Here is our "sold sign!" We are finally home! I can't believe everything that happened between house #2 and the closing on this house. It feels good to be able to settle down finally and start our projects!

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/FutureMrsDM/RecentPIcs076.jpg?t=1238637948

After being in the house for almost a week, I was bound and determined to dig through the boxes and find my cord for my camera to start uploading our pictures to show the progress. Found it!!

We plan on painting this weekend. This past weekend, we took down the wood paneling, the railings, or baby gates as we refer to them as and just started patching the walls up to paint!

Here's where we are so far!

Dan and Dad ripping down paneling:

Thanks ladies! The funny thing about the fireplace, they didn't get all the morter off of it when it was put in. I bought some acid from HD to get it off. I hope it brings out the color of the stone more!!! And actually, its not even a natural fireplace, its gas. At first I was disappointed, but I kinda like it because its easier to use and less to worry about it. Like, if we just want it for ambience, we don't have to worry about getting it started or worry about it dwindling down at night.

Tadswife - Its a 46" Sony LCD. But it has a smal butt, as I refer to it as! I bought it at Sears - in Brookfield Sqaure! Gosh, I love that you are a local, you know the stores I talk about!! LOL Oh, and speaking of the t.v., Dan wants to get a flat panel to put above the fire place. He wants a 50", but I think 46" is my max. I still think 46" is too big! Ugh - men!

Don't you just love having a sold sign in the front yard. so have you met any of your neighbors yet?

I met one the other day. I was going down to the mailbox and a couple was walking their dog and they said, "Welcome to the neighborhood! Are you from around here?" I told him yes, we both grew up here and went to school here. The guy asked, "Oh, well, I wonder if you know my kids. They graduated high school in like 98." I said, "No, probably not, I graduated in 2006 and my fiance in 2005." The guy is like, "Oh...." Kind shocked.

Its going to be weird, I'm sure we are going to see kids that we know from school there or their parents, or people older.

Oh and the sold sign! We were able to drop things off in the garage before closing throughout the week and when we pulled in the first night, I was sooo excited!

Ah you do have my tv...except I have a 42" from American in Oak Creek. My DH wanted bigger, like you I wasn't going any bigger. But I am considering getting a 50" now. I just love our TV.... I think bigger would be neater. Plus I have a TV in our rec room that just needs to go. So I figure we can put the 42" down there and put the 50" in our living room. And I must add that your fireplace deffinalty looks real and not gas. I have to agree it's much easier to use!

MEN:bbeek: you got that right. I told my DH since we bought our home that I would take care of putting together the whole house, he was incharge of the rec room. He could do whatever he wanted with my final inspection of course. 3 years later, it still looks like it did the day we moved in only with more clutter! Hmm.. that sounds a wee bit too familiar! My FH turned our basement into a "man cave" for him and his buds to watch Nascar, play video games and for room to use the huge slot car track. But that ended when winter came and it was "too cold". Men are such babies! Now he'll go to his dad's for the "mens Nascar game playing" night. LOL Sounds like your FH and mine are almost two peas in a pod!

I told Dan he could have the basement, providing he left my laundry room alone. He gets his half of the garage and I get mine. He had the nerve to tell me I need to park outside when his boat needed to spend a few nights in the garage!!! :irked: Ugh!

How we managed in an 1000 sq. ft condo, is beyond me. He we are calling dibs on rooms in over a 1600 sq. ft house, plus the basement, plus the garage, the extra concrete parking slab out front AND the 1 acre lot! Yup..feels like we are married already!!!

D'OH!

Yeah...:icon_barbar:

The area in Wisconsin that I live, like the southern part of the state, is really expensive. For instance. There is a mobile home looking house for sale near us (in a different, more expensive town) on a 1/4 acre lot for $80,000. There are starter homes inbetween $150,000-$200,000, but obviously, we aren't looking for a starter home at this point. In fact, our budget was originall around $200,000. Oh how quickly that changed.

It did help when we moved to a different area where taxes were lower and interest rates dropped to be in the monthly payment price range we wanted to be in.

