...I was trolling online for various wedding 'stuff', and I found this link: http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q188/theweddingmainst/wm-blackred-damask.jpg
It's a card box for the reception. Now, granted, she did a beautiful job making this, but it's $125. Really? I priced it out...for the paper mache boxes (set of 5, mind you), some fabric, ribbon, and a few gems, I can make this thing for $30. :snide: Gah...$125???

Ooh, I JUST made something like this for myself (I'll be posting pictures tomorrow). In all it cost me about $13 (actually $11 for supplies I had to buy, I already had the ribbon and paint). I went to Joanne's and bought three boxes (one big round one, like a hat box - a smaller square one - and a smaller one to go on top that's shaped kinda like a purse with a heart in the middle that you can put a picture in). I painted them with acrylic paint that I already had. I put some ribbon on, and PRESTO!!
Like I said I'll post the pictures tomorrow - hopefully it'll be inspiring! I can't IMAGINE spending $125 for something like that!!!!!

Very good example of wedding price gouging. Anything wedding-related seems double the cost at least!

I found these plastic beads at the craft store in the clearance bin for $.25 a bag and used them to look like snowflakes!

$125 is not unreasonable if she had to spend a lot of time and effort a) figuring out how the heck to make the thing and b) actually making it. Obviously you can do it for cheaper, but you absorb the time and effort cost. Don't expect her to give away her labor for free. :o

Here's what I put together (again, total price is about $12). The last couple of pictures have some "I DO" letters that will go on the cake table - just paint, ribbon and glitter.
Note: The ribbon around the lid of the bottom box looks wierd - it's because it hasn't dried yet (it will dry similar to the ribbon on the middle box)

Considering how much they charge for the card boxes in the store $125 doesn't seem like an unreasonable price. It is more than I would pay but in line with what people charge for this stuffl
Silly question but if you make something like that do you cut the bottom out of the middle box and the top out of the bottom box or do the cards just go in the middle box? I know its random but something that has been bugging me.

The original one is nice. But Your one is better. Because Yours is made with Love and not profit.
Well done. There's a little Cottage Industry there if You think about it. :winktongue:

Good question. I think it all depends on the size of the box and how many Guests are expected. If there's heaps of people meaning heaps of cards. Then the box needs to be big enough the take all the envelopes.
If i was to do something like that. It would be Sods Law that one gets stuck in the upright position and everything else gets jammed in

I wondered about where the cards went too when I first started looking at it, but I noticed that what everyone seemed to be doing was cutting a slot big enough for cards into the top edge of the middle box. That way, everyone can just slip the card in the middle box. I think the way I'm going to do mine is to get paper mache boxes, and cover them with fabric, then use adhesive to stack them, and put ribbon and gems on them. It might take me a while to start the project, but I'll post pictures when I do!

http://i35.tinypic.com/23sztc3.jpgI'm going to attempt to make this in pink and yellow. The cost of buying cardboxes like this one is insane!
