View Full Version : 2008 Holiday Ornament/Trinket Exchange

OK, so I went ahead and set up the new exchange. The sign up deadline is Monday, November 03, 2008. Then we will draw names on Nov 4th.
Then you will have from then until the Monday, December 8th to shop and get your packages sent out. That should be more than enough time; even if your exchange partner is oversees.
Remember to beat the holiday post rush; better early than later or never! You should also add delivery conformation and/or tracking for your package. Maybe even take a picture of it ready to go :)
I have already added everyone qualified that mentioned interest in the other thread (http://forums.onewed.com/showthread.php?t=21324&page=1). So you all should get an invite email from Elfster soon. You will have to accept or decline from that email.
Once you accept that means you will follow through whatever it takes to get your buddy something. If your wedding or some other event will hinder you from doing so, please just bow out for now.
Be sure to fill out your Elfster (http://www.elfster.com) profile with your preferences and address and all. Only members of our exchange group should be able to see your full profile; you can remove it afterwards too.
If you have an account from before, please remove all the stuff from last year. If you can't get into your old account, let me know and I will remove you and add you again so you can create a new account ... or I can be your go between if need be.
If you have not posted yet, but want to participate (*and meet the requirements), you can click here to sign up on Elfster (http://www.elfster.com/apps/exchange/Join.aspx?euid=83491EED-A3AC-41E3-A5DF-D0281D2894DD). Please put your first name as your first name and your screen name as your last name so we can figure out who you are. I will verify who you are and that you meet the *requirements and you will be in :grinhappy:
I am excited and looking forward to this!
*Requirements to participate is members should post regularly and have been here at least 3 months and have at least 300 posts*

Yeah, we are just trying to figure out a way to lessen the chances of someone not following through. So we raised the post count requirement from 100 to 300. Also, anyone who didn't follow through in any other exchange will not be able to participate in any new ones ... regardless of their excuse.

FYI; there were a couple of people removed from the list this time because they didn't follow through in the last exchange. So if your name is missing that is probably why. I don't want to hear anything about it either.

OK, the mods and I have discussed this and decided to give these two ladies another chance to partisipate. However, this is the only other chance; lost in the mail will no longer be an excuse, for anyone. If your buddy doesn't get the package you sent, then get with them and find a way to make it right with them.
We also added that you all should add delivery conformation and/or tracking for your package. Maybe even take a picture of it ready to go.
Your package will need to be mailed out no later than the Monday, December 8th. You all will have more than enough time to shop and get your packages sent out; the earlier the better, especially if your exchange partner is oversees. Better early that late, or never!
Lets have fun with this people; we are all suppose to be friends here, so lets do our best to follow the rules and follow through.
If anyone has anything else to say on this matter they can PM me.

We also added that you all should add delivery conformation and/or tracking for your package. Maybe even take a picture of it ready to go.
For those of us outside the US, it can be more expensive to mail with the tracking option, than to buy the piece itself. If this is the case for you, you can mail it without tracking but please, take a photo of the envelope or package ready to be posted.
Please plan ahead ... if you are outside the US, delivery times vary. Make friends with your local postie and ask them what shipping method would be best, least expensive, or fastest etc. Take note of how long the envelope/parcel might be in the mail, so that you can let your recipient know.
Do not forget to mark any customs forms clearly (do not include the cost of the mailing in the value) - packages can and have been held up in customs.
Shipping tip for everyone - it's not necessarily the weight of the envelope/package that will cost you the most but instead the size of it. If you can safely mail the ornament/trinket in a padded envelope, then it will be less expensive to mail than if you were to put it in a small box. Keep that in mind when you are thinking of buying that beautiful but OH SO FRAGILE ornament for your exchange buddy.

Someone told me once that it makes it easier if you just put that it is a gift. And like you said, put it in the smallest appropriate package.

If it is a gift (and these ornaments/trinkets are) then yes, mark it as a gift but, if you are mailing internationally, you will still have to mark down what the contents are and give a value for customs purposes. The value is the price of the item and not the item + shipping.
FYI - if you are ever mailing something internationally, which is not a gift (ie you are selling the item) and the buyer asks you to mark it as a gift - refuse to do so. What they are doing is asking you to commit fraud so that they do not have to pay duties and taxes and you could be charged. With that said, if the item is sent through the post office (and not by a courier company) and if the item isn't all that expensive, and if the item is going from one residential address to another, the recipient isn't going to be charged any duties or taxes anyhow.

Thanks for reminding everyone on international shipping. I know from being a trucker, that customs is tricky at time and not having things done right can be a big headache. I've heard of drivers having frieght confisicated for not having proper paperwork, wrong markings, wrong, info, etc; or siting for hours waiting on the customs broker to fax the correct papers to them.
If ever in doubt ask the shipping comapany, they'll know what needs to be filled out to ship it across international borders. Better safe then sorry.

Too true. My day job involves sending skid shipments across North America. I have found out the hard way that if I don't cross all the T's and dot all the I's, the shipment does not get to the customer on time (and the driver's don't care for me either )

On ebay, is it just one the ones listed as gifts that you can send directly to another person? 'Cause that's where I found the perfect ornament, but I didn't see if it had that option... though that option kind of scares me, anyway.

