I suppose it is about time that I started an after wedding journal. We are still winding down from the wedding getting back to real life.
Unfortunately right after we got back from the honeymoon I hurt my back really really bad. I have been dealing with back issues for the past year and going back and forth to the doctors without any resolution. I had xrays and an MRI last week and found out that I have a herniated disc that is pinching a nerve. I am now waiting for a appointment with a pain management clinic for cortisone injections, and then I will be starting physical therapy. This has put a real damper on married life, since I can hardly do anything. I still have been going to work, since I have an office job that doesn't require much activity, but just that takes my everything, once I get home I am in pain and tired. So sex life has been non existent since we got back (no ones fault except my back). I am hoping to find out today when I can go in for my first appointment.

Also we planned on remodeling our kitchen once we got back. The kitchen cabinets are on order and should be delivered in a couple of weeks. Next weekend Jon and my dad are taking down the old cabinets. I really wish I was well enough to help since I like doing stuff around the house.

I will post once I find out my appointment and take photos on the kitchen process. :)

I'm really sorry that you hurt your back. I can only imagine the pain you are going through. My mom has a herniated disk and the only thing that really helped her was physical therapy. After the therapy, the doctor also suggested moderate exercise to prevent pain in the future (she also has an office job and sitting most of the day is what causes her problems). Anyhow, I hope you'll feel better soon!

Can't wait to see pics of your remodeled kitchen! I'm sure it'll look great!

Thank you for the well wishes! I did finally hear back from the pain clinic. I have an appointment this Friday for the cortisone injections. The only bad part is I can't take any pain medication 48 hours before. So Wednesday and Thursday are going to be really uncomfortable days for me.

You are lucky that this did not happen before your wedding! Hope you feel better!

I'm so sorry you back is in so much pain. My friend had herniated disk in her back and had to have surery. I know the cortizone shots will feel good for the most part, but i'm sure your doctor told you it is only temporty relief of your pain. Has he told you how many you are going to get?? Has he put you on any pain relievers? Because once you have a heriated disk it is pretty much a life long thing you are going to have to live with. :o I hope the cortizone shots help :bbcry:

Thank you for the well wishes. I think their hope with the cortisone injections is once that area is no longer inflamed the disc will go back into place, with the help of physical therapy. I think I will be getting 3 injections over the next three months. They having been giving me vicodin for the pain, however its not something I can take at work. I am also hoping to get off of it very soon since it can become addictive and it has some unpleasant side effects that I am now feeling, like constipation.

Oh, Danielle, I'm so sorry about your back! Thank goodness you will have an appt soon, though. A coworker hurt his knee recently playing basketball with us and had to get cortisone injections, and they really seemed to help.

You need to drink lots of water. Think of your disc as a jelly donut and the herniation is trying to squeeze the jelly out. You will need to drink lots of water since you disk is almost 90% water. I'm hoping that along with the cortisone (which is not good for you, being a steroid) they will also do traction or inversion. Any thing that you can do to take the pressure off the disc will help.
I don't know if you smoke but at least while under treatment you should limit your exposure to nicotine. It dries out your body. Also stay away from caffeine. I know just plain water is not everyone's favorite drink but it is essential to a healthy spine.
These are all the instructions I would give our disc herniation patients at the Chiropractor.

I"m glad to know they put you on some sort of pain medication. I hope the cortisone shots do work for you and that inflammation does go down enough so that the physical therapy can put your disk back in place. I will have to ask my dh how that works since he is a pt...hmm.. I'll get back to you on that one and let ya know what he said:D

I asked him what the physical therapy would be....he told me that the shots probably wouldn't do much to help. But you would do alot of what he called extention ( bending backwards) to try to put the disk back in place.since an average person does alot of bending foward. I sure do hope the shots work and you can get into pt and have them "crank on you" as my dh put it.. good luck.

