It has been a while since i had to house train a puppy... my 8 month old lav mix puppy, Bubba does great with crate training... and he will whine and pitch a fit if he has to go potty and we don't take him out... however if we leave him alone long enough in the house or even in a room... he will potty inside even though he won't when we are there... will we never be able to give him free reign... or is it just to soon to house train? we really want to stop crating him eventually...

We're in the same boat . . . except we have a 1.5 year old Standard Poodle whom we rescued and whom, we were told, was completely potty trained. Um, yeah. We've had this dog for almost three weeks now and so far we have not had 24 hours without an accident.

The plan now is to take her back to square one and assume she needs to learn it all over again. We're going to literally take a long leash (6-10') or piece of rope, tie one end to me and one end to her, and never let her leave my side until I see her doing her thing.

At which point I will say in as happy a voice as I can muster, "Do you want to go OUT?" and take her out to do her thing. Once she learns about 'out' then I get to start scolding her for peeing inside and *then* we go out.

In theory she'll learn to signal me somehow when she needs to go out, instead of running off and sneaking down to the basement. :(

We just took our dog out on a really frequent basis. Every few hours, as soon as we got home, before we went to bed, etc. If you let them out the same door every time, they should learn to go sit by the door when they're ready.

I actually just got a puppy, an adorable little maltese, and I'm starting potty training with him. He's about 4 months old and cute as all get out. Anyway, he's never gone pooty outside! He seems very confused by it. The woman who bred him is a wonderful lady, but because she has such a tiny square of grass (literally about a 4 foot square) she has trained all of her dogs as well as the puppies she breeds to go on piddle pads.

I'm having a heck of a time getting him to try going outside. I'll know he has to go, even catch him just about to squat and take him right out, but he just won't go out there. The very second I bring him back inside and turn for half a second, he goes. I've tried putting the paper towels I used to soak up the urine (before using a cleaner on the spot) outside so maybe he would get the sent and the idea that was where the potty was, but no go so far. Any suggestions?

We are also in the middle of house training a puppy. 8 months is for sure old enough, ours is only almost 4 months. Crate training does wonders but you are already doing that. But maybe they need more free roam while you are home?

Maybe try to use Pee Pads?

I have a maltese, too, but she is about 2 1/2 now. She was such a pain to potty train! We tried everything, puppy pads, taking her out, etc. nothing seemed to work. Funny thing is, eventually, she decided to train herself and started whining and crying when she had to go! One day, she was just staring up at me and she wouldn't stop! I finally figured out what she wanted and took her out. She's still not 100% potty trained, though. She only wants to go outside when she wants to and most of the time, she'll go out there and just run around sniffing everything. I have to yell at her and then start counting to 3 to get her to come back in! She really waits until I get to "2" and then starts heading my way. Such a funny girl! lol
