So Ive been thinking of sewing my own sashes and chair covers. Renting them just seems so expensive! Im having to cover 40 tables and 300 chairs, not including the cake table, bride and groom table. Has anyone done this before any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have heard of people that made chair bows and such, but not chair covers. I guess it could be done if you had some skills and a pattern ... and time.

:goodluck:

I think if you sew ALL 300 chair covers, you'll be sewing all the way up to your wedding day. :/ That's an intense amount of work.

Maybe you can rent the chair covers and put them on yourselves, cutting out delivery and set up fee the linen company would charge? And there are even some online rental companies that will ship them to you. Don't know the price on that though. And the sashes you could probably do yourself. Those are just edge finished strips of fabric.

I'm ALL for DIY, but I think you're numbers would work against you in this case. :/ Have you thought about doing other things yourself to cut down costs, and then be able to afford the linen done by somone else?

diy table cloths can actually be pretty easy, but chair covers not so much. One alternative:

Take a length of tulle or other inexpensive fabric of your choice 45-54' wide. Fold the fabric in half, then sort of gather it in your hands and wrap around the chair back tying in a knot. You want the fold side to the top and the knot on the outside back of chair. Now reach over and grab the top edge of the fabric where it was folded and pull it over the top of the chair back. Secure with two safety pins (I don't recommend pearl head pins, I've seen people squeezing between chairs scratched by them). You can secure a bow with the safety pins to cover the mechanics, but I suggest a simple floral spray or bow on a pick or fairly short length of florist wire because it's faster to just drop between the two safety pins and you are done. Generally 5 yards of fabric does three chairs. This works well with tulle, illusion, organza, or lace to name just a few, but generally is better with lighter fabrics

Thanks so much for the help! I've thought about just making the sashes and table clothes and just sucking up the cost and renting the chair covers. I was watching a wedding show on WE channel yesterday and they had these chair covers that I guess had extra fabric to tie a bow on the back so Im gonna visit my local decorators and explain what I saw and hopefully get some aid there.

My sister considered having a seamstress make chair covers for her, but fabric is so expensive! She decided the chair covers really weren't worth it.

I was going to make the chair covers instead of renting because it is kind of pricy, but when I went to price the fabric it ends up being close to the same amount about 100.00 diff. Making chair covers are also very time consuming. My mothers a seamstress and was willing to help make them but I think it will be a stressful task so i decided to rent mine. If you do decide to make them then speak to the manager and since u are buying a large bulk they will give u a discount.

our wedding will hopefully be outdoors. i'm renting white folding chairs(60/$1.40pc)...then i was taking whatever color we use, and getting tulle in that color, and making a sash around the back.....but my mom suggested instead to get a bolt of black satin, having it cut into 6 inch wide/1ft long strips, and tying them only to the chairs that will line the walkway...and then rather than getting the round or rectangular wood tables, i'm going to rent the rectangular white rubbermaid style tables, and using the rest of the satin(cut into however long, and 6 inches wide), and making table "drapes" and using single fake flowers for each of the table corners.....i'll post a pic later.....well of the price/etc
