Just want to know if anyone in here has been to Dubai, in the UAE? I heard its really cool and everything is so high tech and stuff. I also heard bad stuff like too much traffic and too much people. I'm planning on taking a vacation in the near future, I just need to figure out where I want to go!

Hmmm, I don't know, I'd be inclined to avoid that whole area of the world for at least the time being, lol.

I hear New Zealand is nice though!

I saw it on the Today show a while back (last year maybe) and it looks really nice! That would be one place I would like to visit, but not anytime soon. :(

I don't know much about it. I have heard it is VERY expensive. But from what I have seen I want to go so bad.

The best man in our wedding is from here in Ontario but when he was in about grade 8 he moved to Dubai with his parents. He lived there until he came back for college (his parents are still there). It's really expensive there to do just about everything.

The palm islands are beautiful and he said they're a ton of fun. Really neat night clubs and the area he lived in was almost all americans that had gone over there to work. I personally am too afraid to go lol.

Dubai is perfectly safe. It is a melting pot of different cultures and I have many friends who go there for family vacations every year. Sure they have different customs and it's a completely different part of the world, but if you are comfortable with adventuring outside your comfort zone you would be fine. If you're into golfing, shopping, resorts, clubs, and ethnic food it's your ideal destination, but I haven't heard much about many other activities to do. I have heard comments from friends who don't care for Dubai about how disgusting and over the top the luxury and commercialism is. And then other friends love it and spend thousands shopping for two weeks straight because their daddy's are in the oil business. Sooo I think that it really depends on your personality whether you would like it or not.

I was in Dubai about 12 years ago - but only the airport. (It was a layover on the way to Nepal) LOL. It was seriously the most beautiful airport I have ever seen though!

I am fascinated by different cultures, and I would love to visit the middle east at some point, but I think since so many aspects of the culture are sensitive I would want to make sure I had someone with me who was very familiar with the area and the customs.

Dubai is safe. My brother went there to meet his fiance. (She is a sister of the cousin's wife, who played cupid to get them together). He spent a week there and didn't have any problems.

There are certain things you might want to know, like don't cross your legs where the soles of your shoe face someone (they consider that to be an insult)... You can't take pictures of the mosque (other than one inparticular that is supposed to be beautiful and they allow pics of that).

My brother went on camel rides and a boat ride. There's also supposed to be a ski resort inside of the building. He knew someone who got them into that huge, 4,000 dollar a night hotel (forget what it's called) and the pictures of the place are incredible.

Sad thing is that my brother also met some of his fiance's friends who work in the hospital... they live in shacks in comparison to the giltz and glamor of the place. I'm talking about RNs making only 800 a month.

My brother was glad that he went, but he wouldn't want to live there.

Thanks for the info guyz, it such a glammed up place that I wouldn't feel it a "homely" place to live. When i think about it all that comes to mind is vacation, not a permanent residence, for anyone really. But it looks sooooo cool!
