I've had my mare for 15 years. The only reason I've ever had to have the vet out for her was to get her teeth floated once. Other than that she's been very healthy.

Last Friday (when my mom and I were at the roundup http://board.marlincrawler.com/Smileys/marlin/doh.gif ) she developed colic. My stepdad, who isn't a horse person, noticed that she was acting funny and called my uncle (who is a horse person), who in turn called the vet. My family came through for me and pulled her through the night, and we thought she recovered.

Well today, 5 days later, she's got colic again. My mom has called the vet out yet again, but I'm concerned. WHY would she colic twice?http://board.marlincrawler.com/Smileys/marlin/huh.gif

We had her in the pasture where she was eating off the ground, and on Saturday my stepdad built a corral for her on the cement so that she wouldn't be eating off the dirt. Now, even though she's been using a feeder and hasn't had access to any excess of food or dirt, she's goin down again.

She is 21 years old, and maintains a very healthy weight.

Mom had the vet out again tonight and realized that the medecine that the vet was giving her was too strong for her damaged insides, and that contributed to her going down again tonight. Also, we're putting her on a strict diet for the next few weeks.

Mom says if she colics again we're going to have to let her go http://board.marlincrawler.com/Smileys/marlin/rivers.gif http://board.marlincrawler.com/Smileys/marlin/rivers.gif

Please keep her in your prayers. Some people will say it's silly, asking for prayers for a horse. But she's been my baby since I was 8 years old. She and I have a lot of history together, and I know that there's going to be a time when I have to let her go, but she's still not 'old' for a horse.

Thanks for those of you who understand.

I'm so sorry! I know how stressful it can be when your horse colics, my sister's quarter horse has a tendency to do it. Have you guys tried putting corn oil in her feed? We have to do that everyday for Mysti. She's colicked about 6 times since we got her 5 years ago. She might have an ulcer, which contributes to Mysti's colicking so often. I will have you guys in my prayers, I know how hard it is to loose a horse.

P.S. I read a Pony Pals book once where some kid was giving one of the ponies too many apples and it colicked. But I doubt that's the problem.

Mom's tryin to get her to pass whatever's stuck inside... so that she can give her a handful of food. I haven't tried corn oil cuz we feed hay, not grain. You're the second to mention an ulcer. I'll mention that to mom and see if we can find anything. Unfortunately we can't afford to have it removed if that's the case... :( So we'll see where we go from here.

Hope you guys can get her well again!

How long do horses usually live anyway?

I hope she gets well!! I don't think it's silly to ask for prayers about it. Animals are often almost like or are like members of the family. :)

Well, a healthy horse can live well into its 30's. My mom's horse was 35 when he passed. My horse has had no previous illnesses, and seems pretty healthy. I'm hoping that this is a last time occurrence and we have a few more years to go. If she passes, I'd rather it be when I'm there. :irked:

I'm sorry to hear that your horse isn't feeling well... our Dog is like a member of the family... so i know how sad it can be to watch them get sick....

I'll keep you and your family in my prayers...and keep us updated...

Here's praying for the best!...

I don't think it's silly to ask for prayers for your pet. Lots of people like their pets better than some of their family. I sure hope she feels better. Hang in there.

I looked up a website that have information/ideas for you guys to try on her if she does have an ulcer. I would definitely clear it with the vet first though.

Also, have you guys made sure that her hay isn't moldy? I know it's been raining a lot around here and we have to keep a close eye on that.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. They discovered it was indeed sand colic. She had 70% sand in her poop! So we're taking extra special care with her diet and where she eats from - and she's not allowed in the pasture for awhile yet. So she's on our cement driveway for now.

I went out and visited her this weekend and she looks great! She may have lost about 50 lbs (if that), but she still looks fantastic. She has always been overweight and she seems to be at a perfect weight right now :)

70% sand? That sounds extremely uncomfortable. How does that happen? Glad that she's getting better.

Horses are grazers. My horse is a fat a** so she's always grazing. Our pasture is mostly dirt, due to the horses, goats and llamas keeping it trimmed down so well. Apparently she was picking up more dirt than food :irked:
