I have steamed cleaned my carpets and have had plug-ins in my house. I am freaking out cause our house smells doggy. I wash everything, rugs, blankets, dog beds....but i just smell the dogs. They are bathed on a regular basis as well. When I steam clean it smells clean for like a day...

For those of you who have pets, what do you do to keep the smell away? I have tried Frebreeze but that is almost to perfumy for my sinuses...I don't want a stinky house!

Hmm... I'm not too sure. I have a dog and two cats, and at most, you can occasioanlly smell the litter box if it needs to be cleaned, or if they JUST went.

We don't really have a problem with doggy odor having Italian Greyhounds cause they just don't smell; one of the reasons we chose them ;)

I do use Febreze Allergen Reducer; it has a fresh scent, but not as strong as the other kind to me. and is ok to use around dogs too so I use it everywhere. But I only use it like once a week when I vacuum really.

Have you tried one of those carpet treatments where you leave the stuff there overnight then vacuum it up? I think it has baking soda or something in it that is suppose to pull up the smell.

Doing something like that regularly, and cleaning all the furniture and keeping the animals clean is really all I can think of. Maybe change the air filters in the house too; they may be carrying some of the odor as well.

When we first moved into our house it smelled like animals really bad. We tried steam cleaning all the carpets and that helped for a little while, but we eventually had to pull up all the carpet in the house. Now we have all laminate floors.

We use Simple Solution Carpet Cleaner with a small amount of Chlorox Color Safe Bleach to steam the carpets... i also recently switched shampoos for our dog... because the other one never made him smell clean for more than a few hours...we also spot clean with Nature's Miracle... i work at a pet store and i have pretty much tried everything because i have gobs and goobers of pets... we also have an odor absorber in each room (we live in an apartment)... lol, and all that pretty much takes care of it all!

We have three dogs so our apartment gets a doggy sometimes and what I found works good is the lysol freshmatic...that little thing that automatically gives a puff of air freshener every 10 min or so. The lysol neutra air scents are all pretty mild and when are are only doing one puff every 10 min it never gets very heavy.

I love Natures Miracle, that stuff is great.

Well, I washed the bathroom rugs (puppy accident) tonight and vaccumed the living room with carpet pet fresh, it smells like baby powder and is doing a number on my sinuses. I will look for other stuff this weekend when I am out running errands.

I noticed the same thing was happening to us. Have you changed you vacuum cleaner filter recently? I noticed after vacuuming the smell got worse. Our says do it every 6 months, but I think with a long hair dog its more like every 2 months.

Actually I just bought a new filter (we have the hoover wind tunnel), we have 2 goldens now, so there is always going to be hair that is for sure. O can't wait to get hard wood floors (Hopefully next spring) and that will definatley cut down on the "dander" in the carpets. We just have to wait till Dasie is completely potty trained, until then the steam cleaner is going to get a lot of use.
