I think it's time for me to start a journal so that I can put some order into my wedding planning and have everything in one place.
Weddings and wedding planning is so different from planning in the USA. Explaining how things are done here might sound complicated but in the end, weddings here are simple and can be easily planned in a couple of months.
But first, the story of
How we met
We met two days before Easter through a mutual friend. I have heard about him so many times before we met but I never really paid attention or showed interest in meeting him because at that time I was overwhelmed with exams. A couple of months later, I was out with some old friends. As we were going down the stairs to leave the place, I saw him standing next to my friend. He looked amazing. My friend introduced me and we started talking. I knew at that point that something wonderful is about to happen. From his point of view, seeing me coming down the stairs was like a movie scene :) Me, all dressed up and my prince waiting for me at the end of the staircase. :) We went out together several times and we've been together ever since.
So here we are, after almost 6 years, planning our summer wedding. We aren't engaged and there's no proposal yet (engagements and proposals take place a couple of weeks or a month before the wedding here) but with our busy lives we have to start planning right away.
So far we've only set the date, July 25th 2009, decided on the venue and number of guests (around 200 people). Everything else is mixed up in my head, so as soon as I sort things out and decide on something I'll post that in my journal.

We booked a band for the wedding reception (actually, for the whole wedding). We don't do DJ's for weddings here - only bands playing live, so it's quite difficult to find a good band for a reasonable price. I'm so relieved we found one. One more thing to cross out from the long, long list.

Almost 5 months until our wedding! I'm so excited! But not stressed at all, although we haven't planned much.
Some of the things that I don't have to do is look for bridesmaids' dresses or groomsmen tuxedos because there are no bridesmaids or groomsmen at weddings here. The only wedding party attendants are the Best man and two other men from FH's family which are important for the church ceremony. They all pay for their attire. The Best man has the rings with him and there's no ringbearer.
As far as stationery is concerned, there are no STDs, no RSVPs, just the invitation itself (which is handed to the guest in person, and not mailed - only guests from anothery city or country get invitations by mail). People RSVP on the phone.
We are going to look at invitations tomorrow and hopefully decide on one. Trying on dresses will probably take place sometime nexth month. I can hardly wait!

Actually that sounds wonderful. Less postage, less wasted paper, less time getting it all together...but maybe more time delivering. :) But also a chance to show off your engagement ring and see friends and loved ones so over all doesn't sound too bad.
Tell us more about the wedding ceremony traditions in your country, I'm so intrigued!

Delivering invitations is a bit time-consuming but I don't have to do all of that by myself - family members (usually mother and father) help by delivering invitations to relatives. The bride and groom are in charge of inviting their friends and co-workers.

Haven't done much planning lately since we're too busy with the house (we are having the heating installed, deciding on a kitchen design and ordering one), but I talked to my hairdresser yesterday and booked her :) I have been going there on a regular basis, at least once a month, for 5 years now, so she knows what I want and what will look good on me.
There's a bridal show at the end of March here so I'll wait to see if I find something there since there's 50% discount on almost everything.

4 months till our wedding! We signed the contract for the venue a few days ago and decided on the food and drinks served at the reception. In the menu that we chose there's no limit on drinks so I don't really have to worry about supplying all that.
I haven't been able to travel to the capital since it's been snowing for a week now and we are cut off - hope it'll get better this weekend so that I can go to the bridal show.
I've been thinking about colors - chocolate brown is my favourite and I really like the combo with light green. But I would also like to incorporate silver. Haven't seen any pictures of this color combo so I don't really know if it'll look good.
Opinions are appreciated. Pictures, too. :)

I think the brown, green, and silver would be a beautiful combo. My dad and step-mom used some of the light green with silver and it looked great. I have seen lots of the brown and green which is also gorgeous (it's what we are using for our rehearsal dinner). I don't have any pictures to share, but i really love the idea!

Thanks! I'll try to find something at the bridal show this weekend to see how it looks! I've also been thinking of using crystals so I might go with the chocolate brown and green and add crystals instead of the silver.

Just got back from the bridal show in the capital. There were so many fresh ideas that inspired me and made me want to do more DIY stuff. I tried on a couple of dresses (no pics :() but still didn't find the one. I'll be looking at dresses next week too, so I hope I'll find my dream dress. I did buy a bag and two pairs of shoes (I'm a big "bags and shoes" fan). The shoes are not wedding related but i just couldn't resist.:) And here's my bag.

I've been looking at dresses last week but I didn't find anything I liked. So, I talked to a seamstress and she agreed to make my dress. I'm so excited! I can't wait to see my dress. She'll probably have it ready by the end of June.
We decided to do our own invitations, favours and table numbers (which is pretty rare here, because almost everyone just orders them). I started working on something and as soon as I have a picture of it I'll share.
Not wedding related but an exciting update is the fact that we ordered our kitchen. :whoohoo: It's supposed to be finished by the end of May, so we are impatiently waiting to see our ideas come to life.

