Yippee it snowed today. It started at about 4.30am and by 6am it was snowing heavily with large flakes. Due to the worsening road conditions I was sent home at 8.30am so therefore I only worked 3 and a 1/2 hours today. I got to come home and play in the snow with Keira which was great. She loved the snow (her first time) and we have heaps of fun together.

She is adorable in the snow! I think most puppies love their first snow experience. It is just really weird to hear it snowing in June. I had to stop and realize that your seasons are reversed.

I just saw on the news where New Zealand is getting pounded by snow. It's supposed to get pretty bad there. Good luck Hayz! I personally love the snow but I hate the cold. (possible? Guess so!) I also love getting personal days because of snow.

Have fun and enjoy it! We barely got anything here this winter.

That is awsome! I love the snow as well. But not when its freeeezing cold. But When its nice cold and the flakes are massive and the air is so still. That's my favourite!
Keira looks like she is having a blast! What a great way to spend a snowy day! Have fun!

Wow! I was ignorant to the fact that it snowed in New Zealand. It sure looks pretty. It is around 100 degrees here so it must be nice! We don't get snow like that. In fact it might snow here once every 10 years or so. I've only even seen snow like that one time when we were on vacation! It is so pretty.

It does seem really weird to hear that there is snow in June. lol...but we've had a freak snow storm in August once! It sucked because we were out camping! lol. Like Melissa said, I think we have at least four months until more snow, I think we have snow eight months outta the year! How much does that suck?? A LOT! I hate being cold and I hate LOTS of snow! lol

Anyhow, Hayley, looks like the two of you had a lot of fun!! Take care in driving!! :)

The only kind of freak storms we can expect here in August are hurricanes (shutter).

Are you talking about seeing snow in August? I think you are. In my 23 years of life I've been through 2 hurricanes, and 1 tropical storm that I can really remember.

Yup! There was a tornado a couple times, but I always lucky to be in the right place at the right time. We have a day here that they call Black Friday. Its usually about the Friday the tornado ripped through a trailer park and killed a LOT of people! And then about three or more years back, we had a tornado go through a camp ground, again many people were killed. Freak weather like that is not common for us! :) We are lucky! Stay safe in those hurricanes and tropical storms Kacie and anyone else who has to deal with them! :)

Did you dig yourself and Kiera out from under all the snow yet Hailey? I personally LOVE it when it is cold and snowy but then I get to lie in bed most of those days.

We get tornadoes too! They are usually not to bad around here. Usually small tornodoes come and don't really damage anything. About 10-12 years ago there was a string of tornadoes that came through our area. Lots of people were killed and the subdivision I lived in at the time got torn apart. Luckily the house we lived in did not even get damaged. There was debris in our yard from other homes, but we didn't even loose a tree.

Do you guys get tornadoes in New Zealand, Haley?

Hayz

Tornadoes are very rare here in New Zealand, and they are nothing compared to the ones that the States get. There was one last year I think it was which hit Greymouth on the West Coast and it damaged some houses and shops.

Greymouth Tornado
10 March 2005
Around 1pm on 10th March 2005 a waterspout developed over the sea just west of the mouth of the Grey river. The waterspout made landfall at Blaketown and moved quickly through Greymouth, passing just south of the town centre. The tornado left a trail of damage which can be rated F0 to F2 on the Fujiata scale. An F2 tornado is a significant tornado with winds likely to be between 175km/h and 220km/h. 3 persons received minor injuries. The insurance council say there was $9.2 million in claims for damaged property.
This was the third damaging tornado to affect Greymouth township since 2001and the 7th damaging tornado to affect the West Coast since 2000. Most if not all tornadoes on the South Island West Coast first develop as waterspouts over the sea which make landfall as the Greymouth tornado did. Waterspouts are not that unusual along the West Coast and develop from cumulonimbus clouds which form in unstable westerly airflows.

That looks pretty bad. Here are some pictures from Hurricane Rita. My mom has the pics of my house with half of the roof gone and the damage at her home. I will try to find them to post. It was a pretty weird time. Thank God for generators! The National Guard was here handing out food and water. There was almost no gas. If you found a gas station open you had to wait in line for hours.

I cant imagine what its like to live through something like that, we dont get much really bad weather, a house opposite me had its roof blown off back in 1990 in some freak weather and that was a very unusual type of thing (again everyone panics cos they not used to dealing with weather of any extremes here) ive also had my computer blown by lightening several times but thats cos i lived on top of a hill (i moved) lol

Actually here in South East Texas we get a lot of extreme weather. We don't get hurricanes as often as say Florida does. They say weather works on cycles. The water in the Gulf of Mexico has warmed up and the weather is already warmer this year compared to last. Forecasters are predicting another wild hurricane season. I just hope we don't get another one.

We have some of the most intense lightening storms around. In the summer nights sometimes we even get heat lightening. We also usually get a lot of rain here, but it has been a dry year for us. On average we usually get 46 inches of rain a year.

Probably the worst rain was during Tropical Storm Allison. It rained for days because the storm just sat on top of us. Here are some pics from that.

The above picture is downtown Houston during Allison and the one below is the tunnel downtown. The tunnel has shops and a food court that people visit during their lunch breaks.

Thank goodness my home has never been destroyed and life usually goes on like normal soon after things like this happen.

I cannot imagine living through that year after year. I wouldn't be able to do it. That's why I'm thankful the worst we get is a tornadoe here and there. But then winter is a whole different story for us. Sometimes the snow storms are so bad, you wouldn't even dream of driving to the grocery store! Having a 4x4 doesn't even necessarily help much either!

I'm glad that you manage to stay safe through all these storms!! Keep it up!! :)

It is something you get used to. When you buy property here you have to look at things like if you're in a flood plain or a 100 year flood zone or not. Also if you are in a flood area you have to make sure you have flood insurance. Your home owner's insurance will not cover flood damage unless the roof blows off and that is why the water gets in.

I have lived in 3 houses in this area and they all are not in flood areas. They have never flooded. Also our homes all have hurricane shingles. They do not always work, as you can see, but they are better than regular ones. Homes are buildings are built to withstand more wind.

People who live in flood prone areas like near rivers often have their homes on stilts.

And to think that you guys are only two states over from us, and you have such extreme weather. Some really fierce storms descend upon the Gulf of Mexico, which is probably really close to you.

The Gulf of Mexico is very close to me! I can get to the beach in less than an hour. Not that the beach here is really great. It's really pretty ugly.
