Okay, so I've been chosen to do the appetizers this year. I want to do at four or five appetizers and so far all I have are little egg rolls (not traditional, but everybody loves them) and candied cranberries.
Anyone else have any other ideas? We're doing a five hour drive to see my family in Vegas, so it would have to be someting that can withstand the drive...

How about sausage balls?! I would think they would travel ok once cooked; maybe in a cooler.
You basically mix ground sausage and cheese and bake; I think they have like bisquit pieces in there too. My sister made these last year and they were really good. I can try to find the recipe she used if you want.
EDIT: Here is a similar recipe - http://southernfood.about.com/od/appetizerbreads/r/bl51212c.htm But I know she left out the onion and peppers.
There are a few more ideas on that webpage too :)

CornFlake Chicken... It's a staple in our appetizer selection! It's sooooo good!
CORNFLAKE CHICKEN
8 skinned and boned chicken breasts (cut into chicken tenders)
4 c. crushed cornflake crumbs
1 stick butter, melted
Roll chicken in melted butter and then roll in cornflake crumbs. Place in shallow casserole dish (ungreased) and bake for roughly 15-20 minutes.

I'm a sucker for little stuffed mushrooms :) They are pretty easy to make I just take the stems out, put the tops face down in the oven for like 4-5 mins, while they are in chop up the stems up, mix in some breadcrumbs and better and garlic, and then stuff them, and put them back in the oven for a few.
Those little winnies seems to do well around our place too :)
Also have you ever heard of Sausage Rounds or Pepporoni Pinwheels? Yummmm!

This may not be what you are looking for; but in our family we use the KISS method for appitizers; cheese and sausage trays with crackers, veggies platters, etc....
Meatballs in a crockpot are an easy transporter.
Sorry I am not much help, we keep our family traditions to simple stuff.

those are so yummy! This is our breakfast every Christmas morning! That way my mom could get something more substaintal into us besides candy but still leave us ready for Christmas dinner that day:)
I would suggest pinwheels recipe here:

these may not be the exact ones that I made (the one time that I made them) but you could substitute whatever kinda fillings you wanted. we normally use spinach, cheese, cream cheese & I think canned chicken?
I can't rememeber correctly but you get the idea:)

I love Stuffed mushrooms. you can use a variety of stuffing in it but i like to use good ole mushroom stuffing!
They travel well in a container for your trip too!
i also love stuffed baby eggplants, those really travel well too :)
Well, my ideas are similar to some of the other ladies on here! I love stuffed mushrooms and they travel well if kept relatively flat. We stuff ours with a mixture of basil pesto and mozzarella. Then we firmly pack some fresh breadcrumbs that have been processed with oil packed sundried tomatoes and some of the tomato oil on top. Then bake.
Back when we were catering, this was always a big hit - Make about 3 or 4 layers of phyllo dough with Pam butter spray in between in each layer. Cut the layered sheet into squares that are large enough to wrap a meatball. Place a little nest of mozzarella cheese in the center of each square and then place a cooked and cooled meatball covered with sauce on top of each nest of cheese. Wrap up the meatball like a little Christmas gift. The meatball should be thoroughly covered so that no sauce will leak out during baking. Place on baking sheet with the seam side down and spray with a final layer of Pam. Sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper and bake at about 425 until crisp and golden. You can completely assemble and cook these ahead of time and rebake the day of. The phyllo dough will be crisp and buttery and encase a moist saucy meatball and gooey cheese.
The spinach dip recipe from the back of a Knorr veggie seasoning package is a family favorite! Put it in a bread bowl, surround it with a variety of crackers, flatbreads, chips, and veggies and it makes for a nice simple presentation. This one is 100% doable ahead of time.

These are great ladies!! My family just said that they don't really care what appetizers I make, as long as I make them. So I definitely have a good list going. We'll be full on appetizers before the turkey comes. lol:)
