After checking out my local bridal shops and seeing that a piece of tulle with a comb in it is costing upwards of several hundred dollars I've decided to ask a very talented friend make my veil for me.

She picked up the materials to make floor length veil with a blusher and lace edging. She had also bought a comb to attach it to. She came to me yesterday and said she was talking with another woman who said that attaching that size of a veil to just a comb won't work, it will be to heavy. She said the only way to do it would be to attach it to a headband. I had my first "bridezilla" moment here, although I kept it to myself... but I don't want to wear a headband, it wouldnt look right with the hairstyle I want, so I've been trying to find a way to attach this veil to my hair, but I'm not really crafty. There must be some way to make this veil work without a headband or without shortening it.

I've seen some mentions on websites of veils being somehow attached to tiaras with hooks and things, which makes them detachable, which would be awesome, because then I could take the veil off at the reception but leave the tiara on. Anyone have any idea how this looks or how it is done?

Or any other ideas at all?

I don't know about the tiara thing, but maybe you could have two combs to hold it instead of one? Like one on each side of your head could possible work.

As for the tiara thing, maybe ribbon ties or something? I really haven't the slightest idea how they do it, but I've seen veils like it before.

I made my veil from complete scratch and it WAS attached to a comb. Let me dig up some pictures. I think I even have instructions on how I did it....

I hate to disagree with your friend, but a floor or even cathedral-length veil can be attached to a comb with no real problem. Depending on the weight of the lace, you may need a pair of combs, but it still shouldn't be too difficult to hold on. Best example - go to DB or another wedding shop and try on veils in the size you want - you'll get an idea of the weight and "tug" of that type of veil.

A few thoughts:
a) use a wire comb, not a plastic one (they're sturdier)
b) make sure the tulle is firmly attached
c) be aware that the veil will be tugged, and pin it firmly to your hair for even a short time (even gentle hugs tend to jerk your head backwards!)
With most veils (even a very short one), you would want to pin the comb in place with a few bobby pins (make an "X" with two pins on each side of the comb is most secure). This, combined with a quality comb, should be no problem.
d) if your hair is very short or you're wearing it loose, you'll need to try a trick or two to give the veil comb something to hold onto (there are a few websites with guidelines - usually, make a "tiny ponytail" or "tiny bun" that will be invisible when the comb is tucked over it.

Short version - you don't need to put it on a headband, but you might want a wire comb. Go try on veils at a shop for an idea of what you're up against.
