Is this the wedding of the oldest son?
I watched that show a few times and I happened to catch when the oldest son proposed to his girlfriend, which was by far the most awkward proposal I've ever seen...because they don't KISS yet! They're saving themselves for kissing on their wedding day.
It was this weird hug/hand holding thing. Poor kid's homones...!

Yep! That's the wedding we are talking about.
I was actually curious, and did some researching and found them registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond...
They asked for (what I consider) some weird things like candles and candy.

I'm going to watch.
The promos show Dad having "the talk" with his son about the wedding night. There is a clip too of the bride telling her FH not to bite her lips when he kisses her for the first time

I will watch it also. Not sure if the word "fan" is what I would call myself, but I do watch the show quiate a bit. It amazes me how well behaved those kids are, this is the first season where I have seen them be rowdy at all.
In some ways I truly respect them for their values, on the other hand, it ticks me off that they don't see a problem with the mom getting pregnant in her mid forties. With every pregnancy she is more and more at risk of something happening to her or the baby.
Then what do all these kids do?

But I have to know. The girl he is holding hands with in the promos, I thought that she was one of the sisters? Am I getting people confused?

i definitely couldn't imagine marrying someone i've never even kissed.
i just don't get the whole duggar family in general. you know neither of the parents work... they get donations of everything, food and clothes, and their giant house was mostly paid for by Discovery Channel. the only money they make comes from a rental property they have.
if you want to have a thousand kids, thats your prerogative, but at least be able to support them. my mom was one of 12 and her parents both worked their butts off to support them all, no one donated stuff to them.
cynical i know, but a lot of things about that family irk me.

Yeah I know. I could never live by their standards. I think it is funny their cousin Amy who is sometimes on the show makes fun of them. It kind of creeps me out because I think they are just like a small cult. I just like watching them because they are different...and I especially want to see the wedding!

I have to agree wtih a lot of what Kaity said too.
I watch them sometimes - more out of morbid curiosity. I don't understand how they haven't had that rebel kid that runs away from home and starts trying to escape into the real world. I'm not a big advocate of sheltering kids - I think it causes a lot of problems later in life.
As for them not having a job? Showing their family off to the outside world seems to be paying pretty well...teehee...:)

I am sure Jon & Kate & the Roelofs get paid too. As I understand it all of these families were approached to do a special and then once they proved popular, a show. Ummmmm if I was in their shoes, I certainly wouldn't let cameras intrude on my life for free :) Now then .... who wants to watch me go about my daily stuff???
I seem to recall seeing on one show that the older Duggar males in the family do some sort of contract transcription. The mom & some of the girls made dresses to sell in a shop on their property.
LOL they are trashing the wedding get-away car. Hahaha they are shrink wrapping it ... I am so glad my son didn't see this show before my wedding!

As a family project the Duggars built a 7000 sq. ft. home debt free! Both Jim Bob and Michelle are licensed real estate agents. They often host and facilitate the Jim Sammon’s Financial Freedom Seminar (http://www.duggarfamily.com/financialfreedom.html). Jim Bob served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003 and was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2002.

I watched the whole thing... and it kinda creeped me out. The whole not even kissing thing... strange. And the father was kind of mean about the fact that his wife had dated before him, IMO. I hadn't watched the show since they were "15 kids and pregnant again" and even then I thought it was kind of bizarre.
Oh well. To each their own, I guess.

The entire time watching it I couldn't help but to stare at that awkward hand holding. I just kept thinking let her go and kiss her already. They may have gotten it all done in 2 months if they would have used both hands. LOL j/k
I was also shocked about the photos before hand. Maybe they thought waiting for the kiss canceled out the bad luck of seeing the bride before hand. Although when her train was ripped off and the BM forgot the ring they were proven wrong. LOL
Did you all notice that the Bridesmaids threw their bouquets at them as they walked off stage? I've never seen the bridesmaids throw their bouquets at the bride and groom before. Have any of you ever seen that before?
I just finished watching the show and I wasn't too crazy about it. I really felt like it focused too much on their first kiss and the wedding night activities. ;) Kinda annoyed me. However, I do usually watch the show and enjoy it most of the time.

I watched it too and it was a little too "Holy" for my tastes. I thought the dresses were very pretty though. I found it interesting that they were married in a Baptist church too. Are the Duggar's not Mormon?
Did anyone take note of the vows? There was that "transfer of authority" from Anna's Dad to Joshua which was very old fashioned, but the part that really creeped me out was the part about allowing God to decide when and how many children they would be having. I guess that means we will be seeing Anna pregnant very soon!