Today we bought our wedding bands. We have matching bands because it's a tradition here to have the same wedding bands. I also booked our photographer, but I still need to decide which package to take. Talked to the florist, too - we've been discusing prices and I told him what I wanted. I'll have to talk to him once again and go through the details.
And here's the wedding band! I'm really sorry it's so big - I'm still new at this

From tomorrow-it's double digits! :) I made a final agreement with the photographer, and I've talked to my hairdresser once again just to make sure. I'm still thinking what to do for the make-up. I was thinking of doing it myself or having a friend do it (she's amazing when it comes to make-up), but I might still decide to go with a professional artist.
In two days it's Easter here. I've been pretty busy lately so no DIY stuff, but I hope I'll be able to work on some projects next week.

That's what I was thinking, too. I don't really like the choice of make-up and the style of most of the make-up artists here, and that's what made me reconsider. At the moment I think my friend is the best option.

Since there are more seamstresses here then bridal shops I decided to have my dress custom-made. My idea is to have a very simple, elegant dress and dress it up with jewellery. I was thinking of having the upper part of this dress:

And the skirt of this one:

I've been super busy this weekend - Easter with family and friends, catching up with friends that come home for the holidays.... I still need a couple of days to return to normal.
I did a make-up trial (my friend was the make-up artist) but I didn't bring my camera so no photos :( I will do another trial with a professional for May 30, and I hope I won't forget my camera then.
We chose our attendants for the ceremony and they accepted. So far everything's going as planned.

The 3 month mark is here and I'm beginning to feel a bit pressed for time. So far, these are the things I've done:
Reserved reception site
chose attendants
booked caterer (the venue offers catering service)
finalised menu with the caterer
booked florist
booked music for the reception and the ceremony
booked photographer
purchased wedding rings
booked the church for the ceremonyAnd the pretty long list of To-Do stuff:
book videographer
book officiant
take out birth certificates
work on the stationery (DIY invites)
work on the favours (print the boxes and choose candy)
buy wedding shoes
order wedding cake
order bouquet....................................... etc., etc., etc.I hope I can get some of the things done by the end of the following week and check with the seamstress once again to discuss fabrics.

Yay I'm engaged! My FH proposed last night and I'm super excited! I posted the story in a separate thread but thought I would post the update here too, and the e-ring of course :)
He proposed under candle light - candles were lit in every corner of the house leading to the living room and rose petals were scaterred all over. He had written "Will u marry me?" in rose petals on the table and put the engagement ring right next to it. He took the ring, got down on his knee and proposed. I was so excited and lost for words, and so was he. We met on the same day six years ago, but I completely forgot and wasn't expecting a proposal at all.
Here's the ring that I absolutely adore:

I pierced my ears today. For the second time. I had my ears pierced when I was really young but I had alergic reactions to both silver and gold so I never wore earings. Now, I had to pierce them again, because I really wanted to wear earrings for my wedding. I just hope I won't have problems again. And I don't have any problems with rings or necklaces-just earrings.

My FMIL has the same problem, but she said she's just going to suffer through it for the wedding so she can wear the earrings that match her necklace and dress. If nothing else, you can always take them out after the ceremony and pictures, before the reception. That way you wouldn't have them irritating you for as long. Hope it works out!

I would suffer through it, too, but I hope I won't get ugly blisters (it happened in the past) because I'll have my hair up so my ears will be showing. I'll try to get my earrings as soon as possible and wear them for a bit to see how I'll react. Thanks for the advice - I might just take them off after pictures.

After 7 hours on the computer, endless discussion and a bit of frustration, we managed to design our invitations and favour boxes. Actually we still haven't really decided on the invitations since we did three slightly different designs and we'll print them all to see how they will look like and then decide. As for the favour boxes, we decided to create our own bride and groom boxes and put chocolate candy in them. My FH works in a print shop so he'll get me some paper samples and my sister is supposed to buy me some ribbon. I hope they turn out the way I planned. Still need to do the table numbers.
Oh, I forgot.... today is our sixth dating anniversary! And it still feels like yesterday. Time flies! But at the same time I feel like I've known my FH all my life.

Things have been a bit crazy lately and I haven't updated in a while. We are remodeling our house which seems to be an endless story. We were supposed to finish work by the end of May but it's going to last till mid June. In the meantime I managed to buy ribbon for the favor boxes, invitations and all the necessary material for our house decoration.
My birth certificate is here, too, but FH still needs to take his so that we can set a date for the civil ceremony.

Thanks Sandy! The coins, candies and grains are thrown by the mother or close female relative of both the groom and the bride when they leave their houses. When the groom leaves together with his family and friends to the brides house they throw that "mixture" as they are leaving. The same happens at the bride's house when both families and their friends leave for church. And the third time is at church when a female relative of the best man throws the same things during the church ceremony.
Coins symbolize wealth, candies symbolize sweet life and grains symbolize fertility.
As for the family bows, we are using them to decorate each car that's going to be part of the whole wedding. The silver ones are for the cars of my FH's family and the green ones are for my family.

Yes, the favor boxes and invitations are DIY-I'm really proud of them.:)
I like the idea of decorating the chairs with different bows but in our tradition everyone is standing during the ceremony and there are no chairs, so I can't do that. I'm going to use the bows for decorating the cars.

Time flies by and I don't like that either because there are so many things that need to be done. At times I am super excited and nervous, and then I feel like I really want it to be over. That's just normal I guess. Two weeks from now when everything's done and things turn out perfect we'll probably forget all the problems that got in our way.

A wedding day here usually starts around 12 o'clock in the afternoon at the groom's house. The close family members and friends gather at the grooms house and stay there for 1 or 2 hours. While people eat, drink and dance a young girl decorates each car with bows. Before going to the bride's house the best man shaves the groom (we aren't doing that for our wedding) and everyone leaves for the bride's house. When the groom gets into the car a female member of the family throws candies, coins and grains at the car. One member of the family stays at the house and everyone else goes to pick up the bride.
TeacherSonja
07-11-2009, 04:49 PM
When the groom and his family and friends arrive they first dance their way to the front door. The bride's family greets everyone there but the bride stays in her room. After 15-30 minutes the groom together with a young boy (not married) goes to the bride's room to take her. The room is being guarded by male members of the bride's family that bargain with the groom and don't let him in. When they reach an agreement the groom goes in and takes the bride and they both head to the church together with their families. The mother of the bride or any female member of the family throws candies, coins and grains.

The ceremony at the church is performed by a priest and last about 45 minutes. There are no seats and everyone is standing. During the ceremony, the bride and the groom are being crowned, and the best man puts the wedding bands on their hands. They are also given bread and red wine. At one point of the ceremony the bride and groom together with their best man and two other men (I have no idea how to call them in English:bbredface:) move round the central point of the church - that's when the wife or other female relative of the best man throws candies, coins and grains. Then everyone goes to the reception which is always a sit-down dinner. Traditional music is played by a band for all of these events.

Thank you so much for explaining all of that! It's so interesting! I love the tradition of the groom bargaining with the male family members! Is anything physically exchanged or is it just sort of a formality?
Just wondering - why does one member of the family stay at the groom's house? And does that person eventually end up at the church for the ceremony or just miss the whole thing?
And where is the reception held?
It's all so neat! Thanks for sharing!

The bargaining tradition is a formality nowadays but the groom usually gives a small amount of money to show his determination to enter regardless of the obstacles.
Someone stays at the groom's house so that the house is open when the bride arrives and there's someone to welcome her. That person misses the church ceremony. According to tradition the bride should return to the groom's house after the church ceremony and before the reception, and the closest female (mother of the groom or other female members) welcome the bride by giving her bread and something sweet to eat and drink. Then everyone goes to the reception which is held at a local restaurant.
We are not going back to the house for our wedding because it's going to take a lot of time so we are doing the whole welcoming thing after the reception.

Aww, that's kind of sad that she has to miss the ceremony! I think the welcoming thing is really sweet though! Couldn't she come to everything and just get a five minute head start going back to the house? ;)

Well, yes she could, but they usually stay so that they clean up and store the food and drinks that are left (in the bride's and groom's house there is always a lot of food and drinks).

Thank you ladies! :)
As the wedding is getting closer I feel more and more nervous. My dress isn't ready yet but I hope it will be in two or three days. I still need to have my final fitting and hopefully have the dress by Tuesday or Wednesday. I have finished almost everything except for the sitting plan because there are so many people that haven't RSVP-ed yet. Hope they do by the end of the weekend - otherwise I would have to call them.
Ahhhhhh...... 8 more days!!!!!

I haven't updated my journal with my latest projects and all the things I've done so far. Today I finished decorating both my and DH's house and the flag, folded the napkins that we are using at home, wrapped my shoes (the groom brings the shoes to the bride on the day of the wedding), but the most important thing is that I picked up my dress!!!!!! No pics yet because my camera is at DH's place :(
Tomorrow I'm having my pedicure and on Friday - manicure, so these days will be reserved for beautification :)
I'm not nervous yet but definitely will be on the day.

Congrats on being on top of things, and of your wedding being only two days away!!! So exciting.. Can't wait to see pics of all these things you are describing - and the groom bringing shoes to the bride on the day of the wedding sounds so romantic... Like Cinderella and the class slipper.
