View Full Version : Gemstone jewelry - real vs fake

I put this here because I wanted to get some feedback on more than just engagement/wedding rings.
So what kind of gemstones do you like? Do you prefer the genuine rock or maybe a cheaper copy? Would you rather have a small real stone or a larger fake?
This is just for fun, not for debate or anything now ... spammers stay away ;)

Me; I said other because I wasn't sure how to respond. On one hand I am not really that much into gemstone jewelry, but I do sort of like some things. I am loving the black and white diamond thing.
I think we all would prefer to have the real thing, but I for one am not going to spend (or want others to spend on me) the kind of money most real stones can costs.
So for me I think it sort of depends on what it is and how good the fake stone is; and of course how well the piece itself is made too. I probably wouldn't mind a CZ or moissanite ring or whatever as long as it was made well and the stone wouldn't fall out or something. I prefer small stones anyway, so the size would not be an issue for me.
I appreciate the authenticity of real genstones. If I was to receive a piece of jewelry as a present, it should be of good quality regardless of size. Basically, I would rather a small stone that is of high quality than a large stone of much lower quality.
However, I also love good fashion jewelry that I can wear without worrying about the possibility of losing - in which case, the stone could be fake as long as it is huge and looks good!
So, to sum it up - if it's gonna be real, it better be top quality regardless of size, but if it's gonna be fake, it better be **** big and pretty. :)

The only other gemstone I have is my emerald. It's my birthstone and although it has some flaws I wouldn't trade it for a created stone. The chinese considered the threads and bubbles a garden captured in the stone. I also have a strand of cultured pearls that mom and dad gave me when I turned 25. So what if they aren't real the thought behind them was.
All my other jewelry is just metal. I have a pair of white gold hoops I wear all the time and my Hawaiian name bracelet.

I love gemstone jewelry. That's part of the reason my e-ring is an emerald.
While I realize it's probably better for the environment to get a simulated stone... I like the real stuff. You don't get the inclusions of emeralds in the created stone. I have expensive taste in other stuff - I prefer real, heavy, careful jewelry.
Besides, my favorite stones (aquamarines, amethysts, opals, emeralds) are not always the most expensive. At least for the sizes I'd be wearing, LOL.

I am more interested in quality over quantity; and I would never wear a fake stone. It's just a personal preference. I don't have a ton of jewelry, but the few pieces I do have are very nice, and that's fine with me. :)
I feel that fake jewelry would incur a feeling of a fake marriage. I feel that the stone's gotta be real, even if it's small. Just my $0.02 though.

I prefer real. Even if it's a smaller ct weight since over time no matter how tiny, the price will appreciate if it is of good quality.
And... I'm a bit of a gem geek, so I can spot a fake a mile away.
One day I purchased a little $10 silver & cz ring because it was cute. I figured, ok it's only $10. No. I hated it. It's just so obviously a fake! I'd just rather not have it at all.

We are not talking about wedding jewelry here ;)

Guess that teaches me not to skim through posts *doh*
I like real for wedding jewelry (obviously hehe)
For fun... it really doesn't matter to me as long as it doesn't leave green marks on my skin :) I LOVE real stones because there's just nothing like them, but as far as wearing them - I can be happy with either :) :innocent:

I voted that it depends on how good the fake is. I have seen some beautiful lab created stones that I wouldn't think twice about wearing.
Funny story - before DH and I were even thinking of getting married, we went shopping in the "Mercado" in San Antonio. There is a cute little jewelry stand there called Julia's Jewelry. I picked up a cut glass ring that had marquise & round shaped stones set in a floral pattern on Sterling Silver. The ring is quite large and has 3 layers of glass "petals". DH bought it for me ($20) and I wore it on my ring finger for years before he gave me my e-ring. That ring sparkled like no other I have seen. Most people thought it was real and would make comments about DH being rich. Believe it or not, I got more compliments on that $20 piece of glass & sterling than I get on my almost 2 carat wedding set!
Oh, this thread totally just reminded me of an episode of Sex & the City, where Carrie finds a yellow gold engagement ring in Aiden's pocket that he purchased to propose with and she flips out to Miranda saying she only wears yellow gold for fun and would never want to be proposed to with it. Granted we're not talking about yellow gold vs. white gold or platinum, but the idea of differentiating the good stuff from the fun stuff just kind of reminded me of that episode. :)

I guess I don't really care when it comes to gemstones. For my engagement ring it had to be real diamonds. My first preference is always going to be for real stones, but I also have nothing against wearing gemstones that aren't real as long as they look nice and don't look totally fake or cheap.
I have my eyes on a blue topaz necklace that I'd like have to wear on my wedding day (its my birthstone & also matches the blue in my bridesmaid dresses) but not sure if I'll get it. I'd rather it be a gift but I don't think FH is getting the hints either. LOL Anyway, it's a lab created stone. Compared to a real topaz necklace of comparable price, the stone is bigger and the color is more vibrant, which is what I want.

I have a Jewellery Box full of Garnets (My Birthstone) Bursting to the point of Insanity. :bbeek:
I ended up with a load of Mums Jewellery when She passed away in January. Some of which goes back over 60 Years.
Real or Fake Stones don't bother Me as long as they stand the test of time. But the Metal has to be Real Gold and not Plated.

For real!
I bought a gold plated sterling silver ring to wear as a fake wedding band while I was in Russia. It looked convincing.
I say looked because now (and after about three months of wear) only the inside is still gold, the outside's gold had completely worn off. I still like the ring and wear it biking instead of my real e-ring but you know, I don't think I am that hard on jewelry!
