What is the best way to go about getting a seamstress? I am buying my dress from a shop that is closing, so I can't go through that. I guess I could ask them for suggestions. Is it best to just do a search online?
I'll actually probably want to try and find a few 'cause my bridesmaids will need them, too, and I'm not sure if they'll wanna find their own... though then again, two of them are in other weddings that year, so they could bring both dresses.

The seamstress I'm going with is associated with the shop where I got my dress so that isn't much help.
What about asking people you know for their recommendations?

Word of mouth ... ask your friends and coworkers where they bring their clothes for alterations. Or, does your local dry cleaner have someone in house or use someone local?
The store might be closing but their seamstress might still be local and now working independently. It's worth asking.

I agree! I went to a seamstress that my friend and bridesmaid used for her wedding. She was great! Ask your friends, relatives, and co workers.
Perhaps the lady they had as a seamstress does things on the side? I'd ask them.

Somebody was recommended to me by a friend but when I called she seemed quite unfriendly so my gut said don't go with her. I don't need alterations quite yet, but I've just found someone in the phonebook (or local online search I guess) who does bridal alterations and I plan on asking around for some opinions on her.

I also found my seamstress by google searching this area. I found a lady who custom makes formal dresses and her work is great so I know my dress is in good hands. :)
I'd say if you google search, just to call or meet with them to see if you'll feel comfortable with them being in charge of your alterations. And seeing samples of their work too!