We looked into other houses.. and a decent house in our area we would even consider looking at is over 250,000! Your lucky to be where you are. So lucky! I know Racine area the houses are cheap. My sister got a 5 bedroom house 2 1/5 bath one includes a jacuzi tub for 119,000 in Racine! Here house is huge! But not much of a yard at all! Oh yeah tell Dan.. there is no way your parking outside so the boat can get time in the garage.. He is going to have to forfit his spot...lol

Errr still a lot cheaper than a One bedroom Apartment in My Home Town.

And You don't even get a Garden. Nor a Garage. And come to think of it, anywhere remotely near the place to park a Bike let along a Car. :bbeek:

Whoa! The condo price I can believe, but the association fees! OMG!

We hope to finish the walls this weekend. As part of the updating, I know that we can't get new cabinets anytime soon. They aren't in horrible condition, just older. So, as a solution, I want to put some new handles on them ...what do you think? Can you tell which ones were original with the house?! :cloppy:

I was hoping to get some pictures up today, but I couldn't find my camera cord to get them uploaded on my computer. Oh well, I can try for it tonight!

This weekend, I re-textured/primed the whole kitchen, twice! Started texturing/priming the hallway and main bathroom. They just need an extra coat and those will be done. I hope to get the rest of the house done this week.

We also took the cabinets out over the breakfast bar area. It made the kitchen so much more open! During the process of taking them down, one of our bar stools fell on my foot (I only had slippers on) and now my foot is soo bruised and swollen. Dan calls them my battle wounds! :)

While I was painting, Dan was running electric in the half walls and getting those mounted. He has been having some trouble with them, so they are taking a lot longer than expected. He also had to work all day Saturday, so he lost a day.

Kinda stinks that Easter is the weekend. Won't really have much time to work on things, although - our firm is closing at noon on Friday, so I have the whole half of day to go home and get things done.

Also, at closing, we brought too much money in because we didn't have an exact total, and the title company rolled our appraisal fee (which we already paid for) into closing. So we got a check for like $500 back this last week. We hope to go and buy some furniture. Maybe this weekend, I hope!

I'll post pictures tonight!!

The hideous green accent walls: :snide:

AFTER, just with primer!

The tile is hideous as well, but doesn't look that bad with a neutral color over it.

Well, that is what I've been up to these last two days. This is taking a lot longer than I thought!

Looks good Jeanne! I missed this post until now - I didn't realize you were already in! Congrats! :)

Thanks! Like I said, it doesn't look like much done, but the fact that the walls are starting to become white versus the ugly colors they had on the walls, feels like so much progress to us!

I do have to say though, I am getting really sick of painting with the texture/sand stuff we are doing. Its so messy and I'm just ready to get the actual colors on the walls. I want to be able to put things in their place! I don't want to have to worry about moving things to paint.

What a difference paint and taking down those cabinets make in the house! Everything looks great - especially the kitchen. It is so open and warm now. I agree 100% with you about painting. While paint is an "easy" fix, it is time consuming if you do it right. It took us forever to get my house painted and ready to sell. The best lesson I learned while doing it though was buy good paint. We bought the cheap stuff for my house ($8 a gallon) and Sherwin Williams for our current house ($40 a gallon) and what a difference it made! The cheap stuff didn't cover well and we probably put 3 coats on the walls compared to 1 coat of the SW. Can't wait to see more progress pictures!

That is just it, since the house is older, we decided instead of wasting our time by just priming, we should just texture/prime it all. We are using that sand texture stuff which is so messy. Like this: http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff176/cwpm410/perlite.jpgThe sand splatters all over! For the texture, we are using just Sheetrock's texture paint. For the actual painting, we are using Behr and maybe one room in Glidden because I found a color I really liked and never used it before.

Last night was another kinda nothing night. FH did finish up with the walls, so all that is left to do is re-run the electric and drywall! I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I will be when this project is done. It is such a freaking mess!!!

Basically last night, we cleaned up his mess (we had sawdust everywhere, and he did most of the work in the garage!:bbeek:), had a nice meal and prepared ourselves for another mess this weekend. I really hope to finish texturing the rest of the house on Saturday.

I get out of work at noon today, so I hope to get my grocery shopping and errands done so we can use all day tomorrow to work.

The county we live in has a website where you can go online by property address and view tax bills. I've been looking like everyday because I couldn't wait until they switched the names over, to our names! Well, this morning I go and look and the deed was FINALLY recorded and our names were there!!!! Its so stupid, but I'm so excited!

