View Full Version : Calories in coffee? Anyone ever think about it?
So how many calories is in a cup of black coffee? Does anyone ever think about the calorie intake when they drink coffee? I've realized that when I use creamer it ups my calorie intake by an extra 150+ calories a day.... not to mention whatever the calories are for black coffee.
I've eliminated creamer from my daily dose of coffee and now use Splenda to sweeten it as much as possible, but I'm still curious how many calories that tacks onto my daily intake.

I was concerned about that as well, but since I've eliminated soda from my daily intake and I only have 1 cup of coffee a day, I'm not too concerned over it.
Also, I'm not going to compromise the taste of my coffe with creamer or splenda, 2% and real sugar for me!
I have no problem using Splenda - I actually prefer it because it melts into my drink whereas sugar usually leaves a glob of crystals in the bottom of my cup. I have at least 16 oz of coffee a day, and sometimes more if I am fighting real hard to stay awake. 32 oz of coffee (which is what I had yesterday) is a LOT when I think about it, but it sure didn't do much to my alertness :urgh:
I think I'd rather have lots of coffee than snack all day long anyway - I'm sure that's fewer calories, but I'm curious how many it adds to my points intake.

There are actually no calories in plain black coffee or in plain tea. The calories (such as in the Starbucks drinks they scare you about) are from the cream, sugar, and anything else.
No kiddin? That's great!!! I knew there wasn't any in tea, but wasn't sure about coffee since it's basically juiced beans :)
Thank you!

Ok so some sites say there are a whopping 2 calories per mug lol. I'm sure you burn that just swallowing it!

You made me LOL. I never considered that swallowing was an exercise  but that's funny!
I think that plain coffee/tea is considered one of those "negative calorie foods" where it takes more energy to digest it than there are actually calories in it.
Has anybody tried stevia as a sweetener versus splenda? It's a much safer alternative. I actually carry around little packets in my purse for any random cups of decaf I might have.

I haven't tried Stevia before... is that the new sweetener that is in the commercials? I should give it a try... Safeway should have it right?

FYI, Doug read a report about Splenda and if you are on some medications it can alter or decrease them, I will have to do a search on it. I know he used it for a while but when he read that he stopped.
Thanks for the heads up I'll have to look into that!

Yeah, we did buy that, but ya know ... it tasted like fake sweetener to me! I was surprised because it's from a plant. So no go for me. I just stick to raw sugar in my coffee and surely burn it off by taking the stairs or something.

Ya know, I'm not sure if I've seen any commercials for it. It's actually sold as a "supplement" so it may be in an odd section of the store. I've never been to a Safeway so I'm not sure if they would have it!

Awe, bummer! I lived off of diet sodas for years (I hate to think what that did to my body) so if something has a fake sweetener taste I guess it doesn't even bother me.

Vons maybe? Ralphs? They're branches of Safeway I think.
I'll see if I can find it next time I go to the store :)

Yup, absolutely true.
I'm shooting for drinking 0% of my calories. While I don't drink sugary sodas, I do like to drink alcohol (which is pure sugar and empty calories); I'm also trying to cut back on caffeine, so I'm subbing non-caffeinated teas for coffee and then water, water, water...

Coffee is a standby at work, though lately I've been trying to switch to tea. I can't stand black coffee, and while I don't mind Splenda I still need creamer, which still has calories. Ugh!
