View Full Version : Storing the dress

I just got my dress from the dress shop, and I was wondering if anyone here knows how to store it? They gave it to me in the standard clear bag, and then she had also put it in a white bag underneith because she had thought my fiance was going to pick it up. Is it ok to store it like that until July? Should I do anything different with it, so it doesn't wrinkle or turn funny colors?
I had meant to ask at the shop, but she was in a hurry (and I'm almost 100% certain she miscounted my money and has an extra $20 :irked:). I'm slightly let down when I should be excited, but I think the excitement will come back with my first fitting...

I doubt it will turn colors in a few months, so I don't think you have to worry about that.
I would keep it in the bag to try to keep dust off and keep it from getting stained or anything.
You may still need to get it steamed before the wedding though to get out any wrinkles; not sure how you could avoid that.

I think you should be ok! I have mine hanging in the garment bag precariously hanging on the closet door.
Embarassingly, I have too many clothes that it won't fit IN the closet anywhere!

I bought my dress a year in advance. And they told me to wrap a plain white sheet around it and put it back in the bag and hang it up. It came out fine. Then I went in the week before the wedding and they steamed it.
So you will be fine. But you might also call the store you bought it from and just see what they suggest.

Mine's in a big Rubbermaid tub, away from light and curious cat. That's what I was told to do

I have had mine since may 2007! And I first kept it in a plastic bag for about a yr. Then about a yr ago. I took it out and wrapped it in a white sheet. Just in case it colors on me. My first fitting is Feb 7th. I hope this month goes by fast. I have less than 3 months left. wohoo :cloppy:

i bought my dress back in august and was told to just keep in in the bag (wedding isnt until july) then were just going to steam it (not sure if were doing that professionally or we also have a steamer) my sister and cousin have done the same thing and both their dresses were fine. I wouldnt be too worried about the yellowing just make sure its somewhere out of the way.
And yes i think your excitement will come back, picture yourself in the dress again, talk to someone about the dress heck describe it to us (or if you have pics thats even better)
your getting married! you have the dress! (only a million more decisions to make now)
O and my dress is in a white bag not a clear bag so i would leave it in the white bag to shield it from the light

I bought My Dress about Two Months before the Wedding. I got Married Three Months ago. And gawd knows how long it was hanging up in someone elses house before i bought it. (I got it second hand in a Charity Shop).
It was wrapped in a White Sheet as soon as i got it home. Then Two Weeks before the Wedding i bought a Black Wedding Dress Bag on eBay to put it in. I decided on Black because i had to walk through the Hotel carrying it. And i also work there so i didn't want anyone to see it.
The Dress is now hanging up at home in a Walk-In Wardrobe (Closet) from a hook in the ceiling. I took it out the other day and there's no change to it. Not even a crease. I even have the Netted Underskirt inside the Dress on a Hanger tied from the Dress Hanger with string so it sits where it should be.
So You could say Mine has survived over 6 months. (That's if the previous owner had it for a Month which could be a lot longer)
The trick is to keep it where it wont get knocked or touched.

You're right, my excitement did come back. I've found that just looking at the picture of me in the dress can make me smile no matter how I'm feeling. I posted pictures a couple months ago, when I picked the dress out. If you want to see, they are here: http://forums.onewed.com/showthread.php?t=22293.