Thank you everyone! I had the shot, and it was no picnic. I was hurting from the shot for a good 4 hours after. But I am now feeling a lot better. Definitely not 100% yet, but at least it's a start. I have also started lower my doses of aleve and I am off the vicodin completely now.

Also in another news, I no longer have a kitchen. DH and my Dad ripped out the cabinets this weekend. I am hoping by next weekend I will have a kitchen again.

Here is how it looked before:

Well the kitchen is done, with the exception of some minor finish work. You can see in this picture we do not have toe kicks on the bottom of our cabinets because the cabinet manufacturer messed up and sent us oak toe kicks. We still have to get knobs, also we ripped up the baseboard around the walls so we have to finish that and the sink works but isn't secured because we are also waiting on parts from the manufacturer. But I am so glad that I can use it again and my house is back in order.

Thank you! My back is feeling much better. I was sore from this weekend. But I think it was just general soreness from working so much. I can't tell you how happy I am that the wedding is over (and that I am married :) ) and have time to do these projects. Especially the kitchen used to drive me crazy! I have not updated this in a while. So my back is getting better. I still in physical therapy and most days I am pain free. However today isn't one of them. I decided to paint our living room, which is a huge room. Jon was working all weekend so I did it all on my own. I painted the walls, all the trim, and the chandelier and finished the caulking on the baseboard trim (a project left over from over 2 years ago). I think everything on my body hurts today! I will get a photo of it tonight or tomorrow once I have put everything back on the walls.

Danielle9608
11-10-2008, 08:27 AM
Also forgot to mention. Jon and I were kicking around the idea of selling and moving into a single family house (we live in a townhouse). Since the market really tanked in MA it meant we could get something bigger for not much more then we are paying now. But when we ran the numbers - we have so little equity we would have to basically pay 10k to move, which we practically drain our savings. So for right now we are staying put and trying to make the house as nice as possible.

Danielle9608
11-16-2008, 06:14 PM
I finally got around to taking pictures of the redecorated living room/dining room. Here are the before pictures. The walls were white and orange, the chandelier was green. I also changed the rug, window treatments, the throw pillows and the wall art.

So this Thursday we have a Realtor coming to our house to give us an idea how much we could sell it for. Jon is so miserable dealing with the people on the board/neighbors. I really can't into details but it just took a turn for the worse. Also a assessment is coming down the road and we want to be out before that happens. I have been looking a recent sales all day. I feel so sick to my stomach thinking about what our house might be worth. Please pray for me the we can get at least 240K! And even at that we are still losing money!!

So sorry to hear this Danielle, but I totally feel your pain. Since Mack and I got married a year earlier than we planned, my house is on the market right now too. I have it listed for $94,900 - and that is my breakeven point. Sales in our area haven't been higher than $90K for a house the size of mine, so at that, I'm going to have to come up with at least $3K for closing as a minimum. I one couple interested in the house but they wanted it for $84K meaning I would have had to pay over $10K to make the sale. It didn't happen because I'm not going to give my house away.

Kfancii
11-18-2008, 02:35 PM
Oh...and one more thing. Don't be afraid to bring in a second realtor if the first one gives you a figure you can't live with. I had two appraisals done on my house before listing with my current agent. The first agent came through with her comps and wanted to list my house at $74,200 - well, it would have sold for that without any problem, other than I would still owe another $11K on a house that I didn't have anymore before the $10K in closing cost and sellers fees!

Danielle9608
11-18-2008, 02:58 PM
Thanks Kelly. I wish you luck with your house too! That is our main problem right now, covering all the Realtor costs. :( We are willing to loose a little bit of money, just to get out of there and into a single family house - but no more the 3,000. Because we still have to put down a deposit on a new house plus closing costs.

PS. On the bright note. I just found out I got a $3600 raise, so it helped my mood a lot. :)

Thanks for the well wishes! I have set my bottom line at losing $5K - because I know there is no way I'm going to get my asking price in today's market.

