I seriously doubt we will actually run out of gas, but people freaking out about it may be a problem. I think it is sort of like when there is a snow storm warning; everyone rushes out to hit the grocery stores and then the stores run out of bread and milk and such.
The prices of gas going up more and more also put a damper on things; some of the companies can't afford to or don't want to buy more to sell at these prices for fear they will not sell it all.
DH went to get gas today and said he had to go to 3 different stations to find one that had gas. He also said it was $4.19 per gallon for regular! My car uses premium, so I am glad I don't need gas right now and don't have to drive a lot.
Sheesh!
How are things in your area?

hmmmm... things are going great in my home town. Gas is about $3.67 a gallon for regular right now. FH filled his tank this morning and only put 69 bucks to fill his truck, it usually takes about 90 bucks.
Well, things are not going good in Houston for obvious reasons. I think that it is starting to even back out though.

It's crazy here, since we practically DID run out of gas because of people panicking and stocking up. On Friday, the newspaper was reporting that 85-90% of stations were out of gas. The few places that did have some had lines blocking the streets, with waits of up to five hours.
I've been walking everywhere this weekend, because my car is really low on gas and I want to make sure I can make it to work tomorrow without having to wait in some line for gas.
It even made CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/09/19/nashville.gas/index.html

Shortly after Ike, gas rose to inbetween $4.29-$4.39. Within days, it came back down to $4.03, then a day after that it fell to $3.69 which is where we are currently sitting.

Pfffth i wish it went down in price in the UK. Ours works out to roughly $13 a Gallon :bbeek::bbeek: But there's no shortages or panic buying yet.
I agree with Weblady about the snow though. Here in the UK it can snow for ONE DAY and everyone runs to the shops buys all the bread and tins of baked beans. The Trains come to a stand still because of the "Wrong Type Of Snow". And all hell breaks loose.
The next day it's melted.

This is the first I have heard of this madness.
Luckily I haven't noticed anything different here. I think gas is around $3.49.

Funny, we don't have anyone running to the stores or the pumps when they have predicted a storm.
Our gas prices are always higher than yours. We'll only see line ups at the pumps when word has leaked that the price is going up the next day. All it takes is for someone in the oil industry to sneeze and the prices go up!

Well i wish someone in the oil industry will either cough or fart and put the prices down in the UK.

Gas prices in New England are going down, we have some stations where regular is about 3.49 a gallon. It was up as high as 4.15 this summer though.

Out here in Saint Paul, during and after Ike the prices rose again quite considerably -- as much as 10%, ie, about 40 cents.
But now things seem to be stabilizing, gas is even dropping. Yesterday it was at $3.59 a gallon. Dunno about today, haven't been out yet.
Just after Labor Day but before Ike gas was actually down to $3.43 a gallon! I would like to see it under $3.50 again -- and stay there.

Yeah, before Ike, I could get gas for around $3.25, and that was premium! Now, the few stations that have gas around here are charging anywhere from $3.99 to $4.50 for regular. They say the shortage should be mostly over by the end of the week, so I'm hoping prices will drop then too.

I find this so interesting! I live right outside of New Orleans. Before and after a hurricane, there is a huge rush at the gas stations and if you don't get there quickly enough, you won't be able to tank up and get out of Dodge in time for the hurricane. And when you come back - you want to tank up before getting to the suburbs, because the gas stations might not be stocked yet or no electricty to run it. From what I understand (and from hearing about it with relatives in Texas), the refineries didn't take the hit that they expected from Ike, thank heavens. So, hopefully people will stop freaking out about it. We're doing fine here, no gas shortages.. now, if you had asked me about that right before Gustav - whew, I was lucky to find a station and then, they only had premium to sell!

Well I wasnt going to but I've been driving around on "E" on my tank for the past few days. I went to 10 different gas stations and ALL OUT OF GAS! All they had were diesel fuel.
I finally got lucky and followed a gas tanker into a gas station and waited for him to unload the fuel.
My car shut off just as I was coasting into the pump lol I got sooo lucky.
Everyone is going crazy here in Georgia! Plus I paid $4.59 per gallon on premium gas!
So how is it effecting you?

