Matt proposed to me January 16th of this year. A week or two later his brother passed away. We recently set our wedding date for his brothers birthday the first time it falls on a Saturday. We chose a wedding theme and we've worked out some of the details, but I'm trying to keep it fairly inexpensive with lots of details. We met when we were still in high school in an online chat room. As it turned out, he went to school with my best friend, 400 miles away from me. I met him the first time in person at a post prom party. We made great friends but I was dating someone. After about a year or two, we started a long distance relationship. I was getting ready to go visit him and decided it was just to hard. I broke up with him and started dating the man who later became my husband. Now, I'm going through a nasty divorce, but he'd been there to hold my hand the whole time. After leaving my husband, we got back together.. Neither of us ever gave up the idea of being together.. Now, eight years later, here we are planning our wedding. He is a HUGE pink floyd fan and I adore Wizard of Oz. We're trying to plan a wedding that incorporates both. The best way we could find to show everyone who WE are was a rainbow wedding.

At this point, we've decided on a cake, not sure on flavor or design. We're going with a cake that has a kind of psychodelic feel due to the nature of our two favorite things. We're having the bridesmades and groomsmen wear different bright basic colors. We're not sure which set will wear which but we're using the hot colors for one and the cool colors for the other. We decided that he's going to play me "our song" on the guitar instead of dancing. More romantic and neither of us like to dance. He is in two bands, one he helped start and one is a pink floyd cover band. He plays the sax in both. We've decided we want both to play for a bit at the wedding. He thinks having me walk down the aisle to "brain damage" would be funny. I'm not so sure about that lol. Maybe a good entrance song for him though. We're talking about having candles at the tables - votives - but we want something "different".. Everything will be in the primary bright colors because of the two major factors we're centering around so I'm not sure of what to do for a dress for my daughter - flowergirl, will be 6 when we get married - or my son - ring bearer, will be 8. We want a beach wedding because we live in Rhode Island. It will be kind of cool so we want at least knee length dresses but nothing too warm for anyone. I don't have a dress yet and we haven't decided on a tux for him. There are still a ton of details not even discussed yet but I want details worked out well and early so we don't have to rush or worry as the date gets closer. In an effort to stay inexpensive, we want to do as much of it as we can ourselves but be able to do a lot of it in advance. HELP!!!

We're actually looking to go bolder and have the rainbow theme a lot more pronounced..

Ok so I'm starting to think about venues and completely lost. I just moved to Rhode Island less than a year ago and don't know much about the area yet. I'm debating a couple different options. I'd love to get married at spring lake or easton beach but the cost ranges are so different its looking more like spring lake. Problem is, I don't know if they'd be willing to block off a section of the beach for us. I know we can rent the reception hall inside though. We don't want the reception on that site though because its a no alcohol venue and that isn't going to work for a champagne toast. I'm trying to think of some of the restaurants they like but I'm leaning heavily toward Wrights Farm. They have the best chicken and its kinda banquet style. They bring everything to the table and its self serve. They have an area I'm pretty sure could be rented out. There is also a place called the Pines that I'm debating. I grew up in the house across the street from it before we moved away when I was younger. Again, pretty sure I could rent it out but the cost is what I'm not sure about :(.. anyone from this area that can help me?!

I'm not from that area but I think the best thing to do would just be to ask, that way you have first hand information and can plan accordingly.

Well, his parents are older - nearly 70, and mine are younger, barely 50. But we're less than a month apart at 26. We're trying to pick a venue that would work for everyone. Being from different time periods I think we all expect different things so I'm wanting to keep it fairly traditional. He is atheist but I'm catholic. I'd like to get married by the catholic church but I really don't see it happening. I may have to find a JP willing to do it. He was raised catholic but didn't confirm. We don't want a church wedding. I've done that once and he's just not interested. Its not who we are. We love outdoors and adventure. I'd love to have something like a pig roast on an open beach but thats not going to happen lol. Another place I'm considering is called the broaster house. His family goes there for fish and chips every friday night but they have an area that is sectioned off so I think it would be easy to rent out. Again they do the family style chicken as well. I just don't know :( We're not inviting a ton of people. Close friends and immediate family. We're trying to keep it around 50. A couple of our choices have bars but I'm not sure what kind of charges would be there. I was considering there simply because we do frequent there and they're great people. I'm also debating that to be the place for the rehearsal dinner. I just don't know. I'm so overwhelmed. He doesn't really help much in the planning. Just tells me whatever I think is best or whatever I want or that kind of useless answer. He doesn't care. He says
"All I know is I want to spend the rest of my life with you. The rest doesn't matter" so I'm stuck lol

Ok, so I started out ahead, way ahead.. and now I can't find a decent checklist and I'm starting to get really worried I'm going to fall behind. I haven't even tried to get anything done with this in months. Its only 2 years away and I haven't even tried to book the venue and the one we want could be hard to get, no idea yet. Can someone give me an idea of where to get a good list from? Thanks.

You're getting married just before me! Yay, someone else with a long engagement!!

I love rainbow weddings, have you seen this one (http://offbeatbride.com/2008/05/christmas-ornament-bouquet-and-paper-centerpieces#referrer), it's one of my faves!

As for countdown checklists, some basic ones are here (http://www.ccweddings.com/ccwed/planner/monthly.html) and here (http://www.weddingguideuk.com/articles/planning/countdown.asp), and you can download a pdf one here (http://www.discoverychannel.co.uk/homeandhealth/article.jsp?section_id=6&theme_id=18&subtheme_id=99&article_id=435&site=uk). They are all for 12 months so I altered mine to 36 months. Otherwise a lot of the ladies on here make their own checklists, so I pull ideas from everywhere and add them to mine!

Good luck with your planning and good on you for starting a journal! I haven't done it yet because it's "too far away" as far as everyone else is concerned :snide:
