Can anyone point me in the right direction to obtain a passport? Also, does anyone know about what they cost? Thanks.

Go to this website http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
You will find all the info on passports that you need. You can even download the forms.

Brewsells,
I know in AZ they range anywhere from $98-$198 depending on urgency. Also, I didn't know this but I did some research and to travel to Jamaica you do not need a passport (this will change on 01/07). So, depending on where you are going you may not need one.

yeah you do not need a passport going to Mexico/Canada or the Carribean until Jan/07. Then you will need one to go there by air or sea. Then in Jan 08 you will need a passport even driving to Mexico or Canada and Mexicans and Canadians will need one to drive over here too.

I was just looking into that. I thought they had already put that into effect.. So, if we go to Mexico in August I will not need a passport. Just a birth certificate, right?

That is correct!! It doesn't go into effect until next year...save your money for drinks on the beach!! Wooohooo!!

Not to burst your bubble, and I'm sure I'm not since you aren't coming to Canada but I think they already put it into effect for the Canadian border. At least thats what I've heard on the radio and on the news!! :) Just so anyone knows, plus I think its just easier to travel with a passport, its a legal document with your picture, birthdate, etc. The authorities just like passports better. When we went to Hawaii we had to go through customs two or three times, and we NEEDED our passports. Don't know if thats different for Americans but I really wouldn't chance it, JMO though.

Yes, the laws are different in Canada. Who wants to spend hundreds of dollars if you do not have to?
According to the US Department of State:
December 31, 2006 – Passport required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 – Passport required for all land border crossings, as well as air and sea travel.

Oh yeah! I never factored in two people seeing as I was the only person who needed one, Matt already had his from way before. However, with a little bit of budgeting it was not a huge deal! We got my passport three months before the wedding because I wouldn't be able to change my drivers license or any of that until after we got home. No biggie for us...I guess.

If I was going to travel this year, I wouldn't get one. If I plan on doing any traveling years from now, I will worry about getting a passport then. Passports expire in 10 years, and I don't want to get one now unless I have to because I'll have to turn around and pay another $200 for a new one. And besides all of that, I want to keep my $200!

I agree ... when we went to the Caribbean for our honeymoon last year we didn't really need a passport (I believe the law has changed now) but we got one anyway. It was much easier to deal with IMO. Plus they don't expire for like 10 yrs and I don't think it costs much to change your name (like after you're married)

I believe it cost me $12-$20 to change my name in mine! lol. And a hundred bucks for ten years works out to ten bucks a year!! Break it down to that and its not really that bad...lol. We plan on doing a fair amount of traveling though too!

You need a passport to clear customs in any airport or sea port now. Thank you 9-11. You can usually apply for them at your local post office or federal building and sometimes a AAA office. Just call ahead first. I think they cost $98. Also, you can get your pictures done at most post offices now too. I think I paid $15 each for Sean and I's pictures. If not places like Target can get your pictures done. They take between 6-8 weeks to come in. Or, you can pay $50 and have them expedited in 10 days.

You can get through with a birth cert. for now but I can guarantee you it will be a pain in the arse. I would recommend having 2 photo IDs with that certified birth cert just to be safe. I have never travelled without a passport but I know in the post 9-11 hysteria it isn't fun to do. You'll need one eventually, I suggest you get it now. They are good for 10 years and at the end of 2007 you won't be able to even drive into Canada or Mexico without one. (Which is totally ridiculous because you can bounce around the EU - as an EU citizen- without a passport.) They aren't that expensive and they are handy to have. You never know when (after Chrsitmas 2007) you might want to hit Casino Niagra for some blackjackor jump down to Tiajuana on your next trip LA in order to pick up the good tequilla and plentiful prescription drugs.
But you are correct that I misread the dates that you posted. Not sleeping in 2 nights has that effect.

Americans would not have to have a passport to go to Hawaii because it is still the USA. Also just for the some more info. Americans will not have to have a passport to go to Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands so there are still options to traveling to the Carribean after this year without a passport. I have to get one because I leave for Jamaica on December 31, 2006!

I do that all the time! No biggie. It seems kinda weird to me that soon I'll have to have a passport to go to Mexico. Our friend's grandfather owns a ranch like 10 minutes from the Mexican border and we usually spend a few days down there every summer. I will say one more thing about this topic and never speak of it again because it will only look like a daughter sticking up for her mother. My mom has never told anyone they were flat out wrong in their views...she has always just given her opinion and if is contrary to your views then that is her right. Don't we have that right to disagree with each other? She has never been vicious or cruel to anyone she has thought up fun games for us and I think tries to cheer us on and give her support. I am not talking about her opinions, she and everyone else has a right to their own opinions...I have always said that and will always respect other views that are not my own for the simple fact that I could learn from them. I am not so close minded that I think I know it all and shut out the opportunity to learn, your mother has been very nice to me in some situations and extremely helpful ...but on the other hand I have noticed that if someone makes a mistake in a game or incorrectly post some information she is usually one of the first to correct them and at times her "wording" suggests criticism not constructiveness. I was the one who spoke up and I will stand firm on my statement and take the full blow of comments. I like everyone here and this does not mean I don't like Karen or you but that I simply felt a certain way and I HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOICE MY OPINION as well...and since it obviously contrary to your and her view it is still MY right. I didn't attack her, I didn't disrespect her or you and I still value some of her opinions, but for me she seems to be overly corrective in some situations and that is what I posted my comment for.
I sincerly apologize if I hurt your or her feelings but I always speak my mind, and as long as I do it in an educated manner with respect and tact then I never have anything to worry about.
Also...NEVER apologize for defending your mother and don't try and rationalize it either...she is your mother and I would expect no less from you.

