So I've been charged with the job of hanging new wallpaper in my mom's hallway (to start :irked:) and I've never done it before. She explained basically how you do it and I think I get it, but if anyone has any helpful tips I'd appreciate it!

Does it have any kind of horizontal lines that you will have to match up? If so, be careful ..... wallpaper can stretch after it's been dampened (i found that out when I was hanging wallpaper in my baby's room). Ever since then I have stayed away from horizontal patterns LOL

Here are some DIY links (it's really not all that hard) - http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=diy+hanging+wallpaper&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

Honestly, my suggestion is don't. Sponge paint, stencil, make a mural, anything but wallpaper. The hanging isn't so bad, but the removal is AWFUL!

 have you had a bad experience?

The newer wallpapers aren't all that hard to remove but she brings up a good point (just in case) .... make sure you love it or that you are going to leave it!

We had to rent a steamer and use wallpaper remover to get off the stuff they put up in our house. DH was cursing throughout the whole process. :icon_barbar:

A friend from school used a steamer to remove wallpaper in Her Bedroom.
The daft bint left it on and went out. :bbeek:
Came home to find the Bedroom door open and the wallpaper off the walls.

Plus the wallpaper on the stairs, the bathroom and the toilet.

Her Mum was not best pleased. And still talks about it to this day.

26 years later!!! LOL.

My experience of wallpapering is that it takes twice the time and ten times the patience of what you are expecting. Also, don't rely on the glue in those that come with the glue already on. I tried that once and ended up thanking the gods for spray on glue. I will say after I glued down the spots that didn't seem to hold properly it did look great, though.

Well I started it and had trouble hanging it, and realized I didn't even like it much. I gave up for awhile and tried again and my mom came home on my second attempt... and she didn't like it either! So we scrapped that particular wallpaper and have been dragging our heels about picking out a new one... and a couple days ago Mom decided we should just paint that wall. Woooo!! So I spackled, sanded and primed today and will be painting later this evening or tomorrow. So. Much. Easier.

Oh, phew! I was seriously about to type "My advice is don't do it!" but firespirit beat me to it! My parents live in a gorgeous old (1920's) house that was completely wallpapered in the 80's. The wallpaper was so hideous. I have helped my mom scrape a ton of wallpaper, and it is awful! Truly!

Not to mention paint looks nicer! What color did you pick?!

We have a bathroom in the house we are buying that has terrible horrible wallpaper. I soooo don't want to work that hard, but it simply cannot stay! This thread makes me shudder just thinking about it!

DH suggests - plenty of sleep the night before + patience + a steamer + wall paper remover + a scouring thingy and a good stiff drink as a reward for when you are done. :)

Haha, good to know! I will definitely keep that in mind. The bathroom is going to be a nightmare!
