View Full Version : Really how much?

How much are people spending on save the dates? I priced it out and I think it would be $70 for 75 invites(and we don't really have a guest list made, so I might need more but no more than 150), that seems a bit expensive considering that I would still need to make invitations and everything else...
Mind you I have to send half of them via mail since his family is from out of state. So this doesn't factor in the postage.

We made save the date postcards. The package of postcard paper we got at Staples for $13. (Makes 120 postcards) We had to buy new print cartridges for our printer too, which was about $40. And then we just designed them ourselves and printed them off at home.
So...$53 for 120. And the ink is nowhere near gone. :D

I spent somewhere around $30 for 80 STD's (not including postage).
I used black cardstock and pink ribbon, a cheap paper cutter, had the actual STD's printed at Staples (which was the most expensive part) and just assembled them at home myself.

Here's my idea inspiration (http://aandodesign.com/) (I think maybe this link takes you to the home page...if it does, click the apple, click wedding/baby, then click the lonely dot sitting in the lower right hand corner). I figured out if I used slightly different papers I could possibly make 120 invites for $80, but that still seems expensive. I would buy 12x12 paper in my colors and cut the circles out myself, thank God someone invented the die cut machine! Print myself, and attach myself.

We just made typical business cards (got good ones from Office Max for $17 -- for 120), added our custom logo (thanks guys!!) and printed them off ourselves.
Then I hand-delivered them to the people that needed to get them, so . . .about $40 for the cards and the ink (which we are STILL using for other things!) alltogether.
Whitewater (I see nothing wrong with hand-delivering STD's, it's not like they're the actual invitation!)

Mine didn't cost a bean.
In the UK We don't do Save The Dates. To us it is doing something twice. :bbeek:
The Invitation is enough. And if they are busy that day then they just missed out on a fantastic Wedding. And We saved more money by not having to feed extra people. A win win situation. :winktongue:

I got my save the date magnets from vistaprint for $39.93 for 200 (waaay more than we needed!). They are the small business card sized ones.
I also mounted them on cardstock. The magnets, cardstock, envelopes, all ended up coming to $51. That doesn't include postage though.
My SIL who works for a printing company told me that she could print the save the date magnets for me at cost and it still ended up costing about $1 per magnet. I think I only ended up paying around 30 some cents a magnet including the cardstock & envelope.

Really? What if you have people that need to travel a distance? Like in our wedding all the groomsmen, and his mother need to come from another state. I want to give them a heads up a early as possible. Of course, they are going to know much more about the wedding than the average guest, but most of his old friends are out of state too.

We just send out the Invitations early. It gives people plenty of time to make plans etc. We had friends fly in from Scotland and Ireland for Our Wedding. And Our October Wedding wasn't even thought about until the end of April when We set the date.
A Gathering is a Gathering be it a Wedding or another event. When We moved house We decided to have a Housewarming Party. We picked a date a month after We moved and sent out Invitations. Friends from Germany, Canada, America and Australia turned up. Along with Local Friends and people from all over the UK. Like those who attended the Wedding. We had a ball. :)
IMO The Invitation has more information than any Save The Date. If people want to attend they will walk through fire to be there. :winktongue:
Or in our case, they walk through passport control

Save the Dates were originally created for destination weddings that cost a LOT of money to go to. That way the guests would have more than enough time to save up the thousands of dollars it costs to go to the destination wedding. Driving from out of state doesn't cost that much. I live from paycheck to paycheck, and I can tell you if you give me a month notice I can fit something like an out of state wedding into my budget usually. I don't see why your guests wouldn't be able to do the same if you send the invitations out 3 months before the wedding. Save the dates aren't the norm. I never even heard of them until I started coming on wedding forums. Also consider how fast word of mouth spreads info. If you are overly concerned about someone not being able to come without super advance notice then give them a call. As pp said save the dates are redundant.

I just bought blank response cards that matched our invites, which we bought at staples. We printed them ourselves. 50 we less them $20.
i got 100 postcards from vistaprint.com for around $40. the price on them is actually much less for 100, but we had added fees because of the picture, monogram and color back. they turned out fabulous and i'm super excited to mail them out next week!
postage on postcards are $0.27 so for 100 of these, total postage = $27.
sorry about the ugly black lines - had to black out our names and location.

I had never heard of them before joining the board but we decided to do them.
We got them through Vistaprint and did the save the date postcards and got 100 for about $10 - only had to pay the shipping.

Yeah... I think I would be the wrong person to answer this question, but I think we spent about $175 on our save the dates and around $200 on our invites. I'm not really computer savy when it comes to designing things and printing them myself (FH and I use laptops and dont even have a printer at home), so I just decided to pay to have them done. I was really really happy with the end result of both though, I guess it just depends on how much work and time you want to put into them.

Our STDs only cost about $5 to make. Actually, they didn't cost anything because I already had cardstock printer paper at home. :o My mom made the design, and I printed them on cardstock paper (the whole pack of 150 sheets was around $5). I only used about 8 sheets of cardstock total. Then I cut out the cards to postcard size. I ended up cutting 120 (enough for 1 for each person) and then realized that I didn't need 1 for each person, only 1 per houshold. :)
We mailed most of them in Christmas cards, and the rest got $.26 stamps. SO, they were VERY cheap! :) We mailed them because our wedding is Memorial Day weekend, and I wanted to give them enough time to plan for it.

Does anyone live near "Christmas Tree Shop"? I live in new york and my FMIL found DIY invitation kits (20 invites per set, envelopes to send, rsvp cards and rsvp envelopes) for $5.99 each. (the same kits were $14.99 elsewhere).
Also, they had wedding themed desp. cameras for $2.79 each. I was thrilled so if it helps anyone else Great :)
