View Full Version : Long Engagement...anyone else?
In my opinion, anything around 1.5 years qualifies. :)
I don't mind having a long engagement; I just thought it would be nice to talk to others in the same boat.
I'm sure time will fly and it's nice to have a lot of time to plan, but sometimes it seems so far away.
Anyone else?

Our "official" engagement will be 1 year 5 months (so just shy of the "long" qualifier) but I started planning before we were officially engaged so it feels like we've been engaged longer. It's now about four months away and it's still coming up on me so fast because there's some stuff you just can't do too far ahead so there's still plenty to do!
Anything in that general time frame counts!
I have a few ideas for cakes, photography, and flowers, but of course it's too early to book any of them. I have started on some DIY projects which helps!

Mine is pretty long too! When we got engaged it was just over 1 year 4 months. It feels long but I know I'll love having the extra time to plan. At least that's what I keep telling myself =D. I'd rather have a longer engagement that to have to wait longer FOR an engagement, if ya know what I mean :)

We've got a long engagement going on . . . we got engaged in early July 2007, and we're getting married in late June of 2009 . . . that's ten days shy of two years!
We deliberately gave ourselves a long time. First, we wanted to be engaged without the stress of planning a wedding (short engagements -- that's all you do, is wedding planning, and after the wedding, suddenly, there you are with nothing in common because the planning is over!) and secondly, we knew we needed time to gather the money together to be able to pay for everything, because we couldn't count on any support from either family since it's a second marriage for both of us.
At the beginning, I thought June of 2009 would *never* get here. Now, I'm starting to think that we haven't got enough time to get everything done!
I am so happy about the fact that by this time NEXT year, I'll finally be his wife!!!!

Fh and I also have a long engagement, 18mths! When we first go engaged, we just enjoyed it for awhile without the thought of "when". But after a couple of months, we sat down and talked about when a good time would be to get married. We decided on the month we first started dating, which is May, but at the time of deciding this it was only June! Then we knew we wanted to wait at least a year, to hvae time to save money etc. , and my sister and her fiance had just gotten engaged that prior November and we're planning their wedding for 2008 so we decided to wait til after their wedding as well so it wouldn't be conflicting schedules etc. and to give OOT guest the time to be able to afford to come back to town. This put us at May of 2009! :) It seems like a long way off but having the advance time to plan and budget makes things go alot smoother n the long run. We were able to do a few things early to at least feel like we were making some head way, instead of feeling like we're sitting around twiddling our thumbs. We went ahead and reserved the venue( a whole year in advance:), we were able to look around and really plan what type of wedding we'd like and enjoy all the planning aspects of it. And catch the holiday sales for some of the different decorations, since we had a whole year of all the holidays before we absolutely had to start making purchases. And now, we're just three months out and aside from last minute stuff everything is done, planned, bought, and at least deposits made if not paid for! Enjoy your long engagement it will be over before you know it!

We had/have a long engagement! We got engaged last February and aren't getting married until August, so about 18 months. I wouldn't have it any other way. I feel like we've been able to enjoy the engagement and plan without getting too stressed out.
Last year, I felt like wow, we have a lot of time left before the wedding. I can't believe we are down to less than 7 months to go!! So, as far as waiting, trust me, it will be here before you know it, but I'm ready planning wise and ready to finally get married after the long engagement!!

Oh it will hit you before you know it. Like when you are sitting there exactly one year before your wedding and then its 11 months, 10 months, etc. etc.!! LOL!

Ours is about 17 months. Purposely so because we are two grad students paying for this thing out of our pockets.

I am all for long engagements :)
DH and I were together just shy of 6 years when we got married. While there was no formal proposal, we talked about getting married for a couple of years or so before we actually did it.

We were engaged on December 28, 2008 and we're getting married June 5, 2010 so we are just below the 18 month mark. It seems like forever away, but I know it's going to go so fast.
Glad to see there are so many others deciding to have a long engagement! We still have 19 months to plan, but it seems longer since we started making before we got engaged.
FutureMrsDM: It's good to hear that all the extra time helped you feel less stressed! I hope it's the same for me!

