Ok ladies, quick question - my mother received the contract for our reception and the venue has a clause in the contract saying that she has to provide additional worker's comp and liability insurance, in addition to the insurance that the hotel already carries.
Insurance for one day? Throwing a party and required to buy insurance?
Has anybody ever heard of this before? She's going to call there today to see what that's about, but I was just wondering if anybody else has run into this kind of wording...

I have heard of this. But couldn't tell you the details. LOL, a bride on Bridezillas had to get this. I think it may vary from state to state. I didn't have to buy any insurance for my wedding, I assume the hotel I got married at had it.

I don't know, I have always figured that the venue you rent should have its own insurance for damages and such. I am sure the venue wants to be protected in case someone in your party trashes something or in case someone gets hurt, but it seems like that should be their responsibility as part of doing business.
I can see them having a non-refundable security deposit or something, but I can't see how they can require you to get insurance. And workers comp insurance for their employees that work your event should definitely not be your responsibility!
I have heard of wedding insurance, but not sure how having that would benefit the venue.
I would definitely call them and get details on all that mess!

I guess it is not all that uncommon, but I still think it should be the venue's responsibility as part of the risks you take in running a business that rents space for private parties :p

That's sort of how I feel - I can understand a deposit or having my mom sign a waiver saying she'd be held liable and that the hotel won't be held responsible for X, Y and Z, but I've never heard of a hotel making a reception host go out and purchase her own insurance. They do have their own insurance too - all the clauses said "in addition to our insurance"...
So strange!
Danielle, I'm glad you posted - knowing somebody else has heard of this makes it a little more normal. Although since you heard about in on Bridezillas I'm officially unsettled! :)

Oh I didn't mean your a bridezilla! I just thought it was funny my only knowledge of the concept I learned from TV. But I didn't want to start my sentence with, "TV has lead me to believe ...."

Yeah, when we were looking into using the Museum of Natural Science as a venue they required additional coverage by the renters. I totally understand that though, I mean dino bones and all! :bbeek: But a hotel doesn't make nearly as much sense to me.

Our ceremony site's contract had that, and we chose to ignore it and not get insurance. No one asked, nothing happened. Obviously you take a risk but it worked out for us.

We should have done this, really. DH and I spent $1,000 in insurance for the day at our venue that we never even needed to use. That royally sucked.

When I went looking at venues, I asked about this and was told that alot of places ask for it, but it really isn't necessary, just a way for them to make more $$$. I would try to call the state about this and see if it is required.

My mom called the venue this morning and spoke to the legal department - apparently her home owner's policy - proof that she has liability insurance - will suffice for these purposes. Phew! I'd hate to have to spend money on some sort of special 1 day policy for the chance that the meat carver slices off his thumb or if one of my drunk friends falls over on the dance floor!

My venue had this in the contract (need for $1 million liability insurance), but I later found out it was only if we were having an excessive amount of people, which we aren't. Glad I asked because if I had only followed what was in writing it would have cost us a couple hundred I believe.

When I booked the band for my reception he told us they carry their own insurance...in case someone trips on a cord or a speaker falls on there head. I honestly have no clue if that type of stuff is required here though, just figured if it is already included then its can't hurt.
