Opinions needed ....
Our bathroom is nice but the decor is very ..... 80's. The bathroom is white tile throughout (floor to ceiling) with grey accents.

We don't want to start pulling down tiles but we would like to do away with the smoky mirrors and put a grey stone/faux brick wall up there and get lots of thick n' thirsty blue towels. Our thought is that it would make the bathroom feel more "spa like" without changing out too too much.
We are thinking of a natural brick panelling like this -

or a natural river stone panelling like this -

I had a wild thought to do a trompe l'oeil sky on our bathroom ceiling, around the skylight.

What do you ladies think? Is the sky thing too gitchy?

I don't care for the mirror behind the tub and think the stone idea you had would be nice :)
I am not sure I would personally care for the sky thing ... not sure how you mean "gitchy" (like cutesy?); I guess it would depend on the look you were going for.
Is the sky light over the tub; like would you see it if you were having a bath or something? Otherwise, how often would you see it, painted or not?

The skylight is over the middle of the room. It is right in front and above of the tub and is also in front and above of the toilet, the sink and the shower too :)).
So, yeah you can see it from the tub .... and airplane passengers would be able to see a naked me if they were flying overhead whilst I was bathing
Gitchy = cutesy, silly, oddball
Maybe if we paint out the ceiling blue then we can decide if we want to add the clouds. Either way, I was thinking wispy light clouds ... not cartoony if you kwim.

It's impossible to get a pic of the full bathroom because there is something different on every wall. They painted out the trim and the ceiling this mustard colour (for some reason????)

In my old house when I was married to #2 I did the walls like a tent. (Medieval knights style) of course I don't have the pictures. Wonder if the person who bought it kept it.
It's your room go for it.

Want to help? How hard can it be to paint clouds? *gulp*
If it turns out "right" you shouldn't be able to tell that it's painted. It should look like their is no ceiling at all. :) If it doesn't turn out, it might look like some kid painted it. :snide:

LOL ok but if you were lying in my bathtub would you like to see clouds on the ceiling?

Actually it isn't that hard. Mom painted them in the ceiling of her Louis XIV style ballroom (1/12 scale miniature) she used a small sea sponge and a kind of dry brush technique. At least you won't have naked baby angels running around your ceiling.

Elizabeth,
Is the paneling you posted wood with a laminate over it? If so, I would be cautious of using it in the bathroom right above the tub because those types of paneling tend to be made of particle board and will swell if they get wet. Maybe you could do a pretty faux finish on that wall with a nice waterproof/washable paint? I recently painted a faux leather "wainscotting" in our bedroom using a glaze and plastic bags. I will have to get some pictures of it because it turned out fabulous!
As far as painting clouds - they are not that hard. I did it in my house that is for sale- I first painted the background the blue color, and then using Apple Barrel Paint (50 cent craft paint), water, and an old rag, painted the clouds using a rag roll technique.

There is no panelling .... all 4 walls are tile with the exception of the mirrors behind the tub. The stone or brick panelling we want to use will replace the mirrors on the back wall.
I was thinking of painting the full ceiling with clouds (where there is a mustard colour now) because we have the skylight. The ceiling is gip-rock.

I guess I wasn't too clear with my question. :o Is the stone paneling you want to put up where the mirror is a wood base with the laminate print of the stones on it?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh I dunno .... we haven't bought it yet. :)
I have seen two types of applications - one is a faux, plaster/plastic type of 4 x 8 sheet ... the other is similar to a tile - 12" x 12" which is put on and then grouted. The tile seems to offer more choice of stone/brick.

Okay good! I was afraid with a laminated wood you could have problems. I like the stone tile with the grout! That would look wonderful!!
