I just found out that my insurance canceled my policy without telling me. The only way I found out is because my premium hadn't come out of my bank account. My payments are set up automatically so they didn't cancel due to no payment. My policy doesn't expire until February, and they canceled me in it looks like November. I haven't gotten any tickets or into any accidents. Can they do this without contacting me at all? They have all of my correct information. I don't understand why they couldn't inform me that they had canceled it. I shouldn't have to go on a wild witch hunt to find out about the cancellation. Now I have to call them to find out why they canceled me. I'm not looking forward to calling them because they have terrible costumer service. :hothead:

No they can't cancel without informing you. Is it just you on it or you and FH? I'd call and even though their customer service sucks I'd tell them that if you had gotten in an accident or gotten a ticket they are responsible for any and all fines that go along with usually not having insurance since they failed to contact you and give you a written notice that they were canceling you like they are required by law. I would then also contact the BBB and file a complaint as well.

I called them. I'm on hold. The wait is currently 45 minutes. UGH! It's only me on the policy. So I'm thinking that my fiance and I should at this point just go with Progressive on a joint insurance account. We'll be paying the same amount as we currently are, were, whatever, but at least I'll have insurance. What's frustrating about that is that Unitrin says that I had two accidents when I only had one. Every time I call to clear it up they say they don't know what I'm talking about. I've already had an insurance agent from another company tell me that I have two at fault accidents on my record for the same month. My driving record is screwed because I went with the cheapest company I could find. Learn from my mistakes and just pay the extra money. It's worth it. Trust me. I didn't think about filing a report with the BBB, but I will definitely do that!

ugh....45 minutes...blah. I would call the DMV and ask about the 2 at faults? And if they only are saying you have 1 then I would get a print out...should cost like 25 and keep it. Or I would research it a little about if there is 2 because you probably only got 1 ticket and the cop might have done something messed up...which could also cancel out that other at fault...

Here's the deal. Three weeks before my debit card for my bank account expired in October they sent me an email asking me to update my information. I updated my information immediately. The company then sent out a letter 20 days after my payment was due in October saying that they were going to cancel me. I immediately called. They said the information hadn't been processed fast enough. It was thier fault so I threw a fit about paying a late fee. They removed the late fee, however, they didn't remove me from the cancellation list. So I was canceled without further notice. Even though this is their fault they want me to back pay them for November, December, and this month so they can show a continuation of coverage. I didn't have insurance during those months. The services were not rendered so I don't think I should have to pay for it. I already don't have continual insurance, because I didn't have a car for a year. I'm already paying the non-continual insurance fee anyway for the next 3 years. I have a call into my fiance's insurance guy to see what he advices I should do. I'm not deciding anything until I hear back from him.
The second accident was a guy and I were both backing out of parking spaces at the mall. I was completely stopped. I felt a bump, and this guy in a little car was staring at me. The cops were called. The cop said he wasn't claiming fault because it was under $5000 worth of damage that occurred in a parking lot. The guy threw a fit like you wouldn't believe saying it was obviously my fault. The officer said there was nothing more he could do. So the fishey stuff begins. The guy refused to file a claim with his insurance company. The guy called me 3 times insisting that I pay him anywhere from $750-$1000 for the dent his car had. I told him I had already filed a claim with my insurance company that there was nothing else I could do. He threatened to sue me. I told him do what you have to do, but I'm a poor college student. I don't have any money. More fishey stuff, my car had no damage. There was no paint transfer on either car. However, this guy had a dent way below where my bumper ends. The dent was huge. It was almost the size of the whole driver's side door! The dent showed signs of weathering, but because the claims adjuster took 3 weeks to come out and take pictures they claimed it was due to the time elapsed since the accident. So the stupid company paid out $1100 to this guy, and he was still trying to scam me into paying him $1000 a month later. The company decided this accident was my fault!!! I was stopped! How is it my fault??? So now I have to call the claims adjustor and see if they can reverse it. I distinctly remember her, because she sarcastically asked me why I was calling to report a claim when there was no damage to my car. I told her because that's what my insurance card says to do incase of an accident. Can't wait to talk to her to her again!

Oh man! I definitely am for you getting joint coverage through Progressive. My insurance went down, they are ALWAYS friendly, even when I've been in at-fault accidents, and I feel like they do what I am paying them to do.
I'm so sorry that you have to put up with all of this and that the company fell for that jerk's insurance scam. Good luck!

I wouldn't pay for the months you didnt have insurance and didn't even know it. It is their fault. I am convinced insurance companies just care about themselves and their money.
DH got in two accidents in Dec 06, one he wrecked his parents Envoy into the guard rail because of ice. He didnt do alot of damage just scraped up the bumper and broke off the licence plate holder (in ohio we have licence in front and back). A friend of his parents wrecked the car a few weeks prior also scraping up the bumper. His parents just now got it fixed in May of 08. After nagging us for the deductible back in 07 because the insurance company said it had to be fixed within a year. The blamed all the damage on DH. Two weeks later in dec 06 he pulled out in front of someone in the rain in his car. Guy didnt want to call the cops, his car wasnt damaged, DH car was close to being totalled. We got his car fixed. So now 2 years later the insurance company decideds to add an accident surcharge to the car in his name, and increase the insurance on the car in my name since we both drive both cars. 2 years later!! They had plently of oppurtunites to do this because we don't even have the same 2 cars we had then. They always want to raise it when you do something but what about when you are a good driver. I had two speeding tickets 7 years ago and that is it. My insurance is almost as high as DH (before surcharge) just because I haven't been with this company long (going on 2 years with them).
Our insruance each month cost more than one of our car payments. Insurance companies are mean (to say it nicely)

Holy crud! I hope you're able to get everything worked out and switch insurance companies and don't look back.

That stinks that you are having to deal with all this; hope you get it worked out soon.
I hate dealing with insurance people; they never seem to offer good service.
