So I will be taking my first clomid pill on Wednesday. I've been reading up on the side effects and other people's experiences on another forum and I'm so freaked out right now! Some women have had suicidal tendencies while on this drug! Other side effects reported are hot flashes, nausea and mood swings. And then the period afterwards, if they're not pregnant, is usually the worst one they've ever had with heavy bleeding. OMG! I normally don't have reactions to medication, so I'm hoping for mild hot flashes and a little bitchiness... :bbeek: I don't think I should've did so much research on this...

I'll be hoping for no side effects. I remember every little sound getting on my nerves and being a crying mess. I quit wearing mascara then because it would just run right off. No nausea but hot flashes that I hoped I would never experience again. Wrong, they have come back but now it is because of menopause. I don't know about the heavier cycles because mine have always been off the charts.
Just think you could get pregnant the first time and not experience any of this:o I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I hope you don't experience any side effects. If for some reason you begin to feel completely unlike yourself, or have ANY sort of suicidal thoughts call your doctor and a family member right away. I'm sorry I don't know a lot about Clomid but I wish you all the best!!

I finished my five-day prescription on Sunday. No hot flashes, no moodiness, nothing! I did have a little bit of a headache for two afternoons, but Excedrin took care of them. I feel really lucky that it passed without incident. I was moody last night, and it could have been the meds still in my system. Now we're baby-dancing and playing the waiting game! :)

So, without getting too personal how does Clomid work? I think it stimulates the follicles to release eggs right? Do you start it at a certain time during the month? Are you supposed to have intercourse as often as you can? LoL sorry just curious!

that's my question too! do you like... do the hokie pokie till you're blue in the face? :winktongue: and how long does it take to work and know if you're pregnant? like the time of a regular cycle?

You keep track of your cycle, your period is day 1. Days 5-9 you take the Clomid, and it tricks your body into producing FSH, which is a follicle stimulator. Then you hokie-pokie on days 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18. Day 21 or 22 I have to go to the lab at the doctors office and they will test my progesterone by drawing blood. That's all I know. I've been tracking my temperatures every morning and charting them and so far haven't ovulated. I'm also doing the OPK (ovulation predictor kit) and peeing on the stick every afternoon when I get home from work since day 10. Those also haven't come back positive yet. I'm hoping for a positive OPK by tomorrow, day 14. I've never had a positive one before, and that's why the doctor prescribed the Clomid. There is soooo much information out on the web that my doctor thinks I'm an expert. They all act like I've gone through this before and I haven't. I just like to be well-informed! :) And sharing my knowledge with everyone else!
But everything happens with Clomid like it would on a normal cycle. You ovulate on or around day 14. Here's what I found about progesterone:
During the monthly cycle, if ovulation occurs, the production of progesterone in the body by the ovaries is usually about 15-30 mg a day. And since progesterone production is triggered only by ovulation, that means it should be produced from around day 12 to day 26 for a 28-day cycle (day #1 is the first day of menstrual flow).
If there's a pregnancy, the progesterone levels during pregnancy continue being produced primarily in the ovaries during the first trimester.
By the end of the first trimester, the placenta takes over progesterone production and affects progesterone levels in pregnancy.
So when I go in for my lab work, I should have about 15-30mg of progesterone. If it's too low, they'll probably prescribe something for it.

WOW! Thanks soooo much for all the info. I'll totally be crossing my fingers for a positive OPK :) I REALLY hope you get pregnant soon! May I ask how long you and your hubby were "trying" before being prescribed Clomid? Does Clomid increase your chances of multiples? Sorry for all the questions! (Only answer if you want to)

We've been officially trying since June. I started tracking my cycles in September and was told to track for 3 to 4 months. My doctor said to call in December if there were no positive OPKs and they would schedule some exams. I was prescribed the Clomid on day 10 of my January cycle, so I had to wait until the next cycle to start (February). I really hope this is my month, too! I don't mind the questions, either. I'm just glad someone's showing interest in it, even though you might already be PG!!! :o
I've been using www.MyMonthlyCycles.com (http://www.MyMonthlyCycles.com) to keep track of my information. I like that site because it's free and there's some good information on it.