And, since we went through a mortgage company, they send our loan somewhere, like to a larger bank. Yesterday we got documents from Chase, and that is who we will be paying for the next 30 years!! :bbeek:

Are you sure you'll be paying Chase for the next 30 years? I think the banks sell their loans over the years and you end up going through many different banks by the time it's done. At least here they do - mom's been with a few banks already and she only had the house for almost 3 years.

I don't think you'll have to do anything on your part if they do sell the loan. It's all between them - all you'd have to do is send your mortgage payment to another location.

Anyway, the important part is you're a homeowner and like you said - you'll be paying SOMEONE for 30 years :)

Dare I say it......I think we are almost done with painting for now! FH finished edging the kithchen and living room last night. I really hope we can kinda get things in place this weekend in both of those rooms!!

Also - I got the main bathroom painted for the most part. Just have to re-paint the ceiling and have FH go in there and edge the ceiling. I edged all around the cabinets and tile in the shower, but I don't trust myself on the ceiling! Again, I hope I can finally get this presentable too this weekend!

We finally have a weekend with nothing going on, so we can really bust our butts this weekend!! Its supposed to be a high of 85 today and like 62 tomorrow, so we are going to try and get some yard work done tonight and use tomorrow as our errand day.

I was telling Justina in her journal, that there was a garden in the very rear of somebody's yard - its not ours, in fact, we have a little less land in the back then what we thought we did. Our lot shape is very weird to begin with, and there is no landscaping, so you can see everyone's houses. I absolutley can't wait to get some privacy trees/bushes back there! We are just very private people. I don't want to have to worry about being out on my patio, or in the hot tub and seeing a neighbor, right there.

So hopefully, this weekend - I can post some pictures!!!

So.... how'd the yard work go????

So.... how'd the yard work go????

We were only able to get a few hours in. I ripped out a bush-type-viney thing that was on the side by the patio and raked it all up and put grass seed in. Then, we raked over and put grass seed in some other spots where they had a swingset. We didn't get as much done as we would have hoped, it rained all weekend! :( But at least the grass seed is down!

We also need to figure out about those bushes I was talking about. I know some of them are ours, but there is just one little area I'm not sure about. In the next week or two, we are going to go and get some trees/bushes and plant those in the back for privacy. My brother is going to come over this week and I'm going to get his thoughts on what we should do.

So, since it was raining, we got a lot done in the house like.....THE LIVING ROOM!!! Its done!!!! Now, its time to decorate! :) The color we painted it, was too light for the big room. The room is like 20x15' I think. So, I picked up a gallon of a dark green color and made the wall with the fireplace an accent wall. I feel like it really gives the room some more depth because it is so big and really brings the colors all together. I'll take some pictures tonight. We also bought our shades over the weekend - WE HAVE PRIVACY AGAIN!! They look really really nice. I'm super pleased with them.

Also - the bathroom is ALMOST DONE!! We finished painting, so now, its just a matter of getting everything back in and up. I'm really excited! I think we decided that gutting the bathroom is going to be our winter project. There is too many other things that we want to get done outside and what not.

The kitchen is done...just waiting to go and get the new handles and clean up the cabinets, but the painting is done!!

I'm going to post some pics tonight - I have them taken, just not up.

I'm so happy that we had nowhere to be this weekend - it really allowed us to see some progress in the house!

I'm really pleased that with the tan color, the tile doesn't look as bad anymore! That is our new shower head! I might have to shower in there one night, to test it out!

I don't know why I'm so excited about the bathroom. I guess maybe because we couldn't use it for the last month and now its finally done. This is our guest bathroom, the bathroom where everyone who comes over will use. I guess its kinda our first step to finally having people over!!

I have some items that I will be able to use in their as far as decorations go, as well as the living room. Maybe I can get around to digging those up when my mom and dad come in tomorrow, you know, for more opinions ( I think Dan is pretty much over the paint and decorating aspect of things!! LOL!)

Haven't updated this in awhile, so here it goes!

