We're getting married in August so as great as a tropical all-inclusive trip to the tropics sounds, I don't want to be caught there during Hurricane season. We have the time to go during August since it's before the school year so I'd rather not wait until the semester when life is too busy. I'd love to go somewhere far far out like Bora Bora or Guam, but flight prices are quite prohibitive.

So we thought with the warm weather maybe we'd stay north (I live in PA) or head even further north. I've never been to New England and have also been wanting to go to Maine for years.

Anyone honeymoon or take other honeymoon-worthy trips to New England/Maine/northeast US? Places to go? Tips?

Thanks!

ETA: we're certainly also willing to go further north, into Canada if someone has a great suggestion for up there.

Well we live in New England (Boston) and have been to NH and Maine quite a bit and it's lovely, especially in August. There are great towns in NH where you can rent a cabin on a lake, and do fishing, shopping, grilling, swimming, jetski, boating, and just enjoying the good weather. (google Lake Winnipesauke, Mirror Lake, NH rentals and you'll get some good ideas). The White Mountains in NH is also very nice- we did a week there a few years back- they have great little towns for shopping, natural gorges for hiking, lots of woods and moutains and Attitash in the summer offers a water park, and there are good restaurants there too.

Maine is lovely too, you could do Bar Harbor and go to the beach, York Beach, Wells Beach, all those areas are nice. If you want more rustic you can go farther north (Troy, ME is near Canada and is very nice- lots of woods, hills, hiking, etc.)

Hope this helps- but NE is definitely beautiful this time of year!:D

For my first marriage we did Portsmouth NH for our honeymoon - and despite the fact that I picked the wrong husband, I still had a great time on that trip! There are some great shops and awesome restaurants - also you are so close to Maine for day trips. We took a boat out to the Isles of Shoals one day and that was amazing! It is a great place for picture taking.

We have recommended it to a few friends - actually had some people who were in town for our VT wedding head over there afterward for a few days, and everyone loves it!

I agree that New England can be a great place for a honeymoon! It is beautiful in the summer...

I took Hugh on a birthday weekend trip to Woodstock, VT. My friend has a motel there so we stayed at the motel and took day trips in and around the area. We loved it!

There are historical sites, tons of artistic studios and lots of antique markets to wander. Just our kind of place. We were there just at the end of August so there weren't that many leaves that were changing colour but I imagine it would be glorious in the fall if you wanted to wait a bit.

Tootsie just finished up a trip to the Laurentians (north of us in Montreal). The leaves would be changing there sooner if you are "into" that :) If you did want to head up this way, I'll give you some suggestions.
