Anyone in Washington DC or Old Town Alexandria?

I am trying to plan a surprise trip to DC for my husband during the Cherry Blossom Festival. Is anyone in the area who can offer some helpful advice?? I already have the info I need about the festival itself, but any other tips on things to see and do, local attractions, and especially tips on finding good lodging in the area would be wonderful! Thanks! Never thought of Fredericksburg! I know we will go to DC, a stop over to Maryland, and definitely staying in VA.