What do you mean? I don't know why you couldn't send something bought on eBay direct to your buddy.
I think it was last year or the year before I got my buddy something from eBay and shipped it like that. It would be just like if you bought something for yourself in that you'd research the seller before buying and all.

It just seems like when I was on Ebay a few years ago, they could only ship directly to a gift receiver if they marked it that way. Some sellers have an issue with not shipping it to the buyer 'cause it's harder to know when it was received and get feedback.

If they ship with tracking of some kind, they will know when it's been received but yeah, the buyer might not leave feedback right away, if it's not actually coming to them.
Some vendor's don't like shipping to a third party because they are only covered by paypal, if they don't ship directly to the confirmed address of the buyer. This may only be because they have been burned before. Most will ship to whomever you want though.

Oh yeah, well I guess that makes sense. Maybe just ask the seller if that is ok with them and explain why; can't hurt to ask. I would think an established seller wouldn't have much issue with it, especially with such a low priced item.

Liz,
Your not convinced all my clues are true? Well ask Megan,if they were. When she caught on to my name, threw in a couple that may have mislead her but were true (IE: "I have a wedding planned for June," she started to think it was someone else, but I am an officiant and did marry someone in June. But because I am already married she thought it wasn't me) They are all true, and I swear on the Bible they are. Just cause I say I posted two questions, doesn't mean I only posted two. I could have done more, but then again, maybe I only sent two. After all I am a sneaky SS, but all my clues, they are 150% true, as my eyes aren't blue"
Lady,
Now do you really want to do that? Then how would you all have fun, and who would you girls pick on then? Plus last year I sent Megan her gift direct from a seller on Ebay, so she thought SS was from the South and I live in the North. And if you want my addy now, go to my website it's there. But I will read the Bible to you when you come over, and I may just stutter while doing it.
Twister,
Your not from Mars? Boy shipping on your gift will cost me.

So if you shipped your gift to your Elf, let's say in Florida on a semi, it would'nt get there over night, unless he dropped it at the airport to be flown there.

Just like in football you change your game plan to confuse your opponents. That's the only way to win. You keep playing the same game the other team eventualy does catch on.

I honestly put about 20 hours of online shopping into this gift (I work on the computer)... and didn't have much luck at all! I found ideas and what I wanted to do, but it all cost sooo much! However, I checked one last site before I went to the actual store, and got an "online only" product that I wouldn't have found in the store! I'm soooo excited! I can't wait till my SS gets it! I am dyin to see how it turns out :whoohoo:

I'm just nervous about ordering online, because you don't really know what it looks like in person. I would hate if I ordered it and it was cheesy you know? But it seems to be the best way to go about it. I'll have to look harder online if I don't find something in a store tomorrow.

Yeah, I'd never order anything online without a good picture and description of the item.
I haven't had any problems so far *fingerscrossed*

Got to say I'm sure having fun, get to drive 2 Elfs crazy this year. One is poor Megan, her SS is learning the trade well. And mine still hasn't figured out if I'm up to my old tricks, or have a new game plan yet. Maybe if the two of them joined forces they could figure out who the SS's are.

Adding Candars to my "maybe" list .... love a certain type of dog and I like snowmen but I am not sure I love them.
My elf has been rather quiet lately - whooo hooo Elfie dear - don't you have any more questions for me???

I have an idea of what I want to get my buddy, I just can't find that idea in real life :( I looked today and our local mall doesn't have a big Christmas store, and I don't REALLY like any online, so I might try to go to a different mall this weekend to see if they have a Christmas store.

Awww the same thing happened to me. I had in my head what I wanted to get for my buddy, but couldn't find it anywhere for under $40!! :(

I was thinking about doing that. Kohl's has a lot that are way under $10, and I've seen a few that would work with what my buddy wanted. But I'm kind of hoping I can find something else at another store.

I planned on getting two from the very beginning. I've got one. But so far the second one i've "Lost" on eBay THREE TIMES now! :irked:
The Seller has more coming up but i'm pushing the clock to get it mailed out before Christmas.
To lose an auction once is daft.
To lose it a second time is plain silly.
To be outbid a third time is **** frustrating.

I went to "town" today to go to our craft show just for the purpose of finding my buddy's present...and couldn't get in the place. I drove around and around and around the parking lot looking for a parking place for almost 30 minutes. Finally, I decided there couldn't be anything in there that I needed that badly!!! And I'm talking NO parking spots...even 1/4 mile away. It was amazing.
I did go buy myself some Carhart coveralls that I've been needing for awhile now. I was also supposed to find some binoculars...but ended up getting those in our little town. Weird!

Are you kidding me?! Those are precisely the types of craft shows that are worth going to. Obviously, they are parking that far away for a good reason. Besides, I need you gals to scout out new and exciting ideas for me.
Our show next weekend will be the same way but, we will be there at 6:30 am to set up so, I don't expect any parking issues

I know...but after 30 minutes of driving around an entirely packed parking lot..I gave up!! I was not a happy camper. My husband only thinks it saved him money...I just spent more elsewhere cause I was so irritated!!!:irked:

And I hope the Dehydrated Snow Snow Man Poop [packing peanuts] does'nt melt in the box.
