Since I am going downstairs to start our dinner in a few minutes, I was jsut wondering what everyone else is having tonight?

Personally, I am defrosting the other half of a turkey breast I roasted a couple weeks ago, and making some mashed potatoes and gray and steaming some broccoli.

On nights I work, we usually don't eat anything too exciting. Maybe some mac & cheese. SO tonight I'm working, so nothing exciting tonight...the rest of the week shouldn't be too bad.

I stopped eating red meat years ago and never regretted it. It is easy to do, just don't buy it.

It's not so easy for us. I was raised on Beef because it was cheaper then chicken. If we cut it out I will literally go through withdrawl! lol. It is like it's engrained into a person around these parts. We just know that that is how we support our local Cattle ranchers and keep them in buisness. (Especially after the whole BSE fiasco!! Lol)

As a agricultural student I am very pro beef. I could sit here and state all the positives to red meat, but I will not do that. And besides that I agree Shawna, that I am into supporting our cattle ranchers. But you should eat a variety. And the whole BSE thing is pretty ridiculous to worry about. It is a topic I have heard numerous lectures and read plenty about.

Anyway, tonight we are having something simple (I have to study). I am making cheesy chicken and rice (from the back of the Success Rice box), mac-n-cheese (yes, I know, but I love carbs) and fresh green beans I just picked out of the garden!

I stopped eating red meat for a while but I missed burgers and steaks ;)

Tonight I think we are going to have a nice chicken salad with some left over grilled chicken I made the other day and froze. Last night we had a frozen Pizza and the night before we had Chinese food. I haven't cooked much lately.

I sort of feel like we are in a rut, we seem to eat the same things alot. I need to get some new recipes to try.

that is why I feel like a traitor...i don't want to take away from the cattle ranchers and I think BSE is a load of cow poo!!! lol. But my waist line and fertility are killing me. I need to make a positive change for myself and my sanity! I can't go through another year of infertility!! I believe that my diet is negatively affecting my fertility.

I don't eat meat in general. Occasionally I eat poultry. Mostly though I eat a lot of fish or vegetarian food. (always organic with the meats and dairy though, no growth hormone or anitbiotics for us) I just don't like the taste and texture of beef, pork, lamb, ect. My grandfather raised cattle too. He wouldn't be pleased if he were alive that his grandaughter eats tofu.

Well if you do go with beef and other meats, maybe go with the organics. I do understand the health benefits of needing the iron and other nutrients from the red meat. But maybe just getting rid of all the other stuff like the hormones and antibiotics they use on the livestock in commercail cattle ranching might be of a help. Plus organic farms are usually much smaller and local operations so you could REALLY be helping your very local cattle ranchers.

The biggest problem with red meat eaters is not the fact that we eat red meat, it is the amount of it we eat. Portion sizes today way exceed our protein requirements. Instead of that extra helping of steak people should get an extra helping of leafy green vegetables. It is also good to include fish in the diet at least once a week. Fish is a very good source for omega 3 (especially samon). We also should try to bake instead of fry when we can. Also avoid box food! (Easier said than done, I know).

Yes. I've been looking into organic meats. (organic everything to be honest!) I just have a problem with the prices. Especially because the cost of living where I am is REALLY high!! But if it's for our health I guess we should just bite the bullet really!! lol

Organic beef is good. It is more expensive on both the producer and the consumer. However, it is not only beef that has hormones and other chemicals. Our vegetables sold in the local grocery store are given growth hormones, pesticides, and other chemicals. However you can buy organic vegetables as well. Here again you will pay more.

Also remember beef cattle are not the only livestock given hormones. Chicken, pigs, turkey, they all get them.

OH god!! Boxed food is so much easier! lol. Here I am home alone all day. You'd think I could cook a decent meal sometimes! lol. Well ok, I do but not always! Some days I just don't want to go in the kitchen! lol. We are cutting a lot of things out of our diet! And I have read that half the plate should be vegetables....I've been doing really good with having half my plate veggies and cutting down on the meats. I apprecaite all your ideas Ladies! Some of these things that are being pointed out I never really thought about!! Thank you!

To be honest I don't do all organics all the time. I do ALWAYS do the organic dairy, meat, and fish. But the organic apples versus the regular apples, not that big of a deal. You are going to wash it anyway right? Organic flour versus regular flour, again not a huge deal unless you have allergies or chemical sensativites. I do get organic produce and grocery items sometimes for special things because there is a mild taste difference that I can tell. Most people that I point it out to though think I am crazy. Also there are some things in the organic section that I just like the taste of better. I prefer Blue Sky organic ginger ale to the regular ginger ale on the soft drink aisle. (It isn't as sweet).