I started putting things up on the walls a few weeks ago. I'm due for some pictures, I know! We've been kinda pre-occupied with the wedding now, because its coming up! :)

Yesterday though, we ripped out the hideous planting bed in front of the house. There was an overgrown tree/bush and two dead bushes and rocks. It just looked like garbage. So, we ripped it all out and took the rocks out so today, we just sit with dirt, which looks worlds better than whatever they had before. We are going to get some landscaping bricks to border and add a new planting bed.

Yesterday we bought some plants and FH's parents were needing to get rid of some of their plants in front that spread which started new plants and they needed to get out.

Tonight, we are going to measure for topsoil and mulch to hopefully get it on Wednesday.

We are going out of town for the weekend by my parents, so nothing will get done this weekend, but next weekend, we hope to paint and put the shutters up! I seriously cannot wait for that, I am so excited!

I hope to post pics soon of everything!

We also have been waiting to open a Home Depot card. You get a discount on that day's purchase as well 6 months free financing for all purchases of $299 or more. Since we will be spending about $1.59 per block and will need about 300 blocks, give or take a few, this may be good timing.

Still waiting on my stimulus check....:irked: Should be getting it anyday now, I hope!

I know, we used to do this everyday back and forth thing, and now...nothing!!

For us, we are tackling the landscaping outside. We started it, had a few days in and then we just can't get a good few hours in to keep it moving! Its so frustrating! We are hoping to get some top soil in this weekend and plant our plants and then get our mulch.

I'm constantly re-arranging my living room. I can't decide how I want it!

I also found this cool table/cabinet/buffet on Craiglist for my living room. I'm going to paint it and put some new hardware on it. I wanted something for storage for DVD's, and for a sofa table. I think this accomplished it!

I know, I know! LOL

First, wow! I can't believe we've been in the house 5 months already! We haven't been doing much with the wedding so close.

Since June - we've spent about $2000 on landscaping. Plants, top soil, mulch, weed killer :irked:. We've painted, added new outside lights. Inside, not much. We were so preoccupied with the outside, that the inside kinda stayed the way it was. They way we looked at it was we have all winter for inside projects, better work on the outside while we can!

As far as future projects, we are waiting to order some shutters for the house after the wedding and we are putting a light post in the front of the yard. We already have the light and the post (bought with the other new lights). We are also going to plant tress all along our property line. Its not that our neighbors are cr@ppy, its just we are private people. The only thing that is going to stink about the trees we want to plant is we want to get semi-big ones, so we are looking at about $100 a tree.

Also, we started up the hot tub (ya know, the one that was in the basement :gurn:) and IT WORKS! Some of the money we get from the wedding, we are going to build a nice deck and get that baby outside just in time for winter!!

I'll post some pictures soon. Its dark out right now, so the landscaping pictures wouldn't be much fun to look at! :)

I finally have pictures!!!! Better late than never..right?!

I'm going to get some of the inside. Not much has changed besides adding decor, but maybe I can get around to it this weekend. We are also planting a lot of trees this weekend in the back yard!!

Here is the outside before:

This one was in the snow, but you get a better idea of the color (I sware it was this yellow, but like the picture below it):

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/FutureMrsDM/House/Dog5weeks003.jpg?t=1255055694
We painted, added shutters, added light sconces by the garage, changed the one by the door with the new ones, ripped out the old planting bed and ugly dead bushes and added two new ones and added a maple tree!

Next year - The planting bed on the lower right hand corner will be expanded, and we have a matching light post to the sconce lights to go there, we will be added another tree on the corner of the house in that planting bed, adding a lot more bushes and plants to the planting beds by the house. Its hard to do everything at once when you aren't sure how it all is gonig to turn out!

Hopefully some more pictures this weekend!!

Oh yeah, I should mention that was DH's baby this summer. I sware we spent at least $500 on fertilizer and weed killer just to get it full and green.

We have a riding mower, a big green one to be exact ;). Its about 1 acre, it would take us forever to push! We just push the ditch because its too steep and trimming around trees.

