My FH and I are going to do our own engagement pictures. I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with this? We have a tripod so that should make things easier, lol. I was thinking of going to this river area when the leaves turn color, that way they match our Fall 09 theme wedding we are having next year.

I don't believe I have heard of anyone else that did this.

I've never heard of it, but why the heck not? Save some money and have fun running back and forth to set the timer  Can't wait to see how they turn out!

We were thinking about this. We have a tripod and I have a cable release for mine so it seems mostly possible. Trouble is you can't see in the lens and you can't really capture shots in motion. A photographer can basically watch you through the viewfinder and capture those little moments that he/she sees. That would be the only downside to doing it yourself. But if you want mainly some nice, posed shots it could work perfectly fine.

Saltyveruca did her own, but they do it for a living I guess?
I think you should try it, what do you have to lose?

That sounds like a good idea. We thought of me & Fh , my sister & her FH going to whereever we'd like to have e-pics done at and do them for each other.

A friend took ours - she's kind of a non-professional photographer, but I wouldn't call her an amateur. Do you have a friend who could come simply to click the button for you? You could direct everything yourself, but maybe having someone to point and click would help...? Otherwise you will be running to the time every second, and may look unsettled in the pics. There is no issue doing them yourselves, it just might be easier with a third body...?
I think that if you were to set up the camera, aim it, get in front of it and settle and then have somebody else to just push the button, it might be easier? Then you can still do each others' single pics.
Anyways, sorry - just my thoughts. Either way, have fun!!!

This is pretty much what I was going to say. If you want some straightforward images of you guys posing together, give it a shot. But you're not going to get candid, relationship images like you would in an engagement session. And I'm sure it goes without saying that the quality will be a lot different, assuming you're not already a talented photographer.
Yes, my husband and I did our own engagement shoot. And yes, we're wedding photographers...so we have quite a bit of experience with engagements. It definitely wasn't as good as a full shoot would have been with a photographer, but we ended up with a few different scenes that we loved. We pulled it off with a tripod and a remote trigger. Also, beer.

I'm not doing our engagement pictures, but I do take my own family pictures with a tripod and a remote control. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, it's easier if you're a professional photographer, but like Saltyveruca said you don't get all the shots you would with a third person. I personally do it because I don't trust anyone else to get the pictures I want.