If you want to give it a try I would stick to the meats, fish, and dairy along with things that contan the meat fish and dairy (canned chicken stock and frozen meals for example)

You can't wash all of the chemicals off of fruits and vegetables. Many commercial pesticides and hormones given to plants are applied to the soil. It gets in the roots and into the inner part of the plant. The root system is like our circulatory system. Once it's there it goes everywhere.

Price isn't a big deal to me but I understand that it is for a lot of people. Also, I buy all meat and dairy organic. Plus, have you ever shopped at an organic market like Festival or Whole Foods? That is just a far more pleasant experience as opposed to regular supermarkets; polite, friendly shoppers, helpful employees, short lines, and all the free samples a girl could want. :bbmrgreen:

I think we're going shopping tonight. These are things that I will definately keep in mind! Matt's family is big into Organic foods, they used to grow it all when they lived in Germany. My FIL would love to get back into it but its a hard thing to get into in Canada.

I'm telling Matthew we're only getting organic meats from now on!! lol. I'll see how that goes over...seeing as they are expensive!!

Most vegetables and fruits I buy are organic already so I don't have to worry about that too much anyhow.

There is your first mistake. You don't tell him. Do you think Sean (who almost never goes to the grocery store unless I am so sick I am near death) knows what I buy or how much I paid for anything? Of course not. I handle that aspect of our lives. I have no idea what our phone bill is because he handles all the bills. You don't have to share and debate everything.

By the way, are we all bored tonight or what?

We must be bored! Debating food! lol

Well Matthew and I are just about inseperable. Since he is at school all day I like to drag him shopping with me. We have our best conversations in the aisles of the grocery store, besides I need a cart pushing slave don't I?? lol. I really think he won't mind if I buy the organic meats as long as I don't put us in the poor house. (which I think might be a challenge!! lol) So all in all, I think he'll go for just about anythign I suggest....except for maybe liver, but hell, even i woudln't eat that cr@p!!! lol

Well I feel pathetic. We made pizza (again) tonight. There still isn't much in the refrigerator because of moving. Or the cupboards for that matter. I do easy stuff. I"m not a good cook. Steve is a great cook so days that I work late and he has off he normally makes a nice meal. Or we go to his parents who would love it if we eat there EVERY day.

I never take Justin to the store with me!!! He is so cheap and wants to buy all the off brand stuff. Now I know you can buy some of the off brand stuff that is just as good, but not everything. It would be nice for someone to push the heavy cart around though.

Lacey,

I have never shopped at an organic market. I really don't even know where one is around here. At the grocery stores there are some organic foods, but not much. The only reason I know about the price differences and the nutritional aspects is from school.

I used to be like taht with the no name brand, then I met Matthew! lol. The guy won't eat anything that he can't see the name brand on! lol. I can't say I really blame him though, the name brand is DEFINATELY the tastier of the two options!!

I cannot take Sean to the grocery store. The grocery bill doubles if I do. He is like a little kid; if he sees it and it looks remotely good it goes in the cart. Plus he gets bored so he gets jittery and cranky about all the people. (I guess they are supposed to close the store down and kick everyone out when he shows up). Lord forbid that he has to stand in line for more than a minute. It drives me crazy. So I just go after work which is great because everyone else is either still at work or gone home to get their kids from the school bus. So it really is like a little store all for me. Plus the samples hold me over until dinner. :bblol:

Mark and i usually got to the store together. It's some nice time together. Although it does usually mean we have some sort of chip or junk food in the cart.
We haven't been cooking much at home in the last couple months. We've been sooo busy that we usually arn't home for dinner. And then we are so tired when we are we either don't eat dinner, or pick something up.

I made those Friday night. Brian has this aversion to chicken. I might make it every other week or so but from the way he sounds, you would think I make it for every meal. Its gotten to where I say, "youre gonna be mad, but we are having chicken for dinner." He will ask how Im going to make it, I tell him, and he says "Oh...ok then. Thats sounds good" I think his ex only fed him chicken.
He even has my 5 year old saying, "I dont want chicken".

