Just wondering what you take for prenatals. Do you get them from your doctor or are they something you can pick up from a drug store? I'm thinking since Matt and I are going to be TTC come September, I may want to start taking them :bbeek:

I started taking them last month for the same reason. I just replaced my reg. vitamins with the prenatals. Got mine at Wal-mart. For some reason all the prenatals were on clearance for $3. I couldn't pass up that kind of deal. But generally, I think they are like $6 for 120 vitamins.

Right now I'm using a Women's One a Day with 400mg of Folic Acid. This is what my OB told me. When I do get pregnant I need to increase my Folic Acid to 800mg, but One a Day makes a prenatal vitamin with 800 mg Folic Acid.

You should be taking a vitamin daily during TTC. Doctor's orders ;)

I bought a bottle at Walgreen's, and must admit I don't take them regularly. I just hate taking daily pills (hence my first surprise pregnancy...hee hee!)

I really need to do better with taking them.

Thanks ya'll! I plan on going to the doc just to make sure I'm all normal and stuff, but I can start taking prenatals before going to the doc. I hate going to the doc :irked: Guess I should get used to it lol.

You can buy them at any pharmacy without an rx, but the ones otc ones are not as strong as the prescription ones (the mg of vitamins are not as high in the otc ones). I seen an advertisement the other day the Meijer offers free prenatal vitamins, I don't know if they meant otc or prescription though!

I take nature promise or nature valley (can't remember the brand, but doesn't make a difference anyways) Folic Acid, 800mg. I get it at CVS.

It was years ago but I took Materna - giant horse sized pills, before, during and after pregnancy.

For some reason all the prenatals were on clearance for $3. I couldn't pass up that kind of deal.

Check the expiry date. They will usually mark them down when they are close to being expired. Even if they are past the expiry date, it's not like they are dangerous but they might loose some efficacy/potency (about 5% I was told).

I started taking OTC ones at first, then was prescribed a stronger version by my doctor (which is nice since insurance covered it and they ended up being cheaper for me than buying OTC). But eventually, I was having trouble with all the extra iron and my bloodwork was good (no problem with anemia), so at the doctor's orders, switched to Flintstones vitamins, believe it or not, since the iron was lower but still had folic acid, etc...

This is a question best answered by your OB/GYN, since they know your history, your bloodwork and your body... Every woman is a little different. Not a bad idea to visit the OB soon if you are thinking of TTC.

I took and will start taking again the prenatals that I got at walmart. They are a little lower in the folic acid compaired to the perscribed pills (like someone else mentioned.)
When I got pregnant the prenatals (both otc and perscription) made me feel sick. Although I never had a problem when TTC. My doctor also suggested taking the flinstone vitamins. Since you need to take 2 to get enough I could take them at different times, one in the morning and one at night. That way I wasn't feeling sick from having it all at once.

When i was pregnant I took first took the over the counter stuff, one a day brand. The after 1st dr appointment i took prescribed kind. The over the counter brand made it hard to go number 2, if you know what I mean. The prescribed kind fixed that problem. Both made me pretty nauseous, and no it wasn't morning sickness, i only got sick about 30 min after taking the pills.

At my follow up appointment i asked my ob should i still take them while we are trying again, and he said no a daily vitamin for women would be better. He said prenatatels have more of the daily vitamins than you need (unless you are pregnant). and if you are not pregnant your body dosne't store that stuff so you just waste it. such as more than 400mcg of folic acid just goes to waste unless you are pregnant.

I have been taking one a day womens vitamines, but those too make me nasuous.

My OBGYN told me it didn't matter what I took as long as I increased Folic Acid.

We are going to be starting to TTC around the same time :) I'm planning on getting some prenatals, or at least some folic acid to start taking soon. Sadly I'm not good at taking them on my own, but for a baby, I think I can try to remember :)

We'll start a reminder thread  We'll have a new group of gals TTC by then :whoohoo: I can't wait! Let me know when you start taking them and what you're taking! I'm going to hit Wally World and see what I can find that's *natural* if possible.

I picked up my prenatals over the weekend. I'm taking Rainbow Light Prenatal Vitamins. I got them in the vitamin section at a natural foods store where I used to work. They have 800mg folic acid and pretty good levels of Vitamins A and C, which I also heard were important.

So far I've been taking them every day, but I'm usually terrible at keeping up with my vitamins!

I did get some multivitamins... simple, everyday ones. I can't take them without food or I get heart burn :irked:

So I've been consistent about 75% of the time LOL!

Dangit! I gotta get on it!

Jacklynn, are you taking prenatals yet??

The ones I got are not 'women's' but they've got 400 mg of folic acid so I figured I got that part covered :)

Mine were perscription, and made me really sick to the stomach, but all vitamins do:irked:
