View Full Version : Can't pick a dress

I can not belive that finding a dress is this hard. As some of you know, my first attempt at buying a dress resulted in buying a really informal dress that I decided I hated and cancelled.
With under 8 months to find a dress, I have been searching diligently. I am liking a lot of the Maggie Sottero dresses. There are 3 that I like quite a bit, but others that I've seen on the web that I would love to try but can't find anywhere.
I can't decide if I really need to keep looking or just make a decision already! Maybbe I'm just afraid to make a bad call again...

You'll get there! I am not one who will see a dress and "know" it is the right one, so I imagine it will be tough.
Keep looking, and you will find it I'm sure.

I guess I'm just starting to stress more about it because some of the shops are making it seem like I have no time left and need to make a decision. I know this is probably more of a sales tactic than anything because some shops seem to think I'm ok. I hate having to make such an important decision under time pressure. :irked:

Granted, the longer you take the less options you will have or you may have to pay more (mostly with the special order thing and alterations) but you should be able to find something.
Do you know what you want; are there things you like about certain dresses? Maybe get some pictures together and talk to someone about what you like and don't like and maybe they can help point you in the right direction.
Or you could look into having a dress custom made; although I would guess you'd need more time for that.

Here are the 3 dresses I have come up with on my exhaustive search. They are all Maggie dresses. They fit so beautifully, I couldn't resist. Anyway, I'd love to hear what everyone thinks. I'm hoping to have this wrapped up this week! All of these I would get in Diamond White. On the second one the picture really doesn't do it justice in Silver Mist because the beading is really hard to see. In Diamond white it stands out more like on #3.

Dress 3 - think this one has a crinoline under it cause it wasn't that full when I tried it on which is a good thing for me.

It is a sales tactic, trust me. I bought my dress nine months before the wedding, and by the time the wedding actually rolled around, I had that stupid thing for so long that it didn't even fit anymore (WAY too big) :irked:. Thankfully, Maggies have corset backs, which make the dress somewhat more forgiving than my zip-back, IMHO.
Of the dresses you posted, I am totally digging Dress 1. It's got a great texture and silhouette, and it's very unique!
At the same time, I really do believe that the right dress picks you more than the other way around, so my suggestion is to keep looking...

I have a Maggie dress. I love her dresses! I actually think the 2nd dress you posted has the nicest shape
I think 8 months is more than enough time! As long as the store has enough time to get it in and alter it that's all you need. I would ask how long it honestly takes to come in and how much time they'd need for fittings. Seems like it all couldn't take longer than 3-4 months.
I got mine 13 months before the wedding, but mine is a sample I found on eBay so I had to go for the deal!

Dress 1 has been with me for quite awhile. I keep coming back to it.
Dress 2 was a total surprise. I feel like I want to try it on again.
Dress 3 Yesterday I was at a shop and the consultant brought me this dress after trying a couple I had chosen. I had a moment I swear I was channeling Marilyn Monroe. (I'm a huge fan.) It was a little scary to me - in a good way.

Wow, all three sound like they make you feel fantastic! Good luck choosing! My vote is now shifting to 3, since you feel like Marilyn in it! That's like every girl's dream, right? :D

#2 and #3 are very chic.
But #1 (I might be typing out of line here, no disrespect) reminded Me of one of My Step-Daughters walking around the house wrapped in a duvet. :bbeek:

Ooh, I really like #1.. they're all gorgeous dresses, but #1 really popped out at me. It also depends on how they look on YOU though.. If you ever get pictures of you in the dresses you should post those :)

I think you should take your time (well some what). You have at least another month. I bought my 2nd dress five and a half months before my wedding and it will be here two months before. Every designer has different ship times. Since you are leaning towards a Maggie, I know this sounds kinda bad but I would ask the lady if you were going to buy that day when your dress would get into the shop. That should give you some idea of how long it will take for a Maggie to ship. I know different months can slow things down a little so it won't be RIGHT on but at least you will have an idea. Keep in mind that in January most dresses stop being made for that whole month because most of them are made in China and that is their New Year. I am happy you are finding some you like but remember how horrible you felt when you bought the wrong one so you don't want to jump and regret it.
Why are you hesitant on the ones you have already looked at? Are they lacking something? It helped me when my FH looked at the bridal magazines and told me what styles he liked and didn't like. The questions I had for months were answered in ten minutes. If he made a comment and said he liked a dress I would ask him what exactly he liked and if he didn't like one I would ask the same question.
I am so excited to find out which one you end up picking but take your time. I wish I did the first time. I felt a lot of pressure to buy, even though it was a year and a half before my wedding, because the ladies kept telling me that if you find a dress you should buy it NOW because it may get discontinued. Oh NO not the dress I want and I can't have it later- is what went through my head. I was watching Say Yes to the Dress and they said two of out of every five brides come back and change their minds and they "re-pick". If they didn't pressure us so much I bet you wouldn't hear about SO many brides buying more than one dress. They pray on our high emotions and the pressure only makes your emotions go more crazy. When we make choices with our emotions and not our heads it isn't always the best thing. I KNOW you will find one you love and you will be able to see yourself coming down to meet your FH in it. I am happy you get another chance to get the dress of your dreams and you didn't get stuck with a big bill like I did when I changed my mind. When you do find your dress, which you will, make sure you take pictures. I am really excited for you!

