View Full Version : Anyone have experience getting a passport IN Mexico?
So my sister lives in Texas with her sister and their kids. She decided she would join her brother in Mexico because he had a medical procedure he needed done. She gave him all her savings to get this procedure done, and she left her daughter in Texas with her sister while she was away in Mexico. Needless to say, she tries to come back across the border and her passport is EXPIRED! So my sister is stuck in Mexico, and her 3 year old daughter is in Texas. Mom wanted me to meet my sister in Tijuana to help her come back over (which I have no problem doing), but I don't know what kind of help I can be.
Since she's broke, she can't renew her passport, so we'll have to send her money. But can't she just renew her passport (granted, we send her money), then come through? Is renewing the passport harder over there than it is here (in the US)? She has a current 10 year Visa, but apparently that's different from the passport. If anyone has experience with this, I'm open to ideas. I'd rather not go down there if I'm not going to be of any assistance to her.

Oh wow, sorry to hear that; hope she can work it out soon!
I have no idea what to tell you though.
There was nothing the people that told her it was expired could do to help? Is there some sort of temporary thing she could get to get back home?

Temporary - no. As far as the border patrol or airport, wherever it was she was when she found out, I have no idea. I know it has to be valid in order for her to come back. The quickest way for her to come back is for her to marry her fiancee in Mexico (he's American), but in order for that to happen, I have to go with him to Tijuana. I'm comfortable going there, and my mom is not, so I'm the candidate to accompany if anyone goes down there.
Every time she calls, she gets disconnected, so they haven't had a very lengthly conversation. I told mom to have her fiancee find out if we can just wire her the money and she can apply for a expedited passport like we can here in the US. She's supposed to find out today.
In the meantime, mom might drive to TX to get my niece. UGH I wanna go to TX, not MX! LOL! But it's a wayyyy longer drive to TX.

So why would you have to go with the fiance' to get her?
Hope you guys get something worked out! I would hate to have to go to Mexico!
So why didn't she make sure her passport was up to date; was it a last minute emergancy trip or something? Does she travel there often? I know it doesn't help now, but just thinking I'd want to make sure I didn't get stuck out there.
Good luck to her; and to you if you have to go too!!
Oops! I guess I should have clarified she's Mexican, and she moved to the U.S. after my brother (her baby's father) passed away.
From what I've gathered, it was an emergency trip to Mexico for her brother - medical issues I guess. I'd love to go down there, but I don't want to if I don't have to. If I went down there, I'd miss Matt's birthday, and probably a day of work... that'd be tuff to swallow right now.

My best advice would be to call a passport office or the I.N.S. for information. They should know what to do.

Good idea bout the phone call.... I'll have to do a bit more research and see who to contact (the #) about that.

The INS is now US Citizenship and Imigration Services. They have a website here (http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis)
Or try US Customs and Border Patrol site here (http://www.cbp.gov/)

Oh, well if she is a Mexican resident I would think it shouldn't be that hard to get her passport renewed. But I guess if she is broke that might hinder things; and not sure how long this sort of thing would take.
Matty had some good suggestions; hope you guys get it worked out and you don't have to go out there!

I did a little more homework for you....
Looks like she'll need a new passport, along with her old passport and visa, to get back into the US.
Here is the website to the US Embasy/Consulate is Tijuana (http://tijuana.usconsulate.gov/index.html). It appears she'll have to go there to get a new one or to see what she will have to do to get back to the states.

Wow.... good to know! I'm going to make a phone call once the rest of the world wakes up (it's 5:25am here :bbeek:) and I'm going to find out if they (mom and sister's fiancee) found anything else out. I'll share this with them. Thank you!!!
