So I go on the USPS site tonight to check out postage calculators. We decided to go with the 6x6 pocket fold invitations, and I knew that they might be a little heavier than regular mail, so I wanted to check it out. What did I find? .79 cents to mail EACH ONE! :bbeek: What the deuce??? There's a .20 cent extra charge (bringing the price to .79 each) because it's square. Really? I'm gonna have to run down the the post office and find out if I can bulk mail these things or something. Jeez...postage is gonna whip us like the family pig.

Mine cost me about that much, too, and $2.00 each to mail internationally! I think mailing those stupid things cost more than the invites (DIY) did!

Yeah for some reason just being square adds to the cost. Something about their mail sorter ...
I am not looking to forward to the postage. I'm hoping to send mine as tri-fold postcards and maybe get away with $.26.

Mine went up because it was "Fatter" :bbeek: Even though the envelope was a standard size.
I had a small Rose on the front and it bulked the envelope out a bit. Because it wouldn't quiet go through a "slot" they have behind the counter it cost me another 40p to Mail it. :snide:
Well, you just increased my budget ~ and I already had nearly $100 just for the initial invites and RSVP postage ~ not including the separate amount budgeted for Thank Yous!
Thanks to your advice, I went to USPS and checked.. the invite I am *currently* in luv with is a 7.00 X 5.00 - and that site states even if it only weighs 1 ounce (it'll be more) - it's gonna be at least .59 just to mail, probably more... at least the RSVP postage will still be cheap!
Thank you for the heads-up!!

I work at a contract post office (for a university), so it's not directly USPS, but a trifold postcard would be treated as a regular letter. Postcards are only one thickness. The only exceptions I know to this are the double postcards (reply cards) in which only one side may contain a message to the recipient.
You may want to check with your regular PO, but I don't think you will get a postcard rate for those. :(

You're exactly right. My department is in charge of our university mailroom and we've had this discussion with the post office.

Yep; there are standard sizes, thicknesses and weights for stuff and beyond that will cost more. I'd still go by the local Post Office for a real estimate.

One of the reasons we're going with seal-n-sends is postage costs. With save the dates, invites, response postcards, and thank you notes, our postage costs are well over $100 for regular size mailings. About 75 addresses if I remember right.

Ugh I hear ya on the postage. I'm doing the pocket type invites and it seems that the most common pockets are square, but I don't want to spend more on postage! Even doing regular sized invites, its too havy so I'm still going to spend .59 per invite. Although, I'm using postcards for my RSVP. At least those will be under .30 or something like that!

If you're interested in what you're invites might cost to mail, you could check this site out.

Yea thats crazy. Maybe take one to the post office like you said to send bulk mail. It's possible there's a discount to mail many all at once.

Definitely take your invite to the P.O. and ask... I have about a 6x8 and although the website led me to believe they would be more, when I went in and showed it to them was told it would be the standard .42 - just keep your enclosures slim to keep it underweight. (If possible, opt for postcard-style reply cards instead of envelopes, you save about half the postage there.)
