I thought I would start a thread about where everyone is from. Some of us don't have this info in our profile.

I was born in Oceanside, California, which is San Diego County (Navy brat); but I have lived on and off in Phoenix, Arizona since I was 5 years old, and still live there today and probably always will.

I was born in Detroit, MI. We moved around a whole lot during my childhood, just because my family was unstable and dysfunctional, but we always stayed in the metro Detroit area. Well, except for one year in IN. When I was 10 we moved back to detroit and I lived tehre until I was 22. Now I live in Farmington Hills, MI, whuch is just a suburb of Detroit!!! I hope to someday move out of state!!!

I was born in Steubenville, Ohio but grew up in New Manchester, West Virginia. (They are only about 20 minutes apart) I spent a few years during college living in and around Washington, DC. Now, I call Pittsburgh, PA home.

Ok, I could get a map out and figure this out, but I'm lazy. I am really bad about knowing where the states are east of Texas. Sorry, Lacey! Is Pittsburgh near Ohio? Since you grew up in West Virginia, do you have a southern accent, Lacey?

Angel, in Phoenix there is not really a defining industry here. But in Detroit, you guys have a huge one. Is most people's jobs and lives in Detroit somehow centered around the motor industry? What I mean is, are cars the center of the universe in Detroit? I always wondered if that was the case in places like Detroit.

Actually WV, PA, and OH all touch. The eastern boards of Ohio runs along WV and the Northeastern part of Ohio shares a boarder with PA up near lake Erie. Then the Northern panhandle of WV juts up between the two. To be honest right now living in Pittsburgh I am about 40 minutes from where I grew up in West Virginia and and 60 minutes from where I was born in Ohio.

No Southern accent at all. I grew up further north than people in Pittsburgh and DC. I'm definately a Yankee girl all the way.

You know how you have a certain idea of what one of us girls sound like on here? Well, I never, in all my wonderings about you, ever imagined you to have a southern accent. Not that it is bad to have a southern accent at all, it just totally threw me that you might have one. I lived in North Carolina for 5 months out of my entire 50 years of life, and to this day, people ask me if I am from the south. Nope, born in California and raised in Arizona. lol

Well, I would say that even as early as 25 years ago, Detroit was centered around the automotive industry, and still is to some degree!!! It is the major industry in this area, and even alot of the people who do not work for the BIG 3 have ties somehow. There are many smaller companies that have contracts with the Ford, Chrysler, or GM, plus the companies that provide supplies, clean the factories, or many other sevrices. On top of that tehrea re all of the Engineers that work fo rone of teh major 3 companies or for another company that is contracted through them. Although MI has grown and branched out into other areas, there is no question that without the BIG 3, the area, especially metropolitan Detroit would go into economic shock!!! Neither Joel or I are usually connected to the automotive industry, but in my current position I am employed by someone who does, so it would definitely effect me too!!!

Yes, there are Canadians here. They are some of our best regulars here.

Elizabeth, I'm sorry but I am just so curious about Canada, and I have never been there. I only know what I have seen in the news or in movies. Since you live in Quebec, do you have to speak french or can you get by without it? If that is a dumb question, please forgive me.

I was born just outside of Washington DC and spent the first few years of my life in Gaithersburg, MD. My mother, sister, and I moved to Berkley, MI (just outside of Detroit) just after my grandfather passed away (so that Mama wouldn't have to worry about mortgage payments on her own anymore).

I spent two years of college in the Upper Peninsula (the 51st state!) in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. That's actually a twin city with Sault Ste. Marie, Canada and we used to go there all the time. The only thing that separated us was the river and the freighter channel they dug thirty some odd years ago. Then, I very stupidly moved my butt to Texas. I spent a few months living in Fort Worth, TX before I moved into an apartment in Denton, TX and finished up the last two years of college there. I met the real man of my dreams, and much to my mother's pleasure, moved to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (just north of Akron - the rubber capital of the world...ooo la la, about forty five minutes to an hour south of Cleveland).

Karen, to answer a few questions for you. Pittsburgh is about an hour and a half from where I live in Ohio. It's about forty five minutes from Youngstown, Ohio, which is right on the border of Ohio and Pennsylvania. And no, it is not illegal to drive a foreign car in Detroit. In fact, I think some people do it to get back at the car industries that are still there because they keep closing plants and laying off workers to move overseas.

Detroit has a very sad story to it; as does the rest of the midwest. The midwest depended greatly on industry and with the economy as sad looking as it is (I know, it's getting better, but it's going to take a lot of getting better to be a reasonably okay economy) and the tax breaks the president signed for companies to move their labor overseas, there isn't much left in the midwest. Everywhere else, schools are going up by the dozens. They're certifying teachers before they take any education classes and then sending them to school for free! But in the midwest, they're laying off teachers, closing schools, and the unemployment rate is some of the highest in the country.

