I need your help! This year we are not going to be buying all of the kids in our families individual gifts, but rather one family gift. My youngest brother and his familly LOVE board games and have a family game night each week. They have 4 kids that range in age from 14 to 8. Do any of you have suggestions as to what might be the hot new game this year? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Check out Blokus! Our family loves the classic version - it's easy for kids to learn (our youngest daughter was 7 when we bought it). We saw a bunch of kids playing it at the local elementary school's family game night and wandered over to see what all the excitement was at that table. We've been hooked since!

It's a puzzle-based, strategy game that up to four players can play. It reminds me of Tetris a little. The rules are very simple...

We took it to "couples game night" last Friday for an event with our Sunday school class and the people who played it loved it!

This is not at all new, but one of my family favorites - mexican train or chicken foot dominos. We usually play chicken foot at all our family get togethers with the added rule that everyone has to have a "chicken-domino name" (my grandmother was always the domi-clucker. I was usually nugget.)

One of my recent favorites is Mad Gab. You have to race against the clock and pernounce words that are mixed up to sound like something else. Like, "ASK RUDE ARRIVE HER" which sounds like A Screwdriver. Its fun!

one that i think it great, are the ones that you put on the tv, scene it. the set is a little pricey but each year you can buy new discs for them to update them.. as the kids get older you will always be able to get them something to peak their interest, for example, they have disney, sports triva, hollywood movies, tv shows and then SPECIFIC tv shows like seinfield, friends, etc. we have it and we update every now and then with a new disc

heres the link for all that walmart have available..

My vote goes for Apples to Apples---I've never laughed so hard in my life...its best when you play with a large group of people.

Some friends and I have even made up our own version to include our names, friends, enemies, inside jokes, etc

I'll put in another vote for Apples to Apples.

Another fun one is Loaded Questions. There's a kid-friendly version and a more adult version. Basically, there's a bunch of questions... a person draws on and asks everyone else, then they write down their answers. Another person reads the answers, and the person who drew the question has to guess who had which answer. The number the person gets right is the number of spaces they move. My friends and I had a lot of fun with both versions of the game (family/kid version and adult version).

LOL I was just going to suggest this. My niece (she is 8) asked for this for Christmas this year. :)

I used to like Trivia Pursuit and Monopoly. I don't really play games anymore other than online ones.

We play Apples to Apples with out friends but not with the kids. When we get together with our friends and have a couple of drinks it gets crazy. It is so much fun.

My 11 year-old asked for Sorry Sliders this year. I think we're getting him that. We've been playing Sequence since he was about 7 or 8, too. We also just got into Rummikub (got it at the resale shop for $1.50). Life, Monopoly, Battle Ship, Yahtzee Poker, Simpson's Operation and ESPN Sports Scene-it are all games we like, too. Well, I don't enjoy Sports Scene-it, but he does! :)

Another vote for Apples to Apples, but depending on the ages of the kids, I'd probably recommend Apples to Apples JR. It's a complete different word selection in Jr. and a LOT easier for kids!

OR!!!!

Scene-It? Disney or Nickelodeon

Scene it is SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!! Sierra (my 8 y/o step daughter) LOVES it, as does the rest of the family that's played with us. We have 8 of the Scene It games now, and we have 2 more on our Christmas list :)

I love catchphrase and think it is so fun, but I don't know if it would be too difficult for younger children or not.

Thanks Everyone! I went with Blokus for my brother's family and put Apples to Apples on MY Christmas list because it sounds like alot of fun for adults and we like to entertain and have our friends over to play games. Might be just what we need for New Year's this year!

Taboo. It's nice that you can even play it in the car with the kids to pass time on a car trip.

Haha, looks like everyone loves Apples to Apples! It is such a fun game!

I also enjoyed Battleship, Chutes and Ladders, Candyland, and Uno when I was a kid. :)

Our family has two favorites that we get out at least once a week. Apples to Apples and Pictionary Man. We love party games and entertain a great deal so these two have become our faves.

What is Apples to Apples? I've never heard of it before.

We like Monopoly, Scrabble, Friends Trivia, Friends Scene-it, Family Feud, Price is Right, Deal or No Deal.

The last 4 we have are DVD games and I find them so much fun.

What kind of game is it? I am wondering if we even have it in Canada as I always look at the board games when we go to Walmart and I don't remember seeing that one.

It's a card game. Here's the basic directions:

There are red cards and green cards. Every card has a word with somewhat of a description on it. Every player gets 7 red cards. The "judge" picks up a green card and shows everyone the word. The players have to pick a red card out of their hand that best is described by the green card. However, you have to choose what the judge will feel is the best represented by the green card. It's so much fun, especially when the players ALL have a sense of humor.

It sounds boring in writing... ya gotta play to understand. Here's what it looks like:

I put Blokus on my Christmas list, due to the recommendations here. We got it and I lost to DH the first two times we played. But then we got my parents to play and I actually won 3 times! :) It's a fun game, once you get the hang of it.

My MIL, SIL and her 2 girls 9 and 7, taught me how to play UNO this Xmas, and we played a few rounds, and it was a lot of fun. So I would say Uno could be pretty fun.
I also always liked Cranium and Life. It's pretty fun.

I forgot the game Curses!! XD its sooooo funny!! You end up with curses you have to say/do during every turn or you are out. Like talk like a pirate, or twitch.. Its great to watch someone with 3 or 4 curses trying to to be out! LOL