Wooo Hooo on the raise! That should help some too! I'm currently looking for a new job as our new Dean is not much of an events person and since my whole job revolves around events, I'm a little afraid that he is going to decide to cut me. Hopefully I can find something I like even better and make a little more money too! How's that for being optimistic?

Danielle9608
11-24-2008, 07:49 AM
So the Realtor came on Thursday. He told us that we probably would not be able to sell for more then 238K. Not the news I was hoping for, but at least its less the we owe. However, I think he could be wrong. All the comps he pulled were older listings (over 5 months) and the houses were not nearly as nice as ours, plus we have lower condo fees then most. Right now we are working on getting the house in tip top shape. I am so tired of painting and spakling and caulking right now. We are hoping to list it in Jan and we are going to start it at 245K. If we don't get any interest then we will lower it. I am not about to give me house away without trying to get more first.

Goin2thechapel
11-24-2008, 08:06 AM
I totally agree...Start high and go from there cause once the price is listed you can't go up...

Danielle9608
12-22-2008, 11:47 AM
I haven't updated this for a while. After painting almost every room in the house, and a lot of stress and a few arguments, Jon and I decided now isn't the time to sell the house. A pretty comparable house just sold down the street from us for 40K less then we need to get for ours.

bichonlvr
12-22-2008, 12:08 PM
Stinks you have to wait...but better to wait and get more money then try to sell it and realize it just won't work! Now you can enjoy an updated house :) Plus you really needed something to fill the no-planning of a wedding anymore time :)

I came into this post pretty late after you made the post about the remodel in your kitchen and I have to say that it turned out soooo beautiful! I love the colors and how everything just flows together.

Hey Danielle how's your back? What did the doctor say? Hope everything's ok.

They said to wait a week and if it's still hurting to call back. It hurts on and off so I think maybe I just pulled something. Thank you for asking, you are too sweet!

I haven't updated this in a while. Let's see what is new....
My sister is getting married in October and I am her Matron of Honor. I am currently working on her Save the dates. I will ask her if its okay once they are done if I can post them here. They are coming out awesome.

Also we have another home improvement project in the works. Since selling our house without loosing a lots of money is near impossible right now, we have to make do with what we have. So we are going to finish our basement and it should give us another 500 sq of living space. I just got my bonus today and it was a little over $2,000 and after tax return we should about cover most of it without digging into savings.

Lastly I am officially off the pill. I had a preconception appointment and my doctor said she wants us to wait at least two cycles before starting to try. So hopefully come April we will start. The bad part is using another BC method for the next 2 months.

So everything is all set for the basement remodel. We are going to start framing on 2/28. Between now and then we have the fun fun task on cleaning everything out from the basement. I can't wait to get started because I am really looking froward to having the added space!

Remodeling the house and decorating is one of the most exciting things for me, but my enthusiasm is gone when I have to put all the stuff back. :) Taking them out is much much easier :D

LOL I am the same way. I usually have full steam until the project is almost done and those finishing touches take me forever! Right now I am having fun picking out the flooring and lighting options. The "looking" part is always fun for me :)

This weekend we started framing out the basement, it doesn't look like much yet but you can sort of get the idea of how it going to look. I am really pleased the amount that got done in just one Saturday.

Here is what it looked like the night before we started the framing. It was really dusty because I had just swept, it also doesn't help I had my camera on the wrong setting.

we made a little more progress on the basement. We bought all the dry wall and lugged that into the basement. Which was no easy task! And we have most of the ceiling done. Excuse the cr@ppy photos. I didn't want to take the nice camera down there.

Looks great! I bet you are totally ready to be out of a construction zone!!

Danielle9608

Thanks! The construction is really not all that bad cause its down in the basement. I mean some things have been displaced but as of right now we don't really use our second bedroom so everything is stuffed in there. I hope by this weekend all the dry walling will be done and then we can get to mudding and tapping. Once that is doneeverything is pretty easy from there :)