Sadly I think it's a bowl of cereal for breakfast...if I start feeling better soon!! lol

Matt's out flying a helicopter so it's another fend for yourself breakfast. However even if he was here, he hates breakfast foods for some reason!! lol. He's a weird guy sometimes. If I make waffles, he'll eat one and then say he's had enough and move onto lunch foods. I guess in Germany they don't really eat waffles, pancakes, that kind of thing. I think he missed out on some GOOD food!!! lmao

Mmmmm I LOVE breakfast food.
My friend said she was going to get us a waffle iron when she gets back from South Dakota. I'm looking forward to it. But i will have to get my kitchen aid mixer with my gift cards first so i can make the batter.
This morning i had toast with peanut butter for breakfast. Tonight.... we're going to my SIL & BIL's for a BBQ before we go to my neices dance recital.

To answer Brandi's question about spaetzle.... It's yummy! lol

Spaetzle (German: Spätzle, sometimes explained as being derived from Spatz "sparrows") are noodles much used in southern Germany and Alsace. They are fabricated by grating or scraping dough into boiling water and continuously sieving out the batches that are cooked. The dough is a simple affair, consisting of eggs, flour, and salt only.

We serve it with gravy and some times cheese.

Here's a picture, but this doesn't look AS tastey as they usually do!

http://img.timeinc.net/cooking/flavorprofiles/spaetzle_m.jpg

http://tanuki.org.uk/photos/europe/0306ger/braten-spaetzle.jpg

The above looks a little better...but the home made stuff we make is sooooo much better! lol

So basically its just a special pasta and gravy most times.

I love spaetzle!! I used to eat it when I was in Germany! We would go off-base and eat at the German restaurants. I usually ate spaetzle with schnitzel, which is a breaded pork or veal. You put gravy over all of that and you are in heaven! lol

Actually I usually cheat, sorta. I take a can of cream of mushroom soup, a can of sliced mushrooms(drained), packet of onion soup mix, a little milk (to desired consistancy), salt an pepper and VOILA!!!!
FYI - add some cooked sausage, pour over biscuits or toast, serve with eggs and you have a wonderful breakfast!

Kacie_bride

No, I don't smoke. I just really like spicey food. I think it is because I grew up eating it all my life. From the time I was really little I remember going to crawfish boils and loving it. My poor mother had to peel all the crawfish for me! One fun thing about crawfish boils is that the corn and the potatoes all soak up the spices from boiling with the crawfish and they can hot! We also ate a lot of Mexican food. Well, really Tex-Mex. Tex-Mex is different than real Mexican food. It is more spicey. I also ate things like Cajun Pistolettes and other really spicey things. Don't get me wrong, things can get to spicey for me.

For dinner tonight i did a little experimenting. I had a tomato that i needed to use tonight since i am going to be away from home for a couple of nights. It was at its prime.
So i made pasta and then diced up the tomato and put it in the sauce pan with salt and a little bit of margine. cooked that up a bit then added a package or pre-made alfredo sauce mix and some milk. mixed it all up and let it thicken. tossed in a little parmasiaga cheese and served it with the pasta. It was fantastic! I am definatly going to make this again! :bbmrgreen:

I didn't used to like to cook. I did a lot of prepackaged foods and such. But then I started to educate myself on food and take more time with it. As I got better at it (it is a skill like any other) it became more enjoyable. Register for some really nice kitchen stuff so you feel like you are pampering yourself too. That makes it more fun.

1 small onion
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can sliced mushrooms and juice
1/8 to 1/4 C water

Preheat oven 375 degrees

It was bison burgers, potatoes cooked on the bbq and caesar salad for supper for us tonight. We liked the bison burgers and the potatoes are always yummy. (we put them in tin foil with a little butter some garlic salt and seasoning salt and they are sooooooooooooo good!! lol) I'm getting a little sick of caesar salad lately though! lol

What did it for me was watching Food Network every afternoon after work. I figure if those poeple could do it, I certainly was smart enough to figure out how to roast a chicken and jazz up mashed potatoes. Just find a couple chef's that you like and watch their shows. (I'm a Rachel Ray, Giada De Laurentis, Mario Batali, and Bobby Flay girl! I don't really like what Tyler Florence ever makes but he is sure fun to just look at though.)

I love the food network too! Rachel Ray is good but my fav. is Paula's Home Cooking. I love her personality and her southern cooking! What do you think of Paula?