There were so many moments during the show that raised my eyebrows. The funniest thing that caught my attention was the awkward handholding as well. Did you notice when they were sitting down and holding hands they made sure to keep their interlocked hands held up? Did anyone catch why they probably did that? If they rested their hands on her leg or his leg that would just be too risque and inappropriate! I was wowed by that even.
The "transfer of authority" and all of the comments about "how women are" really irked me. Joshua kept pointing out that women are emotional, but his entire commentary on his bride walking down the aisle was all about how he FELT, and his EMOTIONS. I was actually amused when the siblings were mocking his proposal. They somehow understood how awkward it was and teased their older brother for it. It confuses me, to be honest with you, how they seem to understand that it was extremely awkward. If they know that's not "normal," then why do they not see everything else as abnormal? Do you guys know what I mean?
Anyways...good show...very interesting to watch.
I'm sorry, but I just about laughed when he was singing to her, I thought they were going to break out into a musical or something.

Dani - Oh, absolutely - the singing - hilarious! Somebody said something to the affect of what bride wouldn't want their FH to sing to them - I was sitting there thinking "ME! ME!"
As to the transfer of authority discussion, I too was very unsettled by all that chatter. It made me wonder if my FH felt like he was taking on authority. Then again I haven't spoken to my father since 1996 so I think FH knows that I'd tell him where to stick it if he tried to be the "authority"...haha.
Did anyone else notice that the person who said most of the dribble about the "transfer of authority" was the bride's father?
Of course he was full of little gems - in discussing how there wouldn't be dancing or booze at the reception he said something like: from water to wine, which was actually grape juice, so from water to grape juice.
That one cracked me up. Although not as much as the Saran wrap on the car. That cousin is an instigator - and I love it!
PS - that was the most awkward birds and bees conversation ever.

Ok, earlier when I was out doing other things - I know, I know - I actually leave my computer sometimes...! - but I remembered the other comment I was going to make about the way the Duggar family does things in terms of dating and relationships and stuff...
So they've got 18 kids - one they married off - but 17 to go - how many other families are there out there that actually do things the way they do? The whole no kissing thing, asking the father for a "courtship" but not actually dating without a chaperone or whatever. Do you guys think there are a lot of people out there that live up to these very strict values? I mean, do you think there are 17 other families out there that have kids like the Duggar kids?
I don't know why I started thinking about that...but there you go...I'm throwing it out there!

I saw sometime or read somewhere that some fathers make their daughters do "Purity Balls or Gala's" I don't remember all the details of it but they basically had the same morals--no kissing until married, etc. It pretty much freaked me out that these dads were going around with their daughters at some event and all the daughters were dressed in white. Similar situation I suppose...does anyone else know more what I'm talking about? Haha maybe I was just dreaming that up one time.

I saw the show your talking about. It was TLC one night I believe. That really freaked me out. Some of the things the one father they were interviewing said...IDK, they just didnt' sit right. I can understand in religion wanting your child to stay "pure" until marriage. But that ball and what now and how they were explaining it, was just wierd.

My understanding is that they have ALOT of commercial property that they rent out.
The newlyweds moved into the home they had before they built this new one.
Please don't think less of me for knowing so much about the Duggars.
I actually said out-loud to the brides father to "F" off over the transfer of authority.
My Biggest problem with the no kissing until the wedding ceremony is this: If that is your belief, great, save it for marraige. BUT, how sacred is your first kiss if it is done in front of an entire congregation?

Not sure how I feel about it, but I guess if you have 8 kids to feed and put through college you do what you have to do. It doesn't seem to have any affects on the kids so far.

Here are my thoughts, I don't intend to offend anybody, so I apologize in advance if I do!!
I understand that every family has different religious beliefs and values/morals. However, I just can't help but feel these parents have a few screws loose. Their thoughts on having that many kids is God will choose when its time to stop having kids. I just completely disagree with that. YOU make those decisions. God gave us brains for a reason, use it.
Secondly, those poor kids. They clearly have no friends except each other, or other families who are clones of theirs, but why would you want your kids to be different? Like, I understand wanting your kids to be themselves, but like different different?
Mrs.Goff
01-27-2009, 01:56 PM
One thing that I thought was sad was, when the older girls left to go help with the wedding. The parents had to call in help to care for the younger kids. I believe in teaching your children responsibility but DANG ... it's not your children's jobs to help you raise your younger children!!
These poor kids are never really allowed to be children. They have set jobs from the time they can walk.
Could you imagine being 9 or 10 years old and knowing that you have to wash laundry for 20 people?!?!? And they said that's a everyday job!
I like watching the show because they are so different, but my FH hates when I watch it because I tend to rant about something I see. LOL

I think of the having children thing as cruel to the children they have now. The chances of something happening to the mom each time she gets pregnant goes up significantly. Then what happens to the kids?
I wonder if they live all parts of their life this way? Do they where seatbelts or leave that up to God?
And even if you don't believe in birth control, does that mean you just dive right in and not even try to prevent pregnancy?

I have watched this show quite a few times. I enjoy it.
I guess my views on the show seem a little bit different than most of the posts I have read so far. Although I would never have that many children myself, I dont think there is anything wrong with it. I know they get money for the show, but I think even if they didn't do the show that they would find a way to make things work somehow. Again, I could never do it, but I do admire the newlywed couple for "saving" themselves for marriage. Although usually when I think of saving yourself for marriage it just includes not having sex. But while watching the show I just wanted to yell at my tv.."AT LEAST GIVE HER A HUG". I mean they got in engaged and all they did was look at each other and smile. Seems so weird to me.
They do seem a little cooky to me, but I really dont think they are the only family like this. In one of the episodes they had a family come visit them who had only 1 less child then they did, and were dressed very conservitively too. I would assume they were the same religion. Although I dont think all Baptists are quite the same as the Duggars.
I hope no one is offended by my post, just letting you know my views on this insanely large family :o

I'm more inclined to agree with you than most of the other posts. I say to each their own. As for the chores, when you have 18 kids to do chores, I'm willing to bet that things aren't so bad, you have plenty of people to help. As for them being loaded, they went through their share of tough times. I read their book and I'm AMAZED that they have persevered through everything that happened to them. They deserve the ease that they're getting now. As for the damage it will cause kids being on shows like this, I think as long as they are raised right, they will be well adjusted, cameras or no.

I think they are all crazy. I was raised in a very conservative Baptist church and home, and a lot of the things the Duggars do are things that people did at this church and that my mother still believes. When I was 16 I got a job and asked to work on Sunday mornings so that I wouldn't have to go to church. I haven't been back since. There are "normal" churches, and there are crazy, cult-like churches. This family seems to be under the same spell as many families that I met at my childhood church.
These were my experiences at the church:
Wearing dresses/skirts all the time- It was considered "unmodest" for women to wear pants or shorts, and the church taught that if a man lusted after you because of your clothes that you were sinning. Therefore, nothing that was above the knees, tight, or even remotely revealing was allowed.
Home schooling- Public schools were considered "evil", and almost all of the children were home schooled. I was for first grade and I hated it. My brother and I went to a public school after that, and our parents were looked down upon because if it.
Womens' roles- Women and young girls were expected to take care of the home and serve the men in the family. Most women didn't have a job or an education beyond high school. They felt that it was their sole duty to have children, cook, clean, sew, and teach their children.
Birth Control- I never actually heard an argument against birth control, but it seemed that no one in the church used it. Most families had like 7 kids and having another every year or two. Their theory was that if Baptists had lots of babies, the Baptist population would grow and could educate the whole world about God. The ability to financially support these children didn't seem to be a consideration. I knew a family of 8 who lived in a tiny 3 bedroom mobile home and had no money, yet kept having children.
Dating vs Courting/Abstinance- When I was about 13 I was forced to sit in a Sunday School teen class that talked about courting and abstinance. It was like a 10 week long program. We were told the same things that the Duggar's talk about, like that even kissing before marriage is wrong and means that you are giving away pieces of your heart. My mother tried to convince me to save my first kiss for my wedding day, as well as my virginity. I respect people who save themselves for marriage, but I think that it should be that person's decision, not their parents. And not kissing and having to ask parental permission to hold hands is a little extreme!
Basically, I am like one of those kids who grew up and rebelled against my religion.
Speaking of Jinger, there is a Facebook group called "Free Jinger (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=34483713482)" for people who think that she is going to turn away from the Duggar ways.

Holy moley! I thought I was the only one! I was totally just being funny - who knew there was a whole community?!?
Kirby - I'm glad you are able to conduct your life as you see fit. It's not easy to let our parents down and rebel against the teachings that they think will "save our souls". :)

That is HILARIOUS!!!!
I'm gonna have to check that one out.
I should say that I do respect their choices, I just don't personally believe that they make much sense in some cases.

I don't watch the show and have no care to either. But I know what it is about; the bottom line is that it is on the air because it is different and controversial and gets ratings.
I would really prefer it if we could leave the religious/moral aspect of things out of this discussion here though. We do not want to risk upsetting or offending or turning away anyone that may have similar beliefs.

Thanks for the link.
I don't want to sound mean or anything, but that was the most unromantic proposal ever. However, I'm sure he was nervous as heck because it was being filmed. The whole thing was just so awkward.
I do wish them the best and hope that they have a wonderful life together.

That did seem a little awkward with the whole half hug and all. But I guess between being nervous from the cameras and the way their beliefs are, there wasn't much else to be expected. They did seem happy though, hope it works out for them.

Here's what I don't get...
What exactly is the difference between dating and courting?
I mean, what if you court someone and then realize Oh no! I don't want to marry this person?
I know some people only date one person and end up marrying them, but that can't be the case for everyone. As Jim-Bob said, dating means giving away pieces of your heart...well, what happens if you court someone and you know it's just not meant to be. Are you obligated to marry them, or do you walk away and have a piece of your heart missing?
I hated how he (Jim-Bob) seemed to look down on his wife for having dated other men before marrying him!!

I saw the "17 Children and counting" last night, and it got me thinking about the Very Duggar wedding again... Especially the "whole heart" thing. I mean, I AM giving my FH my whole heart... I didn't just leave "pieces" of it with my exes... its my heart to give and take back at will, so why would I leave any of it with someone that I don't care for? Just a thought.
