I am probably past due for doing this, but I need to call the hotel we want to have people stay at to block rooms.
We figured out we probably want to ask for 20 rooms... but do we need to know what types of rooms? I'm not sure how many guests will be with other people and who will come alone; we've got a couple family members that might stay alone. Is it best to just do the double rooms?
I'm not sure why this is intimidating me so much. I usually hate calling places, but this hotel thing has been a very bad procrastination thing for me.
I believe when you request to block rooms, it's typically applied to their "standard" rooms - whether that be double beds or king/queen beds. Our hotel only has a few double rooms and their standard rooms are the king/queen beds, so our blocking is applicable for those rooms only.
If their standard rooms are the double beds, maybe you could ask them to throw in a handful of king/queen beds to the mix for your block. They may/may not do this for you, but it's worth asking!

I would definitely call soon. We called in January (5 months before the wedding) and a lot of the hotels were already booked. It also depends on what is going on in your town that weekend. We picked one of the busiest weekends of the summer so hopefully you'll have better luck.
We just asked for the standard rooms which are the double beds and figured if that doesn't work for our guests then they can sort that out with the hotel.
I didn't want to call to block off rooms either so I gave that assignment to my mom. lol

I just blocked our rooms. I would do it asap. i'm getting married in the off season for weddings etc. so it wasn't too much of an issue. I didn't really get too choose what kind of beds I got. I booked a block of rooms with two hotels. One hotel is a little fancier than the other. But I wanted to give them a choice. In the "less" fancier one (still a nice hotel though) we got all queen beds. and with the nicest hotel we got 7 rooms with 2 queen beds in each room with a pull out sofa and 7 rooms with one king bed and a pull out sofa.

Most hotels will have a way they like to do this; as said before, it is probably "standard" rooms.
I would do this soon as the availability may be less in the summer.

When I did mine, I actually had to tell them how many of each kind of room I wanted (I just did half doubles, half kings) but they also said there may be some flexibility when people call to actually make their reservations.
I was also really intimidated by the prospect of blocking the hotel rooms, so I went and did it in person and it was actually really nice - they let me look at the rooms and then gave me a piece of paper to confirm that we had them all blocked. It made things so much easier to actually deal with a real person (who was VERY nice and helpful!)

While I personally didn't make the call, etc...but our hotel didn't have enough of one kind of room so we have a variety of rooms with varying prices which will be good for guests as it's first come first serve on choice of room, etc.
We booked ours last summer since there aren't many hotels in our town and our date is really popular.

If it's a hotel that does this often they will probably be able to talk you through it. When I worked at a hotel we did this ALL the time and we knew what to ask to determine what would be suit the person's needs. As the other ladies stated, it is typically the standard room that gets blocked. A lot of hotels have standard rooms in both a king or two doubles, and usually the guests can just tell their preference. Other hotels you may have to tell them what you estimate to be a count of each. Either way, it'll be ok! :)