I love it at the stores in our area. Even if you are rightfully one of the first in line, everyone just glares at you like you shouldnt be there. I especially loved last year when I got a digital camera on sale at KMart. Got the last one, and everybody flipped. Then, the 2GB SD cards were on sale for like 12, I think. I had to make several attempts at getting over to their location because it was a popular spot for the elderly to hang out for some reason.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/FutureMrsDM/House/March2010022.jpg?t=1269915386

The only thing left to do in this room is re-paint. I'm not happy with the colors of the paint. The main color is too light (lighter than I thought when we picked it out) and the accent wall, which we only did because I wanted some depth in the room after we painted the main color, is too green. I have colors picked out, but its not very high on my list at the moment.

KITCHEN:

Before: (when we moved in)

Our temporary "fix" after the cabinets came out:

AFTER!
Day:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/FutureMrsDM/House/March2010021.jpg?t=1269915802
Night:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/FutureMrsDM/House/March2010037.jpg?t=1269915818

The soffit came out, replaced that with two recessed lights which are on a dimmer. We took that ugly light out of the center of the kitchen and replaced it with a ceiling fan with a remote and we replaced the light over the sink with a recessed light (just painted ceiling, that is why it is hanging kind of low), party because the light was so close to the window, I couldn't get any window treatments behind it. Also took the 80's decorative piece from over the sink out. I'm so happy with the way this turned out.

We are also adding a corner shelf at the end of the breakfast bar (above the fruit basket). That should be done in a few days!

Our other project that we started last year and is one of our main projects this year is our backyard. We are adding our deck on, putting the hot tub outside and continuing to add some privacy to the back.

This was the yard prior to moving in:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/FutureMrsDM/House/House020.jpg?t=1269916046

AFTER:

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/FutureMrsDM/House/March2010023.jpg?t=1269915933

We added four trees in the back and are planning on adding more. That "mess" or planting bed in the back is coming out. Its hideous. We actually began ripping that stuff out tonight.

We also have painted the office and our bedroom, but I have some finishing touches to add to those before posting pictures! Hopefully within the next few days!

We are thinking about doing a color like this - http://www.myperfectcolor.com/v/vspfiles/photos/MPC0080755-2T.jpg

Its like a beige/grey. I think it would make our couches pop a little bit more, they are sage.

I'm also considering doing a dark green/grey on the wall with the fireplace, but I'm not sure. I think when we do decide to paint, I'll decide on the accent wall afterwards.

I'm trying to decide on a color to paint the kitchen. I'm not happy with the current color.

I'm torn between doing something neutral and something fun and bright. When I think about fun and bright I get scared and want to do neutral, but then I think neutral may be too borning.

Here is the color I'm almost 100% decided on, but I'm afraid its going to be too dark with our dark cabinets. I need some honest opinions!

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/FutureMrsDM/kitchen004.jpg?t=1272832383

I've also decided on a color for the living room, which I think will compliment this color so well (another reason why I'm leaning towards it) I pulled this off of google:
http://35life.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/img_27001.jpg

Its like a grey/green/yellow.

So, opinions about the kitchen color please!!! :)

I like the kitchen color - it's not so wacky that you're gonna grow to hate it. It's a good neutral. When I moved in here the kitchen was painted a bright yellow - cool, I thought - it seemed like such a happy color. But after a year I got so sick of it and decided that it needed a different color - so I picked green - now I hate that. I sort of wish I had just painted it white and had been done with it.

I have to be honest Jeanne and I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the color. I think it may make your kitchen too dark and make it look small and closed in.

But then again I'm just seeing a picture and not seeing it in person so you can probably gauge that better than I.

You mention neutrals and wacky colors - why not do an accent wall with a bright fun color and the rest a neutral color?

But if you love the color and than I think you can make it work!

Thanks Ashley, I really do appreciate your opinions! I've thought about the accent color, but I'm not sure how I'd pull it off because I don't have a lot of empty wall space besides for one wall. But, when you stand from the living room looking into the kitchen at the one wall, you would see three different colors. I'm afraid it would be too overwhelming.

I'm not a huge fan of the kitchen color. I light light/bright kitchens and that is just too dark for my taste.

What about painting the kitchen the same as the living room and then doing an accent wall in a different color?

As the computer was loading the pictures RC walked by and he stopped to take a look. He said the color is to close to the color of the cabinets and something lighter would be better. I kinda agree with him. I love color in the kitchen, I've got Blue wall paper next to my cherry cabinets.