No offense taken Mitch. I love every opinion. I questioned the look of it too but it really is nice on.

I do remember how awful it was when I bought the 1st dress. I think that's part of my fear - making another mistake. I honestly love all of these and all 3 of them look great on (if I do say so myself:bbcool:) I know that a slimmer A-line style looks best on me because I'm pretty short and have a little extra in the hip/butt department. FH says I'll look beautiful in anything. Only thing he would hate is a giant, poof-ball skirt which I'm not into anyway.

The only one I think I have a shot of getting a picture of myself in is #2 (which seems to be the least favorite.) The other shops with the dresses 1 & 3 won't let you take pictures and there is always someone there with you.

I like #2 also. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE pick ups and looked at the first dress myself but every guy I have heard talk about them says they look funny. I guess that is what made me start having second thoughts about my first dress.

So yesterday after work I went to try on #2 again and didn't love it as much. I tried to take pictures with my cell but they barely turned out and really looked awful cause I had to hold the dress on myself since the consultant unlaced me. I think I'm over that one.
While driving home I was talking to my sister and realized that I'm really leaning towards #1. My main concerns are (no Mitch, not that I'll look like I'm wrapped in my mom's duvet :winktongue:) but that 1. FH won't like it, though he'd never say so and 2.I'm worried it looks slightly prom dressy?
I sent my MOH the 3 pictures. She works in the corporate office for a nice women's clothing company. She posted the pictures on her office door at work yesterday so she could study them each time she went in and out of her office. She texted me last night to say she's in love with dress #1. She also polled everyone at the office and #1 came out on top as well. Today, Dallas Marie is all I can think about. Tomorrow afternoon I have 1 more appointment and unless something blows me away, I think I'll go for #1/Dallas Marie. There. I said it.

OMG! I'm so happy. I just sent FH a bunch of pictures of different styles (none of them the exact dresses I'm considering) Of the 5 he picked that he liked best, 2 of them had pickups and one was so close to Dallas Marie (#1) YEAH!

Yea i know i did say it looked like one of My Girls in a Duvet :winktongue:. But taking another look at it. I must admit it is a nice Dress. The back is stunning. And they always look different on "Real Brides" and not some stick-insect thin model. And totally different again in Diamond White.
Hope You find Your dream Dress.

I'm so excited. I just got back from the bridal shop in MA where I ordered my dress! They didn't have any of the 3 from this thread but I knew I wanted to order my dress there. They are so nice. It's really low pressure there and everyone gets in on it in a really nice way. It was like family without the pressure of family. I showed them dress#1 in theit book and said I was almost decided but that I just wanted to be sure so I didn't make another mistake.I tried on a few others and then one of the girls said, "The way you're taking about that dress, I can tell you really want it." Every other dress I put on I just kept coming back to it. And now that I don't have to worry about whether or not Justin will like it, I'm so happy I picked #1 - Dallas Marie. The End!:)

Thanks Mitch. It's a totally different dress on a "real woman" and in white - beautiful. I remember every little thing about it and it's fantastic. I can't wait to get it!

I'd start thinking about ordering a dress soon. I've heard horror stories of Maggies being rush ordered and still taking 6 months to come in. With such a small time window I'd be checking on the bridal salon to make sure they order your dress.

I agree, the first dress is incredible, I'm actually quite jealous of it!
Ever since my fiance proposed to me with a gorgeous diamond engagement ring I have been wedding dress browsing like crazy, but want to look like a fashion bride rather than a traditional one.
Glad you found your dream dress, soon I hope to find mine!
