So I'm all snuggled up and warm in bed last night getting ready for sleep when RC says he has a riddle for me. I enjoy a good stretch of the brain so I said go ahead.

There are 7 girls in a bus
Each girl has 7 backpacks
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats
For every big cat there are 7 little cats
Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

Need less to say I was up for the next hour trying to figure this out. Can you?

I don't have the brain power to do adding up.

But is there someone driving the bus too?

I hate riddles/puzzles because they make me feel dumb but .... I am smart enough to google. Do you want the answer?

I have nooo clue. And judging from the title, even if I try and add up all the legs, I'll still be off. lol So I'll just wait for the answer. :)

DING DING DING And we have a winner!!!!!

I prefer the riddle answer because doing the math hurts my brain!

As a riddle, the answer is zero legs on the bus since the bus has wheels instead of legs.

I still don't get it even with it mapped out

But as a maths problem; It's not a tricked question -- just a straightforward maths problem
Confirmed answer is 10990 legs.
§ Let's say the whole situation simply :
- There are 7 girls.
- Each girl has 7 backpack
- Each backpack has 7 big cats
- Each big cat has 7 little small cats.
§ Question: How many legs are there in the bus?
§ Let's focus on each part of the question systematically, write down on a piece of paper if you have to, following my steps of chains.
1. Focus on the first girl first:
A B C D E F
Girl A has 7 backpacks

2. Now focus on first backpack A1 :
A1 A2 A3 A4 A5 A6 A7
Backpack A1 has 7 big cats

3. Now focus on first big cat :
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Ø Each big cats have 7 small cats (that's the end of the focus)
Systematically, 7 small cats has 28 legs (7 * 4) combined with the big cat that owns this 7 small cats.
Let's call this the "cat chain", so cat chain 1 has 32 legs altogether.
Ø So since there are 7 big cats
7 * 32 = 224 legs
Ø Therefore each backpack has 224 legs
Ø Finally, each girl has 7 * 224 = 1568 legs.
Lastly, since there are 7 girls, A to F, there are 7 * 1568 legs (per girl) = 10976 legs.
Now, since each girl also has 2 legs each;
SO, (7 * 2) + 10976 = 10990 legs altogether
Note: Disregarding bus driver, buses and etc…Only focus on the girl and their backpacks!

Well, I missed it the first time because I didn't read carefully- I missed that each girl had 7 backpacks and only gave them one! I always hated word problems in school, but if you disect this one piece by piece, it is actually not all that hard. (As long as you have a calculator that is!)

I think my main problem was it was 11:30 at night I was ready to go to sleep and all of the sudden all I could do was count cats, backpacks and girls. so at 12:30 when I finally got it and could crawl back to bed my brain hurt and RC was still laughing at me. I am so going to get him back. Although he can do math in his head so it is going to have to be a doozy.

I still don't get it even with it mapped out

It is easier mapped out like this:

7 girls have 2 legs = 14
7 girls x 7 backpacks = 49
49 backpacks x 7 cats = 343
343 cats x 4 legs =1372
343 cats x 7 kittens =2401
2401 kittens x 4 legs = 9604
14+1372+9604 = 10,990 legs

I have a theory .... someone prove me wrong -

Creative/artistic types use the right side of their brain more but math/puzzles/problems are things that work the left side of the brain. As such, artsy fartsy people normally do not excel (or enjoy) puzzles/math/problems.

Make sense?

I am also very visual. I would have to see those 7 girls, 7 backpacks, 7 big cats & 7 little cats to "get it" :)

Well now that is easier. Why did they have to make the above solution so complicated?!!!

I would totally agree with you on this one Elizabeth! I'm much better at creative things than I am math, but I do try to break down math problems with common sense. I can do addition and subtraction and even division and multiplication, but when you start adding x+y=z to the mix, I'm stumped!

hehe I hate word problems but I'm very good at math.... and I'm very artistic. My teachers in college thought I was always in the wrong class because why would a music major be in higher math classes? They were flabbergasted when I finished 2nd in the class (by like 2/10's of a point). I've never really gotten the division that everyone talks about but I do see it in alot of my friends.

As for the visual, as a person who also very much enjoys teaching and learning new stuff, I've found that everyone is different in how they teach. The best teachers are the ones able to change to accommodate differing learning styles. Some people learn best by seeing things... some learn best by just hearing them... others really need to have something they are interested incorporated into the learning process... and still others just need motivation - be it competition or a necessity of life.