If you have any other questions that I might know the answer to, I'd love to answer it for you!

I learned French in school and I do have to use it where I work occasionally, but I speak English at home & with my friends. French Canadians can tell right away that I am English by my poor French accent - and yes, they cut me some slack because of it. LOL

Most people, in Montreal at least, can speak both languages. Although there are some stories to the contrary, you really don't need to speak French to visit, but the locals love it when tourists try! Hand gestures work well too :) I guess it's pretty much like any foreign speaking place.

The best time to visit Montreal is in June or July for the following -

International Fireworks Festival
International Jazz Festival (many, many free acts to see on the street)
Grand Prix Montreal
International Comedy Festival (many, many free acts to see on the street)
Montreal's Carifiesta

Montreal's Must see's -

Old Montreal
The Old Port
Montreal's look out point
The Botanical Gardens
The Eco Museum
The Underground City
The Olympic Stadium (1976 Olympics)
Casino de Montreal

I drive a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. It is not usually too much of an issue if someone drives a foriegn car, but at the same time, I don't come from a family that really worked in the plants, so it is probably more of an issue in some familes. At the same time the metro Detroit area is so diverse that foreign cars are very common as well!!!

I was born in Houston, TX and we lived near Houston until I was 13. Then we moved North East of Houston, between Beaumont and Houston. The town I live in is Hardin, TX. We have a population of about 700 people. We can't even have a Hardin address unless you have a post office box.

I have also spent some time in Huntsville, TX for college, but now I commute. For a semester I also lived with Justin's dad in North Zulch, TX which is near College Station. He was student teaching at the time and could not work, so we lived there. (The worst semester of my entire life!)

I would like to move away from Texas for awhile at least. I have been to some pretty nice places that I wouldn't mind calling home. My whole family is in Texas, except a few relatives in New Mexico. We are pretty spread out throughout the state though.

Aside from that I've lived in pretty much the same area in Georgia all my life.

I would love to move to Florida one day, I think the Tampa Bay area.

I had no idea about the midwest, Kelli! How sad is that? I hope the economy continues to get better just because of all the midwesterners that I now am quite fond of here on Onewed. That's cool to be able to go back and forth from Canada to the U.S. I have never done that before. When you live close to D.C., do you go see the White House, the Capital, and the Lincoln Memorial and all of that? I have never seen any of those buildings and I would just love it! Have you been inside any of them? What was that like? Thanks for being so nice and helpful, Kelli!!

Thank God we didn't get it as bad as New Orleans and Mississppi during Katrina! But you guys in Florida seem to always take a beating. Actually last year all the Gulf Coast states got a hurricane. No, not bad at all. But she did tell me that it's a $38 flight from Phoenix. Now, that's not bad at all! LOL!!

I'm actually closer to Kelli and Amy than to Nikki eventhough we live in the same state. That is one of the downfalls in living in a state shaped like a giant rectangle.

LOL!! Ok, I had to break out a map of the USA so I could speak a little bit intelligently about this. Lacey, I swear to God it took me five minutes to find Pennsylvania. I had no idea that it was so far east. I was looking for it in the middle part of the US. I am really, really bad about knowing where the states are. I took that timed test where you have a US map that is blank and you fill in the states. I sucked at that. I think I got 10 out of 50 states right. My co-worker got all of them right. I was kind of ashamed of myself.

You guys are really close to NY, which I think is very cool. The states in the upper eastern US would take a lot less time to drive across than the states in the western US. Like Pennsylvania is about 1/4 the size of Arizona. And Arizona is about 1/3 the size of Texas. And talk about a rectangle, California is really a lonnnnnnnnnnng state. LOL!

I was born in Dubuque, Iowa (right at the intersect of Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin). I lived there for 18 years and then after graduating high school, I moved to Ames, Iowa (almost smack dab in the center of Iowa). I lived there for about 9 months and the moved up to Waterloo, Iowa (about 100 miles west of Dubuque) and lived there for about a year and a half. Then moved back to Dubuque for 7 months and we just got done moving to Davenport, Iowa (about 70 miles south of Dubuque). So I've been all over the state....and I also decided that I won't live any further west in Iowa than Waterloo....I hate the western half of Iowa...Ames just SUCKED to live there....everyone was so rude.

My husband was born in Davenport. His parents lived out there for several years while his dad was in chiropractic school.

That's because Texas is like going through about two or three states. It's huge!!! LOL!

That's not that bad of a drive. To get from here to the New Mexico/Texas border you have to drive pretty much all day. The worst part of most of our trips is getting out of the state!
