Just searched your local craigslist and came up with a big list you can look into.

Maybe there is someone local to you in the OneWed vendor directory (http://www.onewed.com/vendors.php?Cat=126&Loc=MA&VendorSearch=) :grinhappy:
You could check at local venues and bridal shops to see if they have any they can refer; often times vendors will network with venues and bridal shops.

a craiglist search is a great idea. and go beyond boston and look in the worcester area as they are usually a bit cheaper. Look under gigs- creative and events
also you can post this on yahoo answers under the wedding section too. tehre are a lot of MA brides on there.

I have heard that some people also have had good luck by contacting their local colleges and universities, the ones that have like a journalist program or some other program where there are student photographers, and put up a notice (or send an email) saying that they want to hire a student photographer for their wedding.
Students cost less because they're just starting out. But if you go with somebody new to the wedding picture business, make SURE that they show you their portfolio (preferably of other weddings, or at least of other people!) AND that they have more than one reference.
I found my photographer from Craigslist and he's amazing, but after years of photography he's only been doing weddings for the last few years, so he charged us less for his services. I got two references from previous wedding couples and they couldn't say enough good things about the guy -- and his portfolio was really stunning -- so we set up a meeting at our local coffee shop to meet with him one on one.
The guy hit it off really well with both of us so we hired him right there on the spot.
It might seem that we did a lot of extra work but having great pictures of our wedding is *vitally* important to the two of us, the biggest priority of our wedding aside from actually getting married, and we wanted to do everything we could, on our limited budget, to ensure that we won't be disappointed.
If you're curious about who we hired, his website is www.picsbydan.com

Craigslist isn't a bad option if you're looking for someone reasonably priced. I also think the university student option isn't a bad idea. Just realize that art students and beginners in the industry are cheaper for a reason - they lack the experience of a seasoned professional. If the pictures are really an important thing for you, take the time to visit with several different photographers, find someone whos style you like, and see what their prices are. Weddings are usually low light tricky situations, so ask any student you may hire if they have any experience with that. There aren't do-overs on wedding photos. If you go into your search with those things in mind, you'll be ok.
Warnings aside, if your wedding is in May of 2009, you're still doing pretty good on time, and should have plenty of time to interview photographers.

thanks so much to everyone who replied to me. I'm in my 50;s and this is my first marriage. @!!! i have little idea what i'm doing, but I'm doing it all on my own, with my fiancee. no one else to help us. so any advice from anyone on everything is helpful to us. we're on a very tight budget with 3 kids from his former marriage (he's a widower) and everything is complicated and hard.
thanks again.
keep writing with your ideas. i appreciate it all !!!