We'll be engaged for about 22 months total. I thought at first that it would seem quite long (especially considering the fact that we've been together nearly 5 years already just as a couple!), but now after looking into planning options, I couldn't imagine having it be any shorter. Things around here are booked up around 2 years in advance, so we'll just barely squeeze in :o
It's also nice to think that we can reserve the basics and then sit back and enjoy the engagement for a while before things start to get crazy. It's such a great transitional period :)

I got engaged last March. I immediately started gathering ideas and researching vendors. I believe you are smart in waiting to book stuff. I waited to book things also. When I called back in August to start booking my venue and church that I had tentatively chosen I found out the venue had doubled their price, switched managers (and the new manager was not customer friendly), and to boot the pastor I had chosen decided on no longer perform weddings for non-members. So in the same day I lost my officiant, church, and reception venue. I had to start planning all over again! Just recently I had to "fire" one of my bridesmaids that I had chosen last spring. Now I'm overhauling my flowers and dress colors. And these girls on here can tell you I've changed my centerpiece so many times. :bblol: However, I am glad for the long engagement. It gave me the chance to say ok I need to concentrate on this instead of wedding planning. Taking planning breaks has been great!

I think I beat you all! I got engaged July 15, 2004, and am getting married September 4, 2010. The reason it's so long is he proposed the summer before he left for college. We didn't want to get married until we both were finished school, working full time jobs and had saved money to get married, but we wanted to show our commitment to each other. We're both finished school and working full time now, and we're saving to get married.

Our engagement is about 14 months - got engaged June 2008 getting married August 2009, however we have been together since December 2000 so we've been together a long time.
Surprisingly, FH always told people when they asked when we were getting married that marriage as in his vocabulary - at times I knew he was joking but at times I kinda wondered and before the engagement I hadn't done any research or anything because I knew I'd change my mind.
The time will fly - I can't believe how quickly it's going up...I'm starting to feel the stress of it and feel like I need to be doing more but I really can't until March after I write my exam. Working 40hrs a week and studying about another 20 doesn't leave too much time for planning.

Ours is a long engagment as well by the time we actually get married our engagment would be up to 2 years and 4 months. We are also both in college, and have children so saving up money has always been hard. We were going to get married in the summer of 09, but that just wasnt possible so hello summer 2010!

We're having a long engagement as well. We were engaged May 13, 2008 and our date is May 6, 2010.
We had things we wanted to accomplish first (saving for a house/wedding & FH finishing college) so we're perfectly fine with the long engagement. We've been together 7 years so in reality its not that long of a wait.
And...we're down to 1 year and 4 months to go! :)

I'm not in a long engagement, but we are planning our ceremony for a year and a half from now. We are in a somewhat unique situation. We got married on New Year's Eve at the courthouse and he deployed on Jan. 17th. If he hadn't deployed, we probably would've gotten engaged when we did (Thanksgiving) but planned for a wedding this upcoming summer. But, this summer he will still be in Iraq, so we're planning our ceremony for June 2010. One benefit is that it gives me extra time to lose some weight and tone so I can look fabulous for my husband in my wedding gown. And, of course, we can save up money for the wedding. :)

The best thing I ever did was get rid of the ticker that said X months X weeks and X days left. Everytime I looked at that thing I was thinking my wedding was so far away! With the month and day ticker it doesn't seem so far away.

we are having a long engagement we got engaged in september of 2008 and we aren't getting married until october 2010 so just over 2 years. I need to graduate and we want to have time to plan. going to college and working two jobs doesnt give me enough time to plan a wedding. though i have been looking but i don't have anything set in stone. we will be together for 6 years when we get married :) even though i want to do it now i know that it will be worth the wait

We will be engaged a little over 2 years, IF we don't change our mind on the date.
Lately I keep thinking that we may end up eloping or doing a DW just to keep cost down, but I'm not sure yet as I LOVE LOVE LOVE our theme.
We got engaged March 14, 2008 and are getting married June 13, 2009 - so not quite as long as others. We started planning a week after we got engaged. We were at a dinner function at this gorgeous mansion and FH started talking to the catering director about renting the place, and it all branched out from there. We ended up going with a different venue, but that talk with the caterer over drinks got us to pick the date and within two weeks, we had our date, church, and reception venue/caterer.

Same here. I think ours ended up being 20 months, but that's because too much happens in our families in June/July, so we chose August.