Thanks everyone! Your opinions were what I didn't want to admit! LOL I like the color, but I agree, it needs to be lighter. DH doesn't like the idea of an accent wall at all, especially since we have an accent wall in the living room.

I'm wondering if we can go back to the store where we got the paint and see what some lighter options would be. I don't mind the color we have now, but I don't love it either. I wish it was a little more brown/orange and less peach.

I'm chiming in late (again  ) but I have to agree with Ashley and Nikki... I am not a fan of the color :( . For me, I love my kitchen bright and cheery. That color is kinda.... depressing to me, maybe because the cabinets are so dark. But then again.. it's YOUR kitchen, not mine ;)

So do you have a specific theme you're going with or just earth tones?

I  the living room inspiration color!!! It's really.... peaceful!

See and whats hard is I get a TON of light in my kitchen. But you all are right - the darker color against the dark cabinets doesn't look right, except for the eat in area. Then at night its really dark.

My current kitchen stuff is very mediterranean with oranges, reds, yellows and greens. I have canisters in this print:

I love the color theme... So what about pulling the lighter color out of the canisters? I mean, the yellow base color is almost what you have already right? How 'bout the lighter colored leaves, or is that too green/living room green?

Hmmm.... I think you've got such great taste it's going to look awesome in the end, it's just getting there that is the big step lol.

I've always wanted an orange/terra cotta kitchen. I don't know why - but even when I look at color selections in the store or online, I immediately go for the orange tones. I could do yellow too, I suppose. My floor is like a golden oak, so I try and stay away from the gold tones, even though I'm also drawn to those.

So, that is why I'm trying to find a light clay color (orange/brown). I think it would give me a good medium. Now if only I could find that perfect color :urgh:

Yeah, we are having a hard time picking a color for that room - mostly because of the same things you mentioned. It has to work well with the living room, and the cabinets are dark!

I think that if we do paint in there (right now it's "Tuscan Beige" - basically a light cream color that is all over the house) we will do a lighter grey/green kind of color (actually kinda like #3 on the Martha Stewart thing). We want to go with a color that is in the granite counter top and that grey/green will work the best with the counter, cabinets and stainless appliances. We don't have a lot of bright colors in our kitchen like you guys do though....

I really like it! Your dishes are gonna pop when you have them set out.

I need to get pictures up of the kitchen, but haven't had time with the end of the school semester!

What we ended up doing was this - I brought the container of paint into Sherwin Williams, said the color was a bit too dark, what can you do? The lady was kinda rude, and wasn't really listening when I tried explaining what I was going for (the wet look). So she asked me the color number, looked on the wall or samples and said "well, if it was a certain color/number, I would have just suggested the next color up on the swatch" :censored:...um...DUH!?

Anyways, she suggested that we can do a percentage of the full color. So where the sample I had was 100% color, we ended up doing 80% color.

Its not much lighter, but I think it took the deep red tone out of the color and looks a little lighter. I LOVE IT! I was worried at first because I wasn't sure if it was going to be too dark and make the room feel small (it doesn't), it would be too drab (its not) and if it would accent the kitchen well enough (it does)! So, I will get some pictures tonight when I get home. It feels warm, but yet fun. The countertops look great next to the color and the floors pop. The only thing that doesn't look the greatest is the kitchen table, but we were planning on getting a new one eventually anyways, so its no big deal!

I got a sample of the living room color was leaning towards and I don't like it. I think its too yellow/greeny and I was hoping for more of a yellow/gray/green.

Pictures tonight! :)

Yay Jeanne I can't wait to see the kitchen!!!! What kind of dining table do you plan on getting? Like an enameled table? Natural wood? I'm curious :)

I'd like to have a wood table. I really like this set:

But one of the things I really want is a leaf in it. We have one currently like that, but its more of the oval shaped table (we only have four chairs, and I'd like six) and I'd like for our new table to be a square at its smallest, instead of round. We don't have a small kitchen, but its rectangular shaped, so the round look kind of makes furniture placement difficult. Plus, typically I find square tables a bit bigger than round tables. Which would be great for everyday use, even when we have kids. It wouldn't be until we had guests over, or for Holidays I'd put the leaf in.

I love it - and I totally agree. I love the idea that it can go from square to family size in a matter of a leaf or 3 :)
