridal show was beautiful.

You could do a white chocolate icing with a dark chcoolate design.

I'm late chimming in, but cakes today are going away from traditional. Look at Lacey's cake, it defiantely wasn't anything you would have seen 10 years ago, but it was beautiful! I say go with whatever you like and want (or your hubby in this case). Don't worry about the looks! I think most people like chocolate better anyway. I do!
