I was wandering which was less expensive. I would like for my centerpieces at the reception to consist of an arrangement of candles on mirrors.with maybe some petals or greenery. what do you ladies think? is it tacky and cheap looking? or would it be elegant and inexpensive?

Well even if it looks tacky, that's about what I'm doing. ;)

I have found that flowers are ridiculously expensive, although this does depend on what are you live in. I'm on an extremely tight budget, and if FH's grandmother hadn't offered to pay for the flowers, we'd be doing wooden roses (which I'm still really considering). If you do want flowers, the wooden roses are a pretty great alternative. They look amazing and will actually keep, unlike flowers which may wilt and will eventually die.

I am actually doing a mix of all. There will be mirrors on the tables with a candle in the middle with flowers around. Underneath the candle will be rose pedals! I think just candles and pedals with the mirrors will look SOO elegant!!!

I am doing candles, and flower mix as well, mostly glassware centerpiece. I don't think it will look tacky, just have a mock up of your centerpiece beforehand so you can see for yourself.

yeah...flowers are really expensive here too. My reception budget is extra tight too. I told FH we can't have a platinum wedding on a rich bride/poor bride budget.(i guess this wouldn't be funny unless you watch those shows.)(LOL) But, I am now how to count down the pennies. Mostly everything is going to be done by family and friends.I have an aunt that does weddings, so she will do the decor and flowers. The only thing I donot want done by family is the food.

ok. i was thinking if I used different kinds of candles, that it along with the mirrors and petals it would look nice.

We are going to be on a tight budget and I realize to some people $5,000 on flowers is a budget, to others $500 is a budget, to me... $50 is the max...

Thought I would share this about "real" flowers..

*Wal-Mart carries BEAUTIFUL bouquets and sets of flowers for $3.99 every day

*Aldi's carries a dozen roses for $3 every day

*Our local Price Cutter/Ramey's carries a dozen roses for $7.50 and they will preorder any color you want ahead of time

We are going with used silver maple syrup buckets (that are absolutely beautiful) that I got on e-bay ~ they look like silver flower vases ~ $9.99 for 4 (but I think I got a deal when I emailed the lady directly and got 10 for $17 including s/h). They are on ebay constantly, btw. You could get them and spray paint them in whatever color you like best. We will get roses from Aldi's and some gerber daisies & mixed bouquets from Wal-Mart. Total cost per table the "day of" will be about $3 (cuz I already bought the buckets).

I post this cuz some venues don't allow candles and because some people are having "day" weddings when candles don't really "work" ~ which is probably going to be our situation.

oh...ok. You have a great idea! where are you from because we have an aldi's here in birmingham. It's the only one though. But, it doesn't have flowers.

I say go for it!

I did one large, triple-wick candle on a glass charger with scattered rose petals. It was much cheaper than floral arrangements and beautiful!

That sounds nice, too Rosie!! I think a large-triple wick candle would be quite romantic.
