So, over the weekend, we were visiting my parent's in Michigan. We were pulling out of the driveway, turned the a/c on and was greeted by the smell of dead carcas. I thought at first something had died in the woods, but as we drove down the road, outside smelled much better than my brand new car.

We turned around and went back to the house where FH and my dad ripped apart the a/c and dash to find a mouse on my air conditioning filter...dead. They proceeded to put everything back, turned the air on, and it still smelled.

Took the dash apart again, felt around and found not one but two more dead mice which decided to take the insulation in my a/c and make themselves a nice little nest of it! I was super pissed and ready to throw up from the rank smell. We drove home with air fresheners and febreeze with the windows open, which let me tell you, 6 hours with the smell of dead mice, lysol, febreeze, and too much car fresheners, made me sick.

The next morning, I still smelled it. Drove to work sporting my new purfume of febreeze and mountain air car fresheners, came home and FH pulled apart the dash one last time to find the mother mouse..baking on the engine. WTF - how in the hell did this happen?! And um...hello?? GROSS!!!!!

That all being said...I can't get the darned smell out of my car..any tips? I've tried Febreeze, Lysol, car air fresheners, windows open, windows closed, soap...ugh..I quit. HELP!!!

OMG! I am surprised this happened in a car! Did you leave it parked for a few days before this?

As for getting the smell out; I am not sure what to tell you that you haven't already tried, good luck!

I too can't believe this happened in a new car! Exactly how new are we talking here? Like could it be dealership related:winktongue:

As to getting rid of the smell maybe try calling around to some of the dealerships or a cleaning company and see if they have any suggestions.

sorry your going through this:(

Well, what is ironic, is my parents cars were parked longer than mine as I drove my car every day. So how/when they got in there, nobody knows! I bough the car in December, so not entirely that new, but my new car smell is gone :bbcry:

I guess I could understand in the winter when they are looking for a place to burrow, but in the middle of summer?! I was 80 degrees plus everyday!

A Friend of mine had a live Mouse residing in Her Cars Roof Lining.
You would be sitting there and all of a sudden Four Little Feet would walk over Your head. Pressing down on the Lining.

Was funny to watch because the Mouse never really ran for it. Would just wander along.

Her Car was the same as Mine. An Old 1960's British Police Car. And in the Lining there's a Zip so the Police could get to the Wiring on the Police Sign that sat on the Roof.

We tried opening the zip hoping "Micky" would fall out and Bugger Off. In the end i think someone got brave and just Smacked the Roof when the Feet pressed on the Lining and got the corpse out. :bbeek:

Ew gross! I'm sorry this happened to you! A cat once got into my moms car and peed..and you know, cat pee smell doesnt just leave. She put a couple of bags of powder laundry detergent in her car...and a couple of days later...it seemed to work! Maybe this will help you out? Just a suggestion.

You know, that might just do the trick! I'm so sick of all the other scents in my car, I'd much rather smell fresh laundry!!!!

When we found rat paw prints under the hood of my car, my mechanic offered to spray it with WD-40. He said it works by irritating their paws, so they don't want to stay where the stuff is sprayed. Talk to your mechanic about it.

There was a very dead mouse in the garage of a house I was moving into years ago...I don't remember what we did to get rid of the smell though!

It sounds dangerous!

If you read my journal, you might have read that we saw a family of mice, warming themselves, the the home we are going to buy. The offer was conditional upon the owners getting a year long exterminator contract!

Even still, the first thing we are going to do when we get the key is to change the locks and then set down traps - just in case! LOL I told DH - I am not going down the basement until I am SURE that they are gone *bawk bawk bawk*

Living on the ranch, we see this a lot. How new is your car? New to you, or really brand new?? I'm sorry bout the smell, that sucks!! I would say leave the windows down for a few days... and be sure to replace your cabin air filter. What kind of car is it? I can tell you how complicated it can be to replace...

I was gonna write and say "Get a cat", but then I looked up and saw that it was you posting. LOL
Yes, get traps. Lots of them.

Yuck! My parents had that problem. They found a nest or something up inside the car. I'm not sure if there's any mice left in that mouse family, but I've heard that if you park the car in the same place, they'll be able to find it again, so you'll maybe wanna park the car in another place for a little while. That's what my parents ended up doing.

Baking Soda! I would rip the tops all the way off a few baking soda boxes and leave them in there with the windows up. It absorbs odors and was the only thing that got the smell of death out of my car when I was stupidly convinced to driving my own car to Mexico. For days after we got home it still smelt HORRIBLE and I had no idea why! Like rotten eggs or something. *Shudders at the memory* Second night I tried made the biggest difference and then it was completely gone in 3 or 4 days! I wouldn't put any air fresheners with it, just that. Good luck hun! :purplex:

I dunno if ya'll have seen the pimp my ride show with the really really really really really beat down car with rusted holes all over, the lil yellow foam stickin out, but any wayz under each yellow foam xhibit lifted up he found a mice or 2, the car became a maze for 'em they went through the holes and cracks of the car, they were living the luxuroius life in there, they probably lived the luxurious life in your car too before you turned on the engine :bbeek:...lol . The last thing I could think of to get the smell out would be to maybe try the color safe bleaches, clorox is a good disinfectant.