It's crazy how some women (including like every girlfriend I have) say they don't even know HOW they got pregnant. It's like their husbands look at them and they're suddenly pregnant. I guess I'm just a little "nervous" because I've been off the pill the past 3 years and although we haven't really TRIED, we haven't been careful either. There have been a few months where it's like..."Is my period going to come?" And YES it always does....lol...:(...I'm going to start the OPK and start reeeally getting to know my cycles. It's like, I just want to know FOR SURE that I'm ovulating ya know?

My favorite OPKs are the Target-brand. They're relatively inexpensive and the most-easy to read (for me). If I had more money to blow, I'd get this brand that is digital with these happy faces for positive OPK's. Otherwise the regular kind you have to match-up your line with the test line. I'm sure once I have a positive one I'll really freak out!

7 WOW! So it does increase your chance of multiples or just more likely to get pregnant.

There is an increased risk of multiples. I had a ultrasound when I ovulated. I lost them at about 3 weeks. Because of a tilted uterus

have you tried charting your temperature? There are lots of great websites that have free software for this and give you lots of info. If done right I believe its better (and cheaper) than OPK.

Yes, I've been charting since September. The thing is with charting, your temperature spikes after you've ovulated, whereas the OPK is positive 24-48 hours before you ovulate. I'm covering my bases and doing both.

If you're interested in tracking your temperatures, I downloaded my chart from this site. It's the easiest one I've found so far.http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/bbt/bbtdownload.html#xl5It's not necessary to chart your temps during your period, but if you want to get started you should check it out. I got my basal thermometer at Target for $6. That's the only investment you need to start tracking.

Awesome Thanks! Sorry if this is completely ignorant but is the basal thermometer in the baby aisle? Or do you just get a regular thermometer and designate it to be your basal? (This is alll new to me) ;)

You would think it would be. But at least at CVS it was with the regular fever thermometers. Just so you know BBT only go to 100 degrees so don't depend on it when your sick.

Danielle, are you charting too?? I had no idea it didn't go above 100.I got mine in the regular pharmacy section. It's digital and said "Basal" on the package. It goes to the hundredth degree (this morning I was 97.14). Then you just round up or down to the nearest 10th degree.

Yup, I just stopped the pill about 3 weeks ago. Because I have been on the pill for over 11 years my doctor wants me to wait at least 2 full cycles before TTC. At least this month I can tell I didn't ovulate. Hopefully my body will get back to normal soon. My BBT is digital too. In the instructions is where I read it doesn't go past 100.

So, now that my period is over I'm going to go get a basal thermometer and an ovulation kit! My cycles are usually 28 days to the T, so according to the free ovulation calendar I should be fertile this up-coming week. When should I start taking my temp and using the kit? Again, sorry for the questions I really appreciate it!

According to the book I am reading "taking charge of your fertility" by Toni Weschler, you are suppose to take you temp everyday in the morning before you do anything, even pee. It takes about 5 minutes. Try to do it at the same time everyday, if you sleep in mark that down. You will see a pattern in them temps. You Temp will rise after ovulation. So you are most fertile the day or tow before you see that spike.
Here is a sample BBT chart:

Yep, I would start on day 7 and like Danielle said, take it at the same time everyday.
I got my first positive OPK on day 17, and my temperature spiked on day 18! Yay me! So I definitely ovulated. And we were on top of the baby dancing, too! I hope this is my month.

No questions to ask. They'll tell you what days to take it (either 3-7 or 5-9), what days to have intercourse, what day to get your progesterone tested, that's about it. My first cycle on Clomid was fine, but the second cycle I was a crying-wreck at work. So I didn't take it on my third cycle because I cried all the time! There were also a few dizzy spells (kind of like when you stand up too fast) but they weren't too bad.
Good luck!
