Did I say ick?

We were out walking the dogs this evening as we normally do, Dasie will always find something she wants to carry along our walk.

Tonight we thought she was carrying a leaf as she LOVES to chase them in the wind, we were laughing cause it looked so goofy hanging out of her mouth with the "twig" and all. When we got home, Doug says get Dasie up she was just lying in the front yard watching the neighbors take out garbage with this still in her mouth. Well, I decided to take the "leaf" out of her mouth, granted she had the vulcan death grip on it, I opened her mouth up and grab it bare hands only to find out it was a dead bird!!!!! Ick, I touched that thing with my bare hands!! There is not enough hand sanitizer in the world!!! So, if you heard a scream about 15 minutes ago, that was me realizing what I just touched. I hope Doug picks it up out of the yard, I touched it once and not again! ICK ICK

And wow, she just had the thing in her mouth all that time and didn't try to eat it or anyting?!

OMG!!! This reminds me of something that happened a few weeks ago. We brought my two dogs (dachshunds) to my in-laws and they stayed at the house while we all went out to eat.
We got back to the house, and noticed some blood spattered on a few of the windows in the living room....and there was this HORRID smell coming from somewhere. We had no idea what happened.
So, we're looking around wiping up blood, when DH lifts up some of the cushions on my in-laws couch..........yes, there was a dead bird UNDER the couch cushion with NO HEAD!!!!!!!!
We determined it had come down the chimney and flew into the fireplace, and my dogs (being hunters) ravaged and killed the poor thing.

...Oh dogs...what would we do without them? lol:bbeek:

Gross --- Make sure to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't act weird or anything. You never know what kinds of stuff birds can carry. Yuck!

K so have I told you that you are turning me right away from retrievers? Ewwwwww!!!!

Truth be told, - if my beagle happened upon a dead bird, she would have been more likely to roll around in/on it than pick it up to bring home. :snide:

Yeah, I am just glad I didn't let her bring it in the house even when I just thought it was a leaf twig. bleah. Bloody murder would have been heard for miles.

Do your pups eat poop too ... I heard that was also a retriever thing :)

I saw a few local "young retrievers" on petfinder.com (search site for shelter dogs) and I showed DH. I have even said, let's go to the pound this weekend.

He was tempted but he's sticking to his guns. No dogs (whatever the kind) until spring (at the earliest). His reason - he knows exactly who is going to be walking it, at 6 am when it's -20

Let's jsut say she feasts on rabbit droppings out in the back yard. (And I kiss that mouth!, of course after she eats real food and drinks ALOT of water that is)

Say, Christmas is coming up. Surprise him Christmas morning, he wouldn't turn a puppy away! :winktongue:

I have to get Christmas photos done today with the "girls" so I can order Christmas cards...we have no snow, its gloomy and VERY windy outside! lol

Neither one of us feel like training a puppy or walking a dog in the winter

K so you have totally swayed me away from a retriever and I am a bit worried about having a beagle here without a fenced yard but .... I was talking to a lady who has owned three bassets. She says they are big couch potatoes (like DH and I) .... and they kind of look like a beagle. Hmmmm there is a basset rescue close by ....

A Friend of Mine has one of those.
She had to cut the foot off a Nylon Stocking. Then when "Fred" has His dinner She slips the Stocking over His face to hold His ears back. Then He doesn't get in a mess eating.
It doesn't hurt. Infact He sits by the draw the Stocking is kept in when it's dinner time looking up at it. Patiently waiting for munchies. :)

Gross!! One time I couldn't get one of my dogs (Alex) to come in the house from outside and he had something in his mouth he was shaking around. After finally catching him in the backyard I found it was a freshly dead squirill (sp?) he was sooo happy about his accomplishment, almost as if saying "hey mom I caught breakfast today", YUCK!! he also had a liking for slugs at one time, completely disgusting.

My boss is a huge beagle feind. She actually had to just put down her last one. She had a total of 4!j

A couple of the problems I know she had was that they all had some type of hip displaysia (sp) when they got older, and they had to be on very strict diets because they gained wait incredibly fast. Hers were all overweight. Sweethearts all of them though!