Well we had chicken stuffed with Asparagus and cheese, and spanish rice and caesar salad. Sounds like a weird combo I know, but it was good! lol :)

Your stuffed chicken sounds so good!! (It helps that asparagus is my fav. veg.) Do you have a special recipe for it or is it made w/ just those ingredients?

Last night we had left over pizza.
Tonight i am going to make 'goo slop' i dunno what its actually called. That's just what my mom always called it. Ground beef slow cookedin crock pot with beef base, water, and onions, then an hour before serving ad canned mushroom soup. served over rice or pasta with corn. It's yummy and home feeling.

We actually bought it at a store called Save on Foods. Don't know if you've got them down there. We don't do ANY food shopping at walmart...it kinda skeeves us out, but that's not to say that the food isn't good, we just aren't used to grocery shopping at Wally Mart, we didn't have that until just recently! and that's just us, plus our walmart is really gross here! lol

I never had either until I got the recipe from a Pampered Chef cookbook. Brown one lb of hamburger meat and then add a package of taco seasoning, 2 tablespoons of water, and lots of shreaded cheese. Open up 2 packages of refrigerated crescent rolls and separate into triangles. Make them into a ring on a pizza pan then roll them flat. Scoop the meat over the dough in a circle. Bring points of triangles up over filling and tuck under the dough at the center to form a ring. Then just bake at 375 for 25 minutes or so.

I eat it with sour cream. It's very easy. You can also add fruit filling for something sweet. I'm sure you could add all kinds of different meats. They even have a recipe for an omelet ring. If you know someone that sells Pampered Chef I would defiantely reccommend their cook books. They even have these little $1 cook books and they are great too! The recipes are good for quick meals that taste great.

Okay...first off I wanted to say that taco ring is really good...I thought I was the only one that really made that!!! I have been making it since i was 16!!! Mine is a little different, because I also put refried beans and I top it with lettuce, tomato and salsa after it is done.....but it is soooo yummy and awesome!!!

For dinner we went to The Melting Pot....and it was to die for!!! I mean it was just awesome. It si definitely an experience. It took 2 1/2 hours just to eat, but was well worth it. Every single course was awesome. First we had the spinach and artichoke fondue, which we dipped granny smith apples, different types of bread, and vegetables in, and it was great. Then we each had a salad. Mine was mixed greens, roma tomatoes, gorgonzola cheese, and walnuts, with a rasperry vinagrette...also awesome. For our entree we had lobster, filet mignon, teriyaki sirloin, chicken breast, and black tiger shrimp, with a coque vin fondue and a variety of dipping sauces....yummy!! And then, when I wasn't sure we could eat anymore....dessert came. OMG, it was soooo awesome...I mean, I might say forget a wedding cake and just have this...lol!!! We chose a milk chocolate and crunchy peanut butter fondue!!! With that you get strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, cheesecake, poundcake adn graham craker and oreo covered marshmallows. The oreo covered marshmallows dipped in the chocolate peanut butter fondue has convinced me that anything I have eaten prior to or after this will only be subpar...lol!!! Anyways, it was soooo awesome and well worth the cost. the experience was great, presentation great, and service was phenomenal!!! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has one near them!!! I loved it..and so did Joel!!

Well since my entire townhouse is in boxes I am having one of two things...microwave popcorn or Lipton Rice sides (also microwaveable) I had Ramen Noodles last night but they were really hard to eat with a spoon (I forgot to leave out a fork, hey I could swipe one from work LOL)!

I am salivating over the taco ring...I must try that

Eric really likes my homemade pepperoni rolls...

1 Pkg of dough mix (prepared by instructions)
Roll dough out into 6" squares, sprinkle cheese (I use mozzarella, cheddar mix) into the center, add 5-6 pepperoni's and a little more cheese, fold dough over to one side fold top and bottom in and then fold the other side over (creates pocket).

Brush melted butter/garlic salt over the top (generously) and bake until golden brown

Serve with pizza sauce...quick and easy, not a gourmet meal but filling and tasty!

By the time I got home tonight, I did not feel like cooking so my DH put in a Totino's pizza for both of us!

Perogies are Polish food. It is a little dumpling like creation usually filled with mashed potatoes, cheese, and onions. Then they are sauteed in butter and onions. They can be filled with other stuff but th epotaoes are the key. They even have dessert ones that around here are usually filled with prunes or apricots. They are extremely popular in Pittsbrugh because of the polish population here. In fact if you go to a Pirates game they will have Perogie races during the break. They have about 5 people dressed as "Perogies" who run down the third base line.
