So I was surfing the internet last night ... and stumbled upon a Basset rescue site. Then, I saw Lily. Isn't she sweet?
http://www.gerdysrescue.org/Animals/Lily2.jpg
This lovely Bassethound tri-colour girl is around a year old and is housetrained. A very jolly girl, she is good with children and other friendly dogs. Her owner was unable to keep her as she had many family demands on her time and had no time for Lily.
Lily loves to play, is very affectionate and playful. Bassets need a fenced in area as they will wander following their nose until they are lost otherwise. They have a keen sense of smell and cannot resist a good scent trail!
Spayed, heartworm tested negative, vaccinated including Bordatella, parasite and flea treated just in case, vet checked—ready to go to her forever home!
I emailed the admin to ask about temperament, adoption fees etc. etc. ... a few emails back and forth and now, someone is going to be calling me today to talk Basset  DH had this to say "Oh oh" :)
She reminds me of my Lady (on the left)

AWWWWWW!!! Sounds like you found your Christmas gift! I hope you hear something soon!

I don't know ... and I do ... but but but Lily is so cute! (and besides, she looks very beagle-ish don't cha think?)
Honestly, I just wanted to ask a few questions of this rescue group via email.
We were thinking of getting a dog in the spring (so as to avoid at least one winter of early morning dog walking LOL).
DH's "oh oh" indicated that he knew that this might mean that I might get sucked into getting a dog now. Especially if I hit him up with my big brown "I gotta have it" eyes.

*hehe* Well good luck ;)
I heard Bassets were one of those drooly dogs, so not high on my list :bblol:
Here are a couple of sites with info on them -

Ohhhhhhhh I am going to have to ask about that. I am not a slobbery/drooly dog person either.
My brother has an old english sheep dog that is forever dripping - yeck!

Here is another good site for info - http://www.buckbasset.com/Goodpet.htm
And an excerpt there about the drool -
Do Bassets drool?? Do they shed?? Yes and yes! Many bassets drool. Males tend to drool more than females. Anxiety and excitement can create more drool. It is common place to visit the home of a basset owner and see drool stains on the ceiling! They can sling drool an amazing distance! It is important to note that some bassets are dry-mouthed and there is a huge varying degree of drooling ranges depending on each basset! It is important to keep their coat under their chins dry and clean to avoid yeast infections (as well as smell)! Bassets are short haired dogs, yet they do shed. It is a good idea to groom them regularly with a "hound mitt." This keeps the shedding a little more under control. A good vacuum is also a must!

I know, I was like :bbeek: when I read that :bblol:
Sorry, I don't mean to be discouraging ... every dog has its own little quirks and all; you just gotta find the one that is best for you :)

No no .... it's better not to have any big "surprises" that one might have to live with for the next 10 - 15 years! :)
A friend was just telling me that she wanted to get a rescue dog but she needed to be sure that it fit well with her previous two other dogs. She was concerned about what might happen if it didn't and so, they told her to "try him out" for a while (ie fostering). Hmmmmmmm I wonder if I might be able to take a dog for a test run

I just got off the phone with the woman .... seems it does depend on the dog (and it's jowls) whether it is a drooler or not.
Lily probably isn't much of one (if at all) but this guy most certainly would be. Notice the droopy long jowls (hahahah it's hard NOT to miss them!!!)

They do do "trial runs" in every adoption so that if the dog doesn't "mesh" with the family, it's turned back to the rescue center.
Lily is being spayed this week and then she is to be transferred to another home closer to us. The woman offered to drop by for a visit with Lily on her way to her new home.
 Ok so now all I have to do is to tell DH.

Honestly ... I don't think that pic is of a basset. It looks more like a blood hound to me.

There are quite a few Bassets around here that have the huge, floppy jowls, but they aren't nearly as common as the Bassets like Lily.
Most Bassets I've worked with have been VERY easy-going, friendly, and not-so-drooly. LOL
Good luck!

Both Bassets and Bloodhounds have similar droopy faces .

Bloodhound

But I think there are varied degrees of droop in both ;) I am pretty sure Bloodhounds are always the same color though. Lily doesn't seem to be as droopy; she may even be a mix.

:)
I connected with a lady on FB last night that has three basset rescues and she gave me a wealth of info (I so love the internet!).
It's true ... there are varying degrees of droopiness (both to the eyes and the jowels) :) She says only one of her three drool and this is only when he's about to get fed

Aww what a cute dog! One of my good friends has a 9 year old male Basset named Sags. :) He is quite a lazy boy, lol, and definitely drools a bunch. I love any dog in the hound group, though........but then again I am biased.:chimp:

He asked me when they were coming and wondered out loud where they could be, just one too many times and so I smiled and said .... "Gotcha - you are excited to meet Lily too aren't you. Aren't you? Come on just admit it!" He smiled and laughed and so I have been teasing him ever since.
He's out shoveling snow right now because he is not quite sure what to do with himself while he's waiting LOL

keeping my fingers crossed that Lily is a well behaved young lady who does not drool and that Hugh will take one look into those eyes and fall in love all over again. Good Luck

How cute! And good luck!
I actually just started volunteering as a dog walker for our local beagle rescue. They do fostering too. Safe for me because I think they're cute and deserve attention, but I don't want to own a beagle so I won't be tempted to take one home. Now if it were a lab rescue I'd be in trouble.

Yeah! Dachshund means "badger hound" in German. :) They're scent hounds, which I believe Bassets are as well??
I'm glad you get to meet Lily! Hope she fits in well with your family.
