View Full Version : We could use some extra prayers
Ladies, I would really be thankful if you could say some extra prayers this week for my co-workers little grandson. His name is Cooper and he has a blood clot in one of the veins in his liver. He is in Chicago having surgery right now to bypass the clot. It's a very scarey time for his family. It is supposed to be a 6 to 8 hour surgery. His Grandma, Jody, is a really good friend...as well as his Mom, Jamie. Thanks so much in advance for your thoughts and prayers. We're all very worried!!

Wow; how old is Cooper?
Definitely praying for him and his family!
Cooper will be 2 in November. He was born at 27 weeks. At first they thought his only problem was his esophogus wasn't connected to his tummy. He had surgery to correct that when he was just a few days old.
Then, after he was about a year, his platlett count was bad...and they couldn't figure out why. They kept having to take him to Sioux Falls (about a 3 or 4 hour drive) because he kept having trouble. His tummy was really swollen. Finally, somewhere along the way, they did a CT of his tummy...and it showed the blood clot. They have been waiting in Sioux Falls since the end of May for this surgery. For one reason or another, the Drs. kept putting it off. Finally, his Mom (and family) decided to try something else.
She researched and found that his Dr. in Chicago have done a lot of these surgeries (his Dr in Sioux Falls had too...but the hospital had never taken care of one.) so they decided to take him there. They have been there 3 weeks...and are having the surgery today.
Thanks everyone for your prayers. He's such a sweetie pie. Even with everything going on...he has the biggest smile...all the time!! Thanks again!!

prayers for him and the family!
keep us posted with the results
Well, ladies (and gents) we just got an update from his Mommy. His surgery has been postponed until at least tomorrow. The surgeons had done a transplant on another little person yesterday and that little person isn't doing so well. So, they took them back to surgery in Cooper's spot. Also, she said the surgeons looked really tired because of the long surgery yesterday and then they were up all night with them. How sad!
Anyway, Cooper has been admitted to the hospital to try to address his ever growing tummy. Hopefully they can get some fluid off...then tomorrow the surgery team will have gotten some rest and things can go ahead. I'll ask that you continue to pray for strength for all of us, but most especially Cooper's family and medical team. Thanks so much.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I hope to hear good news soon.
Thank you all for all the prayers. Jamie updated again and said that surgery really isn't looking good for tomorrow either. It seems it's hard to get scheduled for a 6 - 8 hour surgery. We're disappointed...but know that God has His time for all things. We're trying to be patient.

Oh this is so sound - I always wonder why certain things happen to certain people but I know God has a plan for us all but that doesn't make it any easier at the time, especially with such a small child.
Our prayers are going his way!
Please keep us updated!
I haven't heard anything today. I tried calling his Grandma a couple of times today...but got no answer. I know that quite often they don't let you have your cell phones on in the hospital...so wasn't surprised. I'll let you know when I hear something. Thank you so very much for all your prayers.
The latest news on little Cooper is that he is scheduled for surgery on Monday at 8:30. The Grandparents came home until after his surgery. It was getting too expensive (almost $200.00 per night) for them to stay there, just to wait without a new date for surgery (which they didn't come up with until they got home!) His Mommy posted that today he is doing quite a bit better. He is in the hospital and they are pulling some fluid off of him...so he feels tons better. He is such a flirt..he even has a little girlfriend in the playroom!!:D

My thoughts and prayers are with the little one. Please let us know how everything turns out.
I'm sorry I've been MIA for a few days. I was at our State Conference...and no computer.
Cooper had his surgery on Monday and is now in the intensive care unit. They did do the Rex Shunt...and now are just needing time for healing. He is on a vent..and has a TON of wires and tubes. He seems to be doing OK and the Drs seem to be pleased. He is running fevers, so they are concerned about infection...and have tested everything. Their other concern is that the shunt does not clot off...so they have him on blood thinners.
Thank you so much for all your prayers and thoughts. We do appreciate them. Thanks so much and keep them coming.

I've got my prayers and best wishes for the little one.
I thought I would update all you sweet people. Cooper has been doing OK. Some of his labs have been a little off, but they are working hard to get them back on track. He has had some antibiotics...they seem to be working. They gave him a blood tranfusion and that seemed to help quite a bit.
He has been very sedated, because like any little person, if he's awake, then he wants to pull at all his wires and tubes. They have been trying to do some weaning of some of the different machines and medicines for sedation. The really good thing is that by now the pain from the surgery should be mostly healed.
Now, today, they tried to take him off the ventilator...but it didn't work so well. He started to struggle..and ended up having to go back on. Hopefully they can find a fix for this too...and he'll come off soon. His Mommy is even promising to watch 24 hrs straight of Mickey Mouse Play House, if they can just hold him. lol
Anyway, I thought you would want to know that he's doing pretty well. The shunt that they put in to bypass his clot in the liver seems to be working very well....so that is very good news. It all seems quite complicated...and I work in the medical profession. Luckily, so does his Mommy and Grandma.
Thank you all for your prayers...we really appreciate them. Keep them coming.

Will do.
To be honest ... I was rather scared to check this thread again. I didn't want to read anything sad. I am so glad to hear that he's doing better and giving them all heck (pulling wires out and such) Ata boy Cooper .... you keep up the healing :)
I wanted to let all you wonderful people know that Cooper is doing GREAT!! He is hopefully going to get out of the hospital by the end of the week. Then they will probably stay in Chicago another few days...and then get to COME HOME!!! Thank you so much for all of your prayers. They have definately worked.
His blood work is getting better, so his shunt is working. Praise God!!
