Thursday I got my certified copy of our marriage license, so Friday I left work early to start taking care of changing my name.
First I went to the DMV. This has to be the most frustrating experience ever! When I left work, the online thing said the average wait time was 20 minutes. Well, 20 minutes after I get there I call Ryan and ask him to check the queue time and it's now 55 minutes, ugh. It's just horribly frustrating because you watch these people behind the counter call a number and when no one comes up, turn off their sign and leave the counter. They spend more time talking to each other than helping customers. There was a point in time for 5 minutes straight where not a single person was being assisted! I'm not making this up either. So after I get to the counter, I have to wait to get my photo taken. 15 minutes later an employee walks over to the camera calls Scott, takes his picture and then turns around and gabs with another employee. I see that he's about to leave the camera without calling me up there, so I politely ask to have my picture taken so I can get out of there because I still have to make it to the social security office and they close in an hour. (At this point I'm pretty shocked at my own restraint for not voicing my true opinion of their lazy arses, I figured it wouldn't do any good.) Oh and now my picture looks like crud, because I'm well I'm annoyed and have someplace I need to get to and am not sure how long that line is going to be either. With all frustration I forgot to re-register to vote while I was there. But at least that form is simple and I don't have to be there in person to do it.
Lucking the social security office I chose to go to was not crowded at all. When I was looking online for name change information some people said you have to go the SS office first, the woman behind the counter asked for my new ID. She said it was a good thing I went to do that first because they sometimes are not allowed to process the name change without a new ID. (I wasn't really sure what she meant by "sometimes" but I didn't bother to ask.)
Today I went to my bank, it was a good thing that this was a really slow process, because otherwise I probably would have totally forgotten to order new checks.
So now I'm in the process of changing over credit cards, and AAA membership and I can't forget my hotel points and frequent flyer memberships (my primary one will have to wait until I've finshed the travel I've completed under my old name, otherwise that's just going to be a pain and I might not earn the miles I'm supposed to).
