Some of you may remember my dog Ditto had to go in for a very invasive and expensive procedure to try and kill her heart worms. This was the second time doing the procedure she had it done once before we adopted her - it didn't take. We spent many many visits to the vet and other specialists and thousands of dollars trying to cure it without going through this awful procedure again. But in the end we had to redo it. We just got the blood work back from this weekend (you have to wait 6 months after the procedure not to get a false positive) and she is now HEART WORM FREE!!! Wahooo! I'm going to get some frosty paws for her tonight and we are going to celebrate. 2 1/2 years trying to cure her!

YAY! Congrats!

So can you put her on a monthly heart worm preventative now?

Its ice cream for dogs. I think its beef flavored. They come in little cups like the ice cream you eat with the wooden spoons.

Yay for Ditto! (And you and Jon!) I know that must be a HUGE relief, both emotionally and financially to know she is in the clear now and only needs the regular monthly HW pills!

Congrats.
Now, have you considered how you're gonna prevent then from happening again? Not to sound like a commercial, but I've had Jasmin on Revolution, and had no parasite problems with her, and it's easy enough to apply, just once a month. Granted, she's a cat, but they do have Revolution for dogs, and it does these things for them.

Use in dogs 6 weeks of age or older against the following parasites: adult fleas, flea eggs, heartworm, ear mites, sarcoptic mites, and American dog tick.

Killing adult fleas and preventing flea eggs from hatching for one month, and indicated for prevention and control of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis).

Prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis.

Treatment and control of ear mite (Otodectes cynotis) infestations.

Treatment and control of sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei).

Control of American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) infestations.

She has been on prevention medication since we adopted her. She will always be. We adopted her heartworm positive. Believe me I know how inexpensive and easy it is to prevent heartworms. Especially considering we spent thousands out of pocket trying to cure her. Ditto was neglected and abused before she came to us. So I guess HW meds was not top on the list for the previous owners.

Ditto had her friend Kylie over (My best friend's dog) to celebrate her clean bill of health! Here they are just hanging out of the deck after a long walk.

Grrr. Some people seriously amaze me. They refuse to spend a few dollars a month to prevent so much pain and discomfort to the animal, not to mention thousands of dollars for procedures. I'm glad that you rescued her.