Wow. That's crazy. I think we get so spoiled, forgetting sometimes how easy we have it, until something goes wrong and then the modern conveniences we take for granted aren't at our fingertips anymore.
I've seen on the news all the people waiting in line for gas, but sort of just put it out of my head until I read this! Glad you were able to find gas. Hope everyone else does too!

I had to put regular in my car on Monday because I couldn't find anywhere with mid-grade or premium. :(

I didn't realize there was a problem with getting gas? I knew it was short a few weeks ago with the scare from the hurricanes and then they said the price of oil went up to $100something dollars a barrel but I didn't realize it was already affecting the pumps! I use regular in my vehicle all the time, no way am I gonna pay $5.00 a gal for gas...its bad enough at $3.71 for regular!
I guess I'll get some on the way home tonight b/c I'm on less than 3/4 of a tank hopefully the stations won't be out before I get back out to my area of town...the gas is a few cent cheaper there.

DH tried to fill up again today and several places near us are out of or low on gas. He said he paid right at $4 for regular at the place where he finally found gas. He also said the place only had one pump open.

OK I knew this was bad in some areas, but I didn't realize how bad ... last night DH and I were out for his Dad's wedding, we passed several gas stations that were out of gas and the ones that did have gas seemed to only have regular (and/or diesel) and had huge lines of people waiting; some even had police directing traffic in and out :bbeek: We even saw a couple of people pushing their cars into the gas station!

I drove by gas stations today that had long lines of cars waiting. They were actually parked on the side of the road, waiting for gas. I am so sick of this. I really don't want to wait hours for gas, and I don't want to take MARTA either. When is this **** going to end? It's $3.43/gallon in Hurst, Texas (near Fort Worth), where my grandma lives. Dallas/Fort Worth and surrounding cities have gas stations everywhere, on almost every major street corner. Why doesn't Atlanta; it's a huge city! It's just ridiculous that there aren't a lot of gas stations here. We are getting ripped off, paying around $4.30/gallon and even more at other gas stations. I'm just so frustrated and pissed! :snide:

I have to say...Gas in California is always high in price, we are used to it!
That is what kills me about federal taxes and everything they don't take into account where you live and the cost of living!!! GRRRR

The best times to go get gas is 2-3pm or 2-3am!
I've been lucking out going to lunch around 3pm and getting premium grade gas. My husband's been going out at 2am with no lines.

I would just like to say that gas in Saint Paul is now 2.58, on average, and I'm sure there are places around town where it's cheaper. Yep. Fiance just told me he stopped at a place today where it was 2.49!!!!
Gas has been falling steadily, every day, for about 3 weeks. Typically just by a few cents, but sometimes as much as 10 cents overnight.
At this rate it'll be under $2 by Christmas!!!

We've seen a decline in price here in Vegas as well. A few weeks ago I was excited it had gone down to 3.59, and today I saw it was 3.13! I just hope it keeps going down.

Woohoo!! In the UK ASDA and Shell have dropped the price to 99.9p a Litre. That's £4.50 ish a Gallon. ($9 a Gallon) Still nowhere near as cheap as the US. But We are happy bunnies right now. :D
When We were driving around Wales on Honeymoon. We saw a load of Petrol forecourts shut that now sell second hand cars. The prices on the pumps were 65p a Litre. Oh the good old days LOL.

The shortage seems to have subsided some; although many places still only have regular. But the prices are still around $4 a gallon.

Here in Nashville, the shortage seems to be over and prices have been falling. The cheapest I've seen so far is $2.89 for regular. I can't wait till premium gets under $3!

We never did have a shortage here in Central Florida, at least not my area. We saw gas yesterday for 2.79 Which is pretty good in my book :) At least compared to the last few months. I'm not sure we will ever see it under $2, though it would be very nice. hehe I would like if it went back down to 98 cents a gallon ;)

Here's a sad fact....
Every time fuel prices raise a nickel, on average 5,000 truckers end up jobless. These are mostly ma and pa truckers who can't compete with the big trucking companies that can buy fuel in bulk at a better rate.
That's why everything you buy now days is more. We pay more for fuel, charge more to deliver, they charge you more to buy. Just a vicious cycle.