Amber,
I travelled a lot in high school and college. I take after my dad in that I enjoy traveling and doing new things but the catch is I hate to fly. I slowed down a lot when I met Sean and we started to live together because he was the only one working while I finished school. That is a real strain on the budget. But now that the wedding is over and paid for I expect that things will pick up a lot for us. Sean and I have different travel styles though. He likes to go and do nothing while I like to go and do everything. It should be fun speeding him and slowing me down. The plan is next year we are going to Ireland and possibly Alaska.
Seriously though, I recommend getting a passport to anyone traveling now. It makes things easier, it isn't htat much money, and it is always good to have a backup form of governement issued photo ID.

When i got my passport in 2003 it cost me about $95.00. It took a couple weeks to get. I opted to go pick it up rather then having it mailed because i didn't want my health card and birth certificate in the mail. I think it is a really good thing to have. We can drive down to the states in an hour. We've never been stopped for it yet. But it just feels like it would be safer to have it. Avoid any trouble when trying to cross.

I belive that if we were all sitting together at a coffee shop talking and this issue was brought up it never would have gone as far as it has. The unfortunet thing about the internet is that you can never hear anyones tone of voice or see their facial expressions and body lanuage.
I'm sorry to see that people have accidently hurt eachothers feelings. I really don't think anyone has ever ment to hurt anyone here. We've all become such good friends and i really hope it can stay that way!

Yes, and Heather, you still have time to get one if you want one. And they do not expire for 10 years. Are you driving or flying to Mexico? If you are driving it is not really even a big deal. I've never even had to show my driver's license when I went into Mexico by car. The Mexican officials just waved us through the check station. The only time we were even talked to by any officials was when we came back to the states and you have to pay a tax to enter into the country again and then a few miles down the road you go through another check station and they ask you if everyone in the vehicle are U.S. citizens.

Yes that would be. After I posted it I really felt a little dumb for asking that. Most of the places that are close enough to drive to in Mexico really aren't that great of places. Some of the border towns are cool for shopping, but now they are pretty dangerous.

Ok, I am completely clueless when it comes to traveling. Any other time I have gone anywhere, it has been by car. We will be flying to Florida for our honeymoon. My question is, what are the requirements for what you need in the form of ID for flying within the US? Would it be smart for me to just go ahead and get a passport? I want to get one someday. I would love to go to Canada at some point. I've heard of so many great places, both from the ladies here, and other places.

Just for flying in the within the states you just need your driver's license. If I were you I wouldn't worry about a passport.

We have to have passports in our country if we board a scheduled flight, even if that is within the UK, i think this was the case even before the 9/11. I suppose we dont even think of the hassle of having one because our country is so small anyways we often go elsewhere in Europe for small breaks etc. Sounds like they are the same sort of costs too as we pay just over 50GBP.
On the subject of flying etc tho i was surpised when we came to the US as i thought that security would have been very tight and IMHO it wasnt, i had been terrified of coming thru there not because of terrorists but because of security yet we hardly seen them compared to other countries/airports we have been to! (dont shout at me it was just my experiences lol)

I can't really compare it to Europe because I'v never been there, but I think the airport security just depends on where you are and when you are there. Right after 911 at the airport in Houston there were army guys out front with big guns. Sometimes now there are a lot of cops and sometimes not.

I haven't flown into the states lately. But when i went to England there was definatly a different feeling in security. It was nice to see. Coming back into Canada it seemed really easy to get through customs. I showed her my passport and i was through.

Lol we got the general inquisition at the US Customs and again when coming back into Canada. It's kinda neat how they have that one room and they call it American soil even though it's in Canada. The whole room has American flags and American pictures on the walls....it's even designed differently (IMO) and it really has an American feel. (That was in the Calgary airport) I Guess it all depends on where you're going, when you're going and when you return.
Just a question, so if an American flies to Mexico, they DO need a Passport, but if they drive they don't?? Weird...but hey...different strokes for different folks!! :)

I remember those rooms. It is kinda weird.
I love the Calgary airport! I love the little scenes they have, the buffalo and such. mmmmmm home. The Toronto airport isn't as much fun. All you get to do is try and peek in the doors to see the luggage carasole.

When was the last time you were at the Calgary airport? They have done a lot of upgrading and renovation!! lol. There is actually a plastic cow upstairs and plastic horses some where else. lol. Oh and I believe there are also plastic cows some place too! lol. What an airport but its very entertaining. I've never been in a more interesting airport in my life!!!! :)

As of right now If an American drives or flies into Mexico we do not need a passport. Starting December 31, 2006 if we fly or go by sea to Mexico we need a passport. But starting December 31, 2007 we have to have one wether we drive or fly. They are doing it by steps.

I know. I had to read up on it to decide wether or not to get a passport for my honeymoon because I got all kinds of conflicting information. That's when I went to the website that I posted earlier to clear it up.

I know that Alaska is a US state, but if you fly to Alaska from the 'mainland' do you need a passport since you are flying/driving in another country??

I doubt you would need a passport to fly from the states to Alaska. I don't know if you made a stop in Canada if you would need one or not. If someone was taking that kind of trip the airline would probably be able to tell you if you needed one or not.
But, like I said, I doubt it because you will not need a passport to go to the U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico, so why would you need one for Alaska?

You only need to show a passport if you are intending on staying in that country. You don't need it to fly over Canada to get to Alaska or anything like that. Also, say you are flying to France and have a layover in the UK. You won't go through customes in the UK so you won't need to show your passport there as long as you don't leave the airport terminal. You will just go to your gate and get on your connecting flight. However, when you arrive at your destination nation you will have to show your passport to get through customs and leave the airport.
