I've had some downtime this week so I've been trying to think of little wedding things to get done, so today I asked FH if he wanted any type of guestbook. He said yes so I decided to look up some alternatives because I want something more than just a roster in a book.
One site suggested having a stack of little cards with envelopes so the guests would be encouraged to write a message, and feel comfortable something more private. Then they drop all the cards in a basket and we open them after the wedding.
I thought it was perfect and THEN! What if these doubled as their placecards! So next to their placecards would be a little envelope and instructions. This way the cards would be at their seats rather than a table they have to go to, and we'd have their name clearly on the card they fill out. Then they could drop the cards off in a box as they leave.
Once we open and read them I figure we can put them in a photo album.
In fact, I think we'll have enough card stock left over from our invitations that I can make them myself!

Nice idea! I've been thinking about alternative ideas too. I'm just not into a book of names.

That sounds like a great idea! Are you planning on punching holes in the pages? Or how are you going to put them in a book? Maybe we'll do this too! :)

Since they will be folded from cards about postcard size I was thinking they could go in a photo album--the kind with the clear sleeves for 4x6 photos.
LOVE the idea! saw a similar idea in a martha stewart wedding planner book and i'm doing the same thing.
one thing i would suggest is, if the colors of the envelope/placecard are in line with your color scheme, you could put a big glass vase somewhere for guests to drop them off. it could be a fun decorative piece too!

I actually thought of this shortly after posting--like a big red vase! Glad we think alike :)
Also, because we already have the cardstock but envelopes would have to be ordered extra, and we'd be tossing them anyway (which doesn't go well with our pride in our green theme), maybe the cards could be tossed in sans envelope, maybe be sealed with a little tab or sticker or something.

I've also seen the well wishes hung on a tree (those twig trees in the planters). Those are really pretty, too! The vase is also a great idea. Good idea to go sans envelope.

I have seen this done where a large box with a slit for depositing the cards was decorated with various leftover decorative elements from the wedding....sort of like way back in the day when each class in my elementary school had a big valentine box that everyone decorated, then deposited their valentines in. I caught the tail end of a wedding show once where they made it look like a stack of hat boxes that was cute. You could also sort of mirror the shape of your cake with a stack of boxes.
